A

When we’re small children, our mistakes are applauded. Our falling-down attempts to walk for the first time are cheered by our parents, giving us the courage to get up and try again. When we accidentally put our shirt on backwards, people smile and praise our independence. At this age, the world teaches us that failure is merely part of the journey to success.

But when we get to school, we quickly learn that mistakes are bad. Answers are right or wrong, true or false. The

risk-taking that used to be rewarded is now punished, and we either give up or learn to stick with safe answers.

Unfortunately, this black-or-white thinking does n’t encourage learning. Instead, it encourages a fear of failure and discourages inventiveness.

Teachers are starting to worry, and ―resiliency‖(心理弹性) is perhaps the latest buzzword(术语)in education. In June, the California Teacher’s Association published a n article called "Teaching Students to Bounce Back." It argued that children are under more stress than ever, but lacking in ―basic coping skills.‖ The article infers that this loss of coping skills could be because ―years of testing and test preparation h ave robbed them of critical thinking skills and the ability to self-reflect.‖

It’s no coincidence that anxiety among teenagers is on the rise. In her book, The Price of Privilege, Marilyn Levine tries to make sense of this trend: ―When parents place an ext remely high value on outstanding performance, children come to see anything less than perfection as failure. While most kids hang in there and try to meet those high expectations, more and more kids are quitting.‖ Students are afraid to try anything new, p revented by fears of appearing imperfect.

Allowing our children to make mistakes is the best way to fight this culture of perfectionism. We must remind them of what they knew as toddlers(初学走路的孩子): mistakes are a valuable part of the learning process. Creation and discovery can only be developed if we give our children the freedom to fail. Schools can build resiliency by stressing exploration over correctness. Schools need to be a place that doesn’t just teach the right answers; it should also be a place that teaches kids how to bounce back from failure. Schools need to be forgiving; our kids have the rest of their lives to face real demands.

41. What does the u nderlined word ―it‖ (paragraph 3) most probably refer to?

A. The risk-taking

B. The falling-down attempt

C. Putting one’s shir t on backwards

D. The black-or-white thinking

42. According to Paragraph 3, students lose basic coping skills because they _________.

A. lack critical thinking skills and self-reflection ability

B. lack parents’ understanding and teachers’ guiding

C. have too many tests and need encouragement

D. have too much independence and freedom

43. Marilyn Levine believes that ____________.

A. parents’ high expectations encourage more kids to be perfect

B. children are so afraid of failure that they try to avoid trying new things

C. parents are trying to prevent their children from appearing imperfect

D. children place a high value on trying new things

44. The writer’s attitude to ―mistakes‖ can best be described as _________.

A. cautious

B. critical

C. positive

D. doubtful

45. What might be the best title for the passage?

A. Making Mistakes in School Is a Must

B. Teaching Students to Bounce Back Is Popular

C. Students Shuld Learn Without Pressure

D. Anxiety Among Teenagers Is on the Rise

Tears are sort of like sports drinks, in that they contain various vitamins and minerals. For tear-drinking species

like butterflies and bees, tears make them energetic. Ecologist Carlos de la Ro and his team watched and photographed bees and butterflies drinking crocodile tears. A paper on the discovery is published in the latest issue of Ecology and the Environment. The crocodile seemed not to mind. It was relaxing on the banks of the Río Puerto Viejo in northeastern Costa Rica when the drink feast happened.

―It was one of those natural history moments that you long to see up close,‖ Ro, director of the La Selva Biological Station for the Organization for Tropical Field Studies in San Pedro, Costa Rica, said in a press conference. ―But then the question becomes, what’s going on in here? Why are these insects tapping into this resource?‖ He had previously seen butterflies and moths in the Amazon feeding on the tears of turtles. Other researchers have witnessed bees sipping tears.

A clue (线索) helping to explain why this happens comes from puddles (水坑). Butterflies often gather around mud puddles, sipping their mineral-laden water. Though bountiful in the ocean, salt is often a rare and valuable resource on land. We obviously get more than our fair share in salty foods, but butterflies and other insects need to look for other sources. In fact, Ro said that when minerals are rare in the soil, certain insects and other animals can acquire salt and minerals from sweat and even blood. When given those choices, tear sipping seems easier and more pleasant to taste. Tear drinkers can target humans too. In parts of Thailand, where people spend a lot of time outdoors and where minerals can be rare in local soils, bees have been known to sip human tears. It therefore makes sense that when our prehistoric ancestors got upset, smaller species would come around to clean up their tears. Nature is a wonderful recycler.

As for Ro, he was excited to photograph tear drinking in the moment. Some of the best discoveries are unplanned and simply occur when a person is in the right place at the right time, but is also prepared. ―I learned I have to carry a camera with me, because you never know what you’re going to find when you’re walking to the office or th e dining hall,‖ he said.

One day, for example, he noticed a new species of dragonfly on his way to breakfast. The dragonfly had changed from its larval (幼虫) form in the small pool of water caught in the cupped leaves of a bromeliad plant (凤梨科植物). Ro did a double take. Dragonflies don’t live on bromeliads. Or do they?

―Those are the kinds of things that, you know, you don’t plan for them, you can’t plan for them,‖ he said, adding that there was only one known species of dragonfly in the world that lives in bromeliads and now there will be two. ―You just keep your eyes open and have curiosity, and when you see something that doesn’t seem to fit, dig.‖

I try not to be biased(偏见)but I had my doubts about hiring Stevie. I had never had a mentally handicapped employee. He was short, a little fat, with the smooth facial features and thick-tongued speech of Down’s Syndrome(唐氏综合症). I thought most of my customers would be uncomfortable around Stevie, so I closely watched him for the first few weeks.

I shouldn’t have worried. After the first week, Stevie had my staff wrapped around his fat little finger, and within

a month my regular trucker customers had adopted him as their official truck stop mascot(吉祥物). He was eager to laugh and eager to please, but fierce in his attention to his duties. Every salt and pepper shaker was exactly in its place, not a coffee spill was visible when Stevie got done with the table. Our only problem was convincing him to wait to clean a table until after the customers were finished.

Over time, we learned that he lived with his mother, a widow who was disabled. Money was tight, and what I paid him was probably the difference between them being able to live together and Stevie being sent to a group home. That's why the restaurant was a sad place that morning last August, the first morning in three years that Stevie missed work. He was at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester getting a heart operation. His social worker said there was a good chance he would come through the operation in good shape and be back at work in a few months.

Excitement ran through the staff later that morning when word came that he was out of operation, in recovery, and doing fine. Frannie, my head waitress, did a little dance when she heard the good news. Belle Ringer, one of our regular trucker customers, stared at her and asked, ―Okay, Frannie, what was that all about?‖

"We just got word that Stevie is out of operation and going to be okay." Then s he sighed, ―but I don't know how he and his Mom are going to handle all the bills. From what I hear, they're barely getting by as it is."

Belle Ringer nodded thoughtfully, and Frannie hurried off to wait on the rest of her tables.

After the morning rush, Frannie walked into my office. She had a paper napkin (餐巾) in her hand.

"What's up?" I asked.―I cleared off that table where Belle Ringer was sitting after he left, and I found this. She ha nded the napkin to me, and there $20 bills fell onto my desk when I opened it. On the outside, in big, bold letters, was printed "Something For Stevie".

That was three months ago. Today is New Year’s day , the first day Stevie is supposed to be back to work. I arranged to have his mother bring him to work, met them in the parking lot and invited them both to celebrate his day back. I led them toward a big table. Its surface was covered with coffee cups and dinner plates, all sitting slightly on dozens of folded paper napkins.

"First thing you have to do, Stevie, is clean up this mess," I said. Stevie looked at me, and then pulled out one of the napkins. It had "Something for Stevie" printed on the outside. As he picked it up, two $10 bills fell onto the table. Stevie stared at the money, then at a ll the napkins with his name printed on them. I turned to his mother. ―There's more than $10,000 in cash and checks on that table, all from truckers and trucking companies that heard about your problems. Happy Thanksgiving!‖

While everybody else was busy shaking hands and hugging each other, Stevie, with a big, big smile on his face, was busy clearing all the cups and dishes from the table.

55. What made the writer not fully satisfied with Stevie’s work?

A. He seldom communicated with customers.

B. He coul dn’t pay attention to his duties.

C. He often spilled cups of coffee

D. He usually cleaned the table too early.

56. By saying the underlined words in Paragaraph 3, the author meant that the money she paid Stevie

____________ .

A. could help Stevie out of the trouble

B. could send Stevie to a group home

C. couldn’t thoroughly solve Stevie’s problem

D. could make a great difference to Stevie’s life

57. According to the passage, Frannie sighed for Stevie’s ___________.

A. health problem

B. work problem

C. financial problem

D. mental problem

58. What did Belle Ringer do after he heard about Stevie’s condition?

A. He donated a small sum of money

B. He discussed it with Frannie

C. He went to see the writer

D. He wrote a letter to Stevie

A. Stevie could pick up the money that was given to him.

Reasons for Learning a Foreign Language

In the United Stated, many high schools require at least two years of foreign language study for graduation. Actually, becoming fairly fluent in a foreign language provides many more benefits. As our world becomes increasingly international, the importance of learning a second (or third) language will only continue to grow.

61._______________ Learning a second language will have a powerful effect on your success in business. The ability to transform freely in multiple languages is so important, in fact, that many companies actually offer financial benefits to employees who can achieve fluency. If you are working with the general US population, you will probably see the greatest professional gain by learning Spanish, but almost every language is spoken somewhere in the melting pot. Whether you are a doctor learning to communicate directly with more of your patients or a customer service representative learning to solve more customers’ problems, expanding your language abilities will help your work greatly.

62._______________ Because learning a second language requires such a basic change in ideas, it will provide many intellectual(智力的) benefits as well. Much like studying a musical instrument, learning a foreign language will provide a mental challenge that will increase your intellectual strength in both school and business. This effect is so strong that researchers have found each year of language study results in measurable gains on both college and graduate school exams.

63. _______________ Because we are used to speaking, reading, and even thinking in our native language since birth, we can’t often pay attention to various grammatical errors. When you learn a second language, your study of the foreign language will force you to draw comparisons and reevaluate your understanding of English grammar. Not only will you learn a second language, but you will actually learn to communicate more clearly in your first language!

64. ______________ Traveling either on your own or in a study abroad program provides many opportunities to study

a foreign culture and learn to think outside of your own culture’s assumptions. As an English speaker in a foreign country, however, your ability to actually experience the country’s real culture will be fairly limited. By learning a foreign language before traveling, however, you will actually be able to get past the tourist experience to see what the country is really like on the inside. As an added bonus(意外的好处),you can also perfect your language skills during your stays.

65. _____________ Not only will language learning benefit you in the long term, but it can also help you pay for college. Many scholarships are available for students who speak a certain language or understand a particular culture. Because these scholarships are offered to a limited group, you will actually have a much higher chance of winning these scholarships than you would in some of the more well-known programs.
