Social changes in Women’s lives

The greatest recent social changes have been in the lives of women. During the twentieth century there has been a remarkable shortening of the proportion(比例)of a women’s life spent in caring for children. A woman marrying at the end of the nineteenth century would probably have been in her middle twenties, and would be likely to have seven or eight children, of whom four or more lived till they were five years old. By the time the youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early fifties and would expect to live a further twenty years, during which custom, opportunity and health made it unusual for her to get paid work. Today women marry younger and have fewer children. Usually a woman’s youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five and can be expected to live another thirty-five years and is likely to take paid work until retirement at sixty. Even while she has the care of children, her work is lightened by household appliances(家用电器)and convenient foods.

This important change in women’s life-pattern has only recently begun to have its full effect on women’s economic position. Even a few years ago most girls left school at the first opportunity, and most of them took a full-time job. However, when they married, they usually left work at once and never returned to it. Today the school-leaving age is sixteen, but many girls stay at school after that age, and though women tend to marry younger, more married women stay at work at least until shortly before their first child is born. Very many more afterwards return to full or part-time work.. Such changes have led to a new relationship in marriage, with the husband and wife accepting a greater sharp share of the duties and satisfactions of family life, and with both husband and wife sharing more equally in providing the money, and returning home, according to their abilities and interests of each of them.

56. For women at the beginning of the twentieth century the time spent taking care of

A.is younger when her children are old enough to look after themselves

B.does not like her own children

C.need not worry about her children’s food

D.likes to share more equally in money with husband

59. The new life-pattern reflected in the relationship in marriage is the result of _______

A . husband’s finding greater satisfactions of family life

B. wive’s abilities in running the home

C. women’s improved economic position

D.husband and wife fighting for their own interests

Decreasing grain prices along with growing costs of production means Chinese farmers are unlikely to see a significant rise in income next year.

China's economic planning chief Ma Kai expressed the concern as the government

undertakes an ambitious program to improve rural people's lives.

Grain prices have been dropping since April; and prices of wheat, corn and rice fell 5 per cent from August to October compared with the same period last year, Ma, minister of the National Development and Reform Commission, told an annual meeting on development and reform held over the weekend.

Meanwhile, prices of production materials rose 9.1 per cent year on year during the first 10 months.

The situation makes it difficult to achieve a "new socialist countryside," which was last week highlighted(引起注意) as a new concept and "common action" of the whole Party and nation.

Vice-Minister of Agriculture Yin Chengjie also said China's entry to the World Trade Organization also creates hurdles for income rises for the country's 780 million farmers.

Farmers' income is expected to increase by 8 per cent this year, hitting the target set by the central government at the beginning of this year.

Last year, per capita net income (个人平均纯收入),of Chinese farmers reached 2,936 yuan (US$362), up 6.8 per cent year on year, and the highest increase since 1997.

Ma also said China would continue to seek fast, steady economic growth in 2006 but more efforts will be made to deal with the challenges brought about by overheating in some industrial sectors (区域). (from China Daily, December 5, 2005)

A. 2002

B. 2003

C. 2004

D. 2005

63. Which of the following statements is true?

A. Grain prices in 2004 were a bit lower than those in 2005.

B. The development overheats in all industrial sectors.

C. A big income rise for farmers is unlikely in 2006.

Recently a Beijing father sent in a question at an Internet forum (论坛) asking what "PK" meant.

"My family has been watching the 'Super Girl' singing competition TV programme. My little daughter asked me what 'PK' meant, but I had no idea," explained the puzzled father.

To a lot of Chinese young people who have been playing games online, it is impossible not to know this term. In such Internet games, "PK" is short for "Player Kill", in which two players fight until one ends the life of the other.

In the case of the "Super Girl" singing competition, "PK" was used to refer to the stage where two singers have to compete with each other for only one chance to go up in competition ranking.

Like this father, Chinese teachers at high schools have also been finding their students' compositions using Internet jargons which are difficult to understand. A high school teacher from Tianjin asked her students to write compositions with simple language, but they came up with a lot of Internet jargons that she didn't understand.
