Robert Spring, a 19th-century forger, was so good at his job that he was able to make his living for 15 years by selling false signatures of famous Americans. Spring was born in England in 1813 and arrived in Philadelphia in 1858 to open a bookstore. At first he made some money by selling his small but real collection of early US autographs. Discovering his ability at copying handwriting, he began imitating signatures of George Washington and Ben Franklin and writing them on the title pages of old books. In order not to be found out, he sent his forgeries to England and Canada for sale.

Forgers have a hard time selling their products. A forger can't go to a respectable buyer but must deal with people who don't have much knowledge in the field. Forgers have many ways to make their work look real. For example, they buy old books to use the aged paper of the title page, and they can treat paper and ink with chemicals.

In Spring's time, fight after the Civil War, Britain was still fond of the southern states. So, Spring invented a respectable lady known as Miss Fanny Jackson, the only daughter of General "Stonewall" Jackson. For several years Miss Fanny's financial problems forced her to sell a great number of letters belonging to her famous father. Spring had to work very hard to satisfy the demand. All this activity did not prevent Spring from dying in poverty.

Jim was born after his elder brother and sister. He could learn many things from them. Soon, he developed his own way of doing things by developing his mind through his interest in creating stories. He read more than most children and he gathered his inspiration from history books. In school, his athletic interests were basketball and bike, especially high jump. When he found he could jump a little higher than most students, he decided that jumping over a high bar would be his specialty.

Jim continued his learning interest in history which included serious college study, and a Master's degree. He is now a university professor at a small university. In the United States there are many schools that have history departments. There are large universities with as many as 60 thousand students and small universities with as few as 2 000 students. His degree from a large university with a strong history department has helped him get a good job.

In the United States, when one becomes rich, he wants people to know it. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what keeping up with the Joneses is about. It is the story of someone who tries to look as rich as his neighbors.

The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself: He began earning $125 a week at the age of 23. That was a lot of money in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighborhood outside New York City. When he saw that rich people rode horses, Momand went horseback riding every day. When he saw that rich people had servants, Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbors.

It was like a race, but one could never finish this race because one was always trying to keep up. The race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They moved back to an apartment in New York City.

Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things just to keep up with rich life-style of their neighbors. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series of short stories. He called it "Keeping up with the Joneses", because "Jones" is a very common name in the United States. "Keeping up with the Joneses" came to mean keeping up with rich life-style of the people around you. Momand's series appeared in different newspapers across the county for over 28 years.

People never seem to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. And there are "Joneses" in every city of the world. But one must get tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses because no matter what one does, Mr. Jones always seems to be ahead.

第62题:

According to people who saw it, a large, bright object "exploded" over a. Siberian forest in 1908, making a very loud noise and causing a spectacular "cloud of fire." Surprisingly, scientists did not visit the area until 1927. If anything, they were expecting to find a large hole and fragments(碎片)of rock that would indicate the impact of a meteor(流星). Instead, they found an area with fallen trees radiating(辐射)out from a central point, and largely destroyed by fire. Recent studies concluded that an object exploded about three miles above the ground. If this destruction was not caused by a meteor, then what did cause it? This is a tantalizing question. Some scientists think that a small comet(彗星)exploded just before colliding(碰撞) with the earth and ignited the forest. Recently, a few scientists have noticed that the area looks as if an atomic explosion took place, but they have no explanations of how or why. There is even a theory that a spaceship from another planet exploded while trying to land on the earth. To date, the evidence for all these theories is very mainly for educated guess.

第66题:

It was surprising that ______.

A.the "explosion" caused a loud sound and a big fire

B.the "explosion" caused much damage to the forest

The President: Let me answer the knowledge economy(经济)question first. And let me answer by telling you what I have tried to do in the United States. I have tried to produce a situation in America in which the doors of universities and colleges are open to every young person who has sufficient academic achievement(足够的文化程度)to get in, that there are no financial burdens(经济负担)of any kind. And we have not completely achieved it. But have made a great deal of progress.

Now, why would I do that? Because I believe that the more advanced an economy becomes, the more important it is to have a higher and, higher percentage of people with a university education. Let me tell you how important it is in the United States. We count our people-- every ten years we do a census and we count the number of the American people and we get all kinds of information on them. In the 1990 Census, younger Americans who had a college degree were very likely to get good jobs and have their incomes grow. Younger Americans who didn't go to university at all were

likely to get jobs where their incomes went down and were much more likely to be unemployed.

And the more advanced China's economy becomes, the more that will be true of China—the more you will need very large number of people getting university education and technical education.

Choose the best word or phrase for each numbered blank and mark A, B,C, or Don your ANSWER SHEET 1. Text Most young people enjoy physical activities, walking, cycling, football, or mountaineering. These who have a passion 26 climbing high and difficult mountains are often 27 with astonishment. Why are men and women 28 to suffer cold and hardship, and to 29 on high mountains? This astonishment is caused, probably, by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activities 30 which men give their leisure. There are no man-made rules, as there are for 31 as golf and football. There are, of course, rules of different kinds which it would be dangerous to 32 , but it is this freedom from man-made rules 33 makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to their own 34 . If we 35 mountaineering with other more familiar sports, we might think that one big difference is 36 mountaineering is not a “team work”. However, it is only our misunderstanding. There are, in fact, no :matches”37 “teams”of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may 38 , obviously, there is teamwork. A mountain climber knows that he may have to fight with natural 39 that ate stronger and more powerful than man. His sport requires high mental and 40 qualities. A mountain climber 41 to improve on skill year after year. A skier is probably past his best by the age of thirty, and most international tennis champions 42 in their early twenties. But it is not 43 for men of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps. They may take more 44 than younger men, but they probably climb more skill and less 45 of effort, and they certainly experience equal enjoyment.

Passage 1 Advertisement can be thought of “as the means of making known in order to buy or sell goods or services.” Advertisement aims to increase people’s awareness and arouse interest. It tries to inform and to persuade. The media are all used to spread the message. The press offers a fairly cheap method, and magazines are used to reach special sections of the market. The cinema and commercial radio are useful for local market. Television, although more expensive, can be very effective. Public notices are fairly cheap and more permanent in their power of attraction. Other ways of increasing consumer interest are through exhibitions and trade fairs as well as direct mail advertisement. There can be no doubt that the growth in advertisement is one of the most striking features of the western world in this century. Many businesses such as those handling frozen foods, liquor, tobacco and medicines have been built up largely by advertisement. We might ask whether the cost of advertisement is paid for by the producer or by the customer. Since advertisement forms part of the cost of production, which has to be covered by the selling price, it is clear that it is the customer who pays for the advertisement. However, if large-scale advertisement leads to increased demand, production costs are reduced, and the customer pays less. It is difficult to measure exactly the influence of advertisement on sales. When the market is growing, advertisement helps to increase demand. When the market is shrinking, advertisement may prevent a bigger fall in sales than would occur without its support. What is clear is that businesses would not pay large sums for advertisement if they were not convinced of its value to them. 1. Advertisement is often used to _______. A. deceive customers B. increase production C. arouse suspicion D. push the sale 2. The word “media ” (in the first paragraph) includes_______ A. the press B. television C. radio D. all of the above 3. Advertisement is mainly paid for by ________ A. the customer B. the producer C. increased sales D. reduced prices 4. Advertisement can increase demand ________ A. all the time B. in any circumstances
