Here are two letters from our readers expressing their concern about school assessment:

Students should be allowed to study without worrying about grades．Fortunately, most educators realize that students have different interests and abilities．However, grade-based assessment is still very common．Grades often hold back creativity．Competing for better grades causes many students to turn down opportunities to go in for music, drama and sports．Grades are also an unfair measure of a student’s ability．I do not demand, as some extremists do, that grades should no longer be recorded．However, I do believe that less importance should be placed on grades．I hope that someday grades will become optional at Village High School．

Let’s face the facts about grades．Grades perform three basic functions．First, grades get students to work at their highest level of competence．Second, they act as an encouragement for hardworking students and as a warning to those who are not．Finally, grades are an effective standard by which to measure students’ achievement．Good grades help students to get jobs and to get into university．I’ve spoken with a number of students who have jobs, and most of them say that they were hired mainly because of their grades．My grades helped me get a part-time job and will help me get into university next year．I think grades are extremely important at Village High School．

Arctic Melt Opens Northwest Passage
The famed Northwest Passage — a direct shipping route from Europe to Asia across the Arctic Ocean —is ice free for the first time since satellite records began in 1978, scientists reported Sept．16, 2007．The passage is a shortcut between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans through the Canadian Arctic．It would save valuable time and fuel for ships that now travel through the Suez Canal in Egypt or the Panama Canal in Central America．Climate models had projected the passage would eventually open as warming temperatures melted the Arctic sea ice —but no one had predicted it would happen this soon．“We’re prob ably 30 years ahead of schedule in terms of the loss of the Arctic sea ice,” said Mark Serreze, a senior scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Colorado．“We’re on this fast track of change．”
That rapid melting is ratcheting（渐进） up international competition for control over the newly accessible shipping lanes and exposed natural resources．Canada, for example, claims it has full rights over the parts of the passage that pass its territory．The U．S and European Union say the passage is in international waters．Meanwhile Russia laid claim to the sea floor at the North Pole this August, planting a flag there in the hopes of securing the Arctic’s potential bonanza of oil and minerals．

Chinese government is set to conduct its first national survey of pollution sources in February to help control environmental deterioration in the country．The study will identify and collect data on sources of industrial, agricultural and residential pollution for two months, the Xinhua News Agency said, citing the head of the State Environmental Protection Administration, or SEPA．
“The results of the census will not be linked to any punishment or evaluation of the performance of local administrations,” said Zhou Shengxian, SEPA’s director．Administrations, companies and institutions “should not fear repercussions but should instead guarantee true, credible results．”
Last year, SEPA said China’s environment was facing a grave situation, with several major rivers and lakes clogged by industrial waste．China’s environmental clean-up is compromised by more than two decades of rapid economic growth, and a lack of technology especially．
Earlier, Japan has said it would try to help China ease its air and water pollution in some north-western Chinese provinces．Xinhua did not elaborate on details of the study, which was commissioned by China’s State Council in 2006 after experts complained about untrustworthy statistics on the sources and extent of pollution．
“Collecting data of various pollution sources will be an important basis for environmental protection．” Vice premier Zeng Peiyan was quoted as saying．Every province, autonomous region and municipality has set up a census office and will report to a main centre staffed by officials from SEPA and the Ministry of Agriculture, Xinhua said．

BEIJING, May 13 -- The strength of this earthquake is being compared to the destructive force of the Tangshan earthquake in 1976 which killed tens of thousands．Seismologists are urging calm and telling the public not to believe rumors about more earthquakes．Jiang Haikun says the energy from the Wenchuan earthquake was as huge as the Tangshan earthquake in 1976, which killed 240,000 people．
