Here are two letters from our readers expressing their concern about school assessment:

(1)

Students should be allowed to study without worrying about grades.Fortunately, most educators realize that students have different interests and abilities. However, grade-based assessment is still very common.Grades often hold back creativity.Competing for better grades causes many students to turn down opportunities to go in for music, drama and sports.Grades are also an unfair measure of a student’s ability.I do not demand, as some extremists do, that grades should no longer be recorded. However, I do believe that less importance should be placed on grades.I hope that someday grades will become optional at Village High School.

Magdalena Smith, President,

Drama Club

(2)

Let’s face the facts about grades.Grades perform three basic functions.First, grades get students to work at their highest level of competence.Second, they act as an encouragement for hardworking students and as a warning to those who are not. Finally, grades are an effective standard by which to measure students’ achievement.Good grades help students to get jobs and to get into university.I’ve spoken with a number of students who have jobs, and most of them say that they were hired mainly because of their grades. My grades helped me get a part-time job and will help me get into university next year.I think grades are extremely important at Village High School.

Arctic Melt Opens Northwest Passage

The famed Northwest Passage — a direct shipping route from Europe to Asia across the Arctic Ocean —is ice free for the first time since satellite records began in 1978, scientists reported Sept.16, 2007.The passage is a shortcut between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans through the Canadian Arctic. It would save valuable time and fuel for ships that now travel through the Suez Canal in Egypt or the Panama Canal in Central America.Climate models had projected the passage would eventually open as warming temperatures melted the Arctic sea ice —but no one had predicted it would happen this soon.“We’re prob ably 30 years ahead of schedule in terms of the loss of the Arctic sea ice,” said Mark Serreze, a senior scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Colorado.“We’re on this fast track of change.”

That rapid melting is ratcheting(渐进) up international competition for control over the newly accessible shipping lanes and exposed natural resources.Canada, for example, claims it has full rights over the parts of the passage that pass its territory. The U.S and European Union say the passage is in international waters.Meanwhile Russia laid claim to the sea floor at the North Pole this August, planting a flag there in the hopes of securing the Arctic’s potential bonanza of oil and minerals.

The opening of the Northwest Passage is clearly shown in a mosaic of 200 satellite images from the European Space Agency (ESA).The snapshots (pictures) also reveal that the Northeast Passage — a similar route that winds along Siberia’s coast instead of Canada’s — is nearly clear.

Those passages have been traversed in the past — with difficulty — including in recent years as ice cover thinned. But this is the first time the Northwest Passage has been “fully navigable” since ESA began measuring the Arctic sea ice with

satellites.Commercial shipping may be a while off yet.The passage is seasonal, is likely to be unstable enough to endanger commercial vessels, and still lacks supporting ports along the way.

69.What does the underlined sentence in the second paragraph mean?

A.The ships we make run much faster than before.

B.The sea ice in the South Pole melts faster than before.

C.The sea ice in the North Pole melts faster than before.

D.Traveling through the Northwest Passage is faster than before.

70.Why do the countries around the Arctic pay so much attention to the rapid melting?

A.Because they all compete for the newly accessible passage and exposed natural resources.

B.Because they all want to own the full right of the passage and potential oil there.C.Because they all want to make the passage international waters and the resources public.

D.Because they all give up part rights over the parts of the passage that pass its territory.

71.From the satellite images of ESA, we can see the route _____.

A.near the USA, will be likely to open as soon as possible.

B.near Canada, will be likely to open as soon as possible.

C.near Russia, will be likely to open as soon as possible.

D.near Antarctica, will be likely to open as soon as possible.

72.What’s the advantage of the Northwest Passage?

A.The passage is seasonal.B.The passage lacks aiding ports.C.The passage is full of danger.D.The passage is a more direct route.

Chinese government is set to conduct its first national survey of pollution sources in February to help control environmental deterioration in the country. The study will identify and collect data on sources of industrial, agricultural and residential pollution for two months, the Xinhua News Agency said, citing the head of the State Environmental Protection Administration, or SEPA.

One possible version:

Recently a city authority has finished a survey about Senior 3 students’ daily habits and health condition.

As can be seen from the graph, the students have a large range of bad habits.About 20% of the students show great interest in playing computer games.Compared to those who go on a diet, 30% of the students don’t have any breakfast, which is 15% more in number. But to our surprise, as many as 80% o f the students don’t take any exercise. Then, about 50% of the students prefer to oversleep on Sundays. As we know, a sound body is a necessary guarantee for efficient learning.More and more students have no interest in sports, which in turn has a bad effect on their study and bodies. Therefore, it’s high time that measures should be taken to solve the problem, such as taking exercise regularly, having breakfast at the right time and making use of computers for information to broaden our horizons and so on.

高考英语模拟试卷 题号I II III IV V总分 得分 一、阅读理解(本大题共10小题,共25.0分) A It's almost 2 a.m.at Lightning in a Bottle,a music festival in Bradley,Calif. The last song of the night is the "Clean Up Song" by Mr.Nigel&Friends.Abruptly,heads bow and backs bend as people pick up empty cups, dirty forks, and festival guides, and drop them into cans. "It works," laughs Jesse Shannon, marketing director of Do LaB,the organization that hosts Lightning in a Bottle."It reminds people in an interesting and cute way not to leave everything on the dance floor." The "Clean Up Song" has been a tradition at Lightning in a Bottle since the beginning. It's just one of the innovative ways music festivals are trying to lessen their impact on the environment. Outdoor festivals have been called environmental disasters.A 2006 analysis conducted by Burning Man,the annual gathering in the northwestern Nevada desert, showed that the event produced 91 million pounds of carbon emissions(排放),or 1,400 pounds per person. These events literally produce tons of waste, anything from 60 tons at Lightning in a Bottle in 2015 to almost 550 tons at Bonnaroo in 2017. Burning Man has a strong "Leave No Trace" policy.Lightning in a Bottle hosts talks from climate activists(积极分子).Outsides Lands Music and Arts Festival in San Francisco has worked with Clean Vibes to responsibly manage its waste. In 2016,it diverted(使转向)91 percent of all waste from landfill(垃圾填埋池)by encouraging recycling and reuse. Festivals hope they can affect people's attitudes and awareness instead of simply reducing their own environmental effects."People at a festival are exploring an alternative way of living, and it's a great opportunity to reassess your relationship to waste." Mr.Shannon says."People have been gathering for as long as there have been people," Shannon says."So it's not something we are going to stop doing. It's more what we can do to reduce the impacts of these gatherings and at the same time have a positive effect. We are confident we are helping people's mind change. We still have a long way to go." 1.What is unique about Lightning in a Bottle?______ A. It lasts all night. B. It is song-themed. C. It makes people moved and bow. D. It is likely to benefit nature. 2.What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph 4 refer to?______ A. "Leave No Trace" policy. B. Lightning in a Bottle. C. Outsides Lands Music and Arts Festival. D. Clean Vibes. 3.What does Mr.Shannon's attitudes towards the festivals mentioned above?______ A. neutral B. indifferent C. bright D. effortless

A For the business traveler who’s all about efficiency: check out these hotels that will get you in and out with a minimum trouble. When you’re pressed for time on a business trip, nothing can infuriate you more than a slow hotel check-in process. On your next trip, try these hotels that offer a speedier check-in process. ◆ Marriott Detroit Airport Another option for business travelers in a hurry: Marriott is rolling out its mobile check-in app to 325 hotels this year, including the Marriott Detroit Airport hotel. (I’ve tested the app itself but not for a real visit quite yet.) here is the basic idea: you download the iPhone or Android app. The night before, you can “check-in” virtually. When you arrive, you get an alert that the room is ready and your key, which is already tied to your reservation, is waiting for you at the desk. ◆Hyatt Regency Minneapolis I happened to stay at this hotel recently and liked how fast the kiosk check-in works. The kiosk asks you to insert your credit card, similar to an airport terminal. The whole process took about 3 minutes. When I left, I was equally impressed with the fast check-out: An agent meets you in the lobby with, an iPad and asks for an email to use for a receipt. The big advantage: you never have to wait in line. ◆Radisson LaCrosse The Radisson is trying to make the kiosk process even faster. At a few select hotels like the Radisson Lacrosse in Wisconsin, you use a mobile app to register and then receive a bar code by email or text. When you get to the kiosk, you can scan the bar code to get your key without any other steps required. It’s super fast. You can find this new check-in system at the Radisson hotels in Salt Lake City, Seattle, and Phoenix as well. 1.What does the word ‘infuriate’, in Paragraph 2 most probably mean? A.annoy B.remind C.amuse D.impress 2.Which two hotels offer a mobile app for customers to check in? A.Marriott Detroit Airport and Yotel New York. B.Marriott Detroit Airport and Radisson LaCrosse.
