ABS Graft Polymer, Finished Parts Material Requirements

3 types: without Index, A, B Previous issues

TL 527: 1966-02, 1987-06, 1997-11, 2002-12Changes

The following changes have been made compared with TL 527: 2002-12:–Table 1 and Section 5 "Notes on testing" revised –VW 50190 added

–Bending test acc. to DIN EN ISO 178 added

–Testing of ball indentation hardness according to DIN EN ISO 2039-1 omitted –Hardness testing acc. to DIN 53505-D omitted –Referenced standards updated Scope

This Technical Supply Specification (TL) defines the material requirements for finished parts made of ABS graft polymer such as, e.g., seat side trim panels, radiator grilles, glove compartment flaps, trims, and covers.

NOTE 1 Using ABS for components that are located on the vehicle exterior and that are subjected to direct solar radiation is not possible without appropriate surface protection (e.g., paint finish ac‐cording to TL 211).

Description

Description example for type with high impact strength:

ABS acc. to TL 527

Requirements General requirements

Approval of first supply and changes acc. to Volkswagen Standard VW 01155.Emission behavior according to VW 50180 (if required in the drawing).Resistance to open-air weathering according to VW 50185.

Colorimetric evaluation according to VW 50190 (if required in the drawing).Avoidance of hazardous substances acc. to VW 91101.

10 finished parts are required for complete testing. For radiator grilles, 5 finished parts are required.Appearance

The surface and interior of the finished parts must be free of flaws and processing defects such as flow lines, cracks, voids, or similar faults. Sink marks at the base of ribs and reinforcements are permissible only if they do not adversely affect function, appearance, and/or assembly of the part. The finished parts must allow for flawless installation. After storage and use, they must not exhibit the dust accumulation which is characteristic of non-antistatic plastics.Manufacture

Injection molding Types

–TL 527ABS graft polymer with high impact strength for injection-molded parts which are easy to manufacture, e.g., seat side trim panels.

–TL 527-A ABS graft polymer with dimensional stability up to 90 °C for parts that are subject to greater heat load due to their shape and design, e.g., radiator grille.–

TL 527-B

ABS graft polymer with dimensional stability up to 100 °C for parts installed in positions that require greater dimensional stability under heat, e.g., glove compartment flap.

Marking according to VDA 260

All types: > ABS

Prior to testing, the specimens required for the individual tests must be conditioned for at least 48 h in the ISO 554–23/50 standard climate.

Notes on testing Material

The identity test is performed by means of infrared spectroscopy.Flexural strength

The flexural stress is determined at maximum load acc. to DIN EN ISO 178; except that the specimen deviates as follows: length: (50 ± 1) mm; width: (6 ± 0,2) mm; thickness according to product thickness (up to a maximum of 4 mm); support separation: 40 mm; support radius (1,0 to 1,2) mm; test rate:(14 ± 1) mm/min. Specimens taken from finished parts with one-sided graining or paint are placed on the test machine support so that the grained or painted side faces the loading edge.Notched impact strength

If, for reasons of equipment and/or specimen shape and size, a test according to Table 1, con‐sec. no. 4 cannot be performed, the following procedure may be used as a substitute:

Impact resistance test (broadside impact) acc. to DIN EN ISO 179-1; except that the specimen de‐viates as follows: length: (50 ± 1) mm, width: (6 ± 0,2) mm, thickness according to product thickness (up to a maximum of 4 mm); support separation: 40 mm, pendulum impact tester up to 4 J, e.g., type 5102 made by Zwick.

The specimens are provided with a 0,8 mm wide notch on the broad side. The notch depth is 1/3 of the specimen thickness. The edges outlining the notch root must have a curvature radius of < 0,1 mm.

TL 527: 2010-11

Specimens taken from finished parts with one-sided graining or paint must be notched on the grained or painted side and then placed on the supports of the pendulum impact tester so that the center of the notch is located precisely in the impact plane. It is important to ensure that the notch is on the side facing away from the hammer edge.

Please note that this procedure requires prior agreement.Impact strength

If, for reasons of equipment and/or specimen shape and size, a test according to Table 1, con‐sec. no. 6 cannot be performed, the following procedure may be used as a substitute:

Impact resistance test (broadside impact) acc. to DIN EN ISO 179-1; except that the specimen de‐viates as follows: length: (50 ± 1) mm, width: (6 ± 0,2) mm, thickness according to product thickness (up to a maximum of 4 mm); support separation: 40 mm, pendulum impact tester up to 4 J, e.g., type 5102 made by Zwick.

Specimens taken from finished parts with one-sided graining or paint are to be placed on the supports of the pendulum impact tester so that the grained or painted side faces the direction of impact. Please note that this procedure requires prior agreement.Elevated-temperature behavior

Aging at elevated temperature test acc. to DIN 53497, method B, performed on at least two complete finished parts; aging period (22 + 2) h.Low-temperature behavior

A minimum of 2 complete finished parts are aged in air at (-30 ± 1) °C; aging period (22 + 2) h.High-temperature light exposure

If the number of exposure periods is not defined in the drawing, the following rule applies:– 3 periods of exposure for components in areas subject to indirect solar radiation.

– 5 periods of exposure for components in areas subject to direct solar radiation (e.g., door waist rail).

10 periods of exposure for components in areas subject to the highest solar radiation (e.g., rear shelf).
