If you are looking for an explanation of why we don’t get tough with criminals, you need only look at the numbers. Each year almost a third of the households in America are victims of violence or theft. This amounts to more than 41 million crimes, many more than we are able to punish. Besides, we already have 412,000 criminals locked in prisons. The painful fact is that the more crime there is the less we are able to punish it. We think that punishment deters crime, but it just might be the other way around. It just might be that crime deters (抑制) punishment: that there is so much crime that it simply cannot be punished.

Just as the decline in the number of high-school graduates has made it easier to gain admission to the college, the gradual increase in the criminal population has made it more difficult to get into prison: some of the most exclusive prisons now require about five previous serious crimes before an inmate is accepted into their correctional program. Our current crop of prisoners is an elite (精英) group, much more serious offenders than those who were once imprisoned in Alcatraz – the federal prison famous for housing the most dangerous criminals.

These features show that it makes little sense to blame the police, judges or correctional personnel for being soft on criminals. There is not much else they can do. The police can’t find most criminals and those they do find are difficult and costly to punish.

A few statistics from the Justice Department’s recent ―Report to the Nation on Crime and Justice‖ illustrate my point. Of every 100 serious crimes committed in America, only 33 are actually reported to the police. Of the 33 reported, about six lead to arrest. Of the six arrested, only three are prosecuted and convicted. Of the three convicted, only one is sent to prison. Of the select few sent to prison, more than half receive a maximum sentence of five years. The average inmate, however, leaves prison in about two years. Most prisoners gain early release not because parole boards are too easy on crime, but because it is

much cheaper to supervise a criminal in the community.

We could, of course, keep the prisoners locked up for a longer time. Yet when measured against the lower crimes rates this might produce, longer prison sentences are not worth the cost. The best estimates are that it costs an average of $14,000 to keep a person in prison for one year, much too expensive to be practicable as a national policy. So, my conclusion to the crime problem is: getting tough with criminals is not the answer.

58. What’s the author’s purpose i n writing Paragraph 4?

A. To further illustrate that crime deters punishment.

B. To criticize the police and court are too soft on criminals in America.

C. To expose how inefficient the justice system is in coping with the crime problem.

D. To prove that there is very little the justice system can do about the crime problem.

59. After reading the passage, we can safely infer that ___________.

A. the crime problem in the United States is quite serious

B. serious offenders in Alcatraz enjoyed some privileges

C. crimes in the US will be greatly reduced if the criminal justice system is tougher

D. it will be less costly for the governments to lock up prisoners for longer periods

60. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. More Punishment and More Crime

B. More Crime and Less Punishment

C. Causes of the Crime Problem

D. Today’s Prisoners in the US

Sometimes, we really want a chocolate bar or a cool sparkling drink. We usually have one, perhaps thinking, ―My body really needs it!‖But are you sure it’s really a demand from your body? It might just be bacteria in your stomach ―cheating‖ y ou into thinking that way, scientists say.

Our gut and stomach are home to 10,000 species of bacteria which get energy from our half-digested lunches. In return, they help us break down food and keep harmful bacteria out, The Atlantic reported. But a recent article in US journal Bio Essays suggests that these bacteria might tell us what to do and demand certain kinds of foods. The article, written by researchers from the University of New Mexico and the University of California, San Francisco, says that bacteria in our gut and stomach change our eating behavior to increase their fitness. For example, bacteria that specialize in sugar make us want sweet food. If we don’t give them what they want, they worry our minds until we eat sweet foods. The bacteria h ave some strategies to make us ―listen‖ to them, the article suggests. They may change the expression of our taste receptors, making certain foods taste better. They may release hormones to make us feel hungry. Or they may use the vagus nerve(迷走神经), which connects the stomach to the brain, to control our eating behavior. In other words, our brain and moods might be hostages held by a hijacker called bacteria.

Food Previous studies, however, told a different story. Craving is ―all in our heads‖, Science Daily once reported. When people desire a specific food, they keep imagining vivid images of that food, so that they have no brain power for any other task.

To reduce our desire for a chocolate bar, we need to focus our minds on other tasks, Science Daily said. For example, trying to imagine images of common sights or smells could kick those food images out of our minds. How about trying to imagine a rainbow instead? If that doesn’t work for us, at least we can use bacteria as a convenient excuse - ―I need a can of soda, not for me, but for my gut bacteria!‖

61. What do bacteria in your gut and stomach do, according to the article?

a. break down food

b. connect the stomach to the brain

A. ac

B. cd

B. They may make people feel hungry and think some foods are tastier than others.

C. They may change people’s facial expressions when eating some foods.

D. They may release some hormones to disturb people’s digestion systems.

63. The underlined word ―Carving‖ in Para.3 is closest in meaning to ―________.”

A. imagination

B. feeling

C. eagerness

D. emotion

64. To reduce our strong desire for a specific kind of food, we are advised to ______.

By the time his mother began leaving the cave on hunting expeditions, the baby wolf had learned well the law that forbade his approaching the entrance. Not only had this law been forcibly and many times impressed on him by his mother's nose and foot, but in him the instinct of fear was developing. Though never in his brief cave-life had he met with anything of which to be afraid, fear was in him. It had come down to him from a remote ancestry. It had been passed down through all the generations of wolves that had gone before.

So the grey little wolf knew fear, though he didn't know what stuff fear was made of. Possibly he accepted it as one of the restrictions of life. Hunger he had known; and when he could not relieve his hunger, he had felt restriction. The hard cave-wall, his mother's nose and foot, and hunger had borne in upon him that all was not freedom in the world, and that to life there were limitations and restrictions. These limitations and restrictions were laws.

Thus it was in obedience to the law laid down by his mother, and in obedience to the law of that unknown and nameless thing, fear, that he kept away from the white wall. When his mother was absent, he slept most of the time, while during the intervals that he was awake, he kept very quiet, preventing cries that tickled in his throat and strove for noise.

Once, lying awake, he heard a strange sound in the white wall. He did not know that it was a wolverine, standing outside, all trembling with its own daring, and cautiously smelling out the contents of the cave. The hair stood on end upon the grey wolf's back, but it stood silently. How was he to know that this thing that sniffed was a thing at which to stand his hair? It was not born of any knowledge of his, yet it was the visible expression of the fear that was in him, which was accompanied by concealment. The little wolf was in great terror, yet he lay without movement or sound, frozen into immobility, to all appearances dead.

But there were other forces at work in the little wolf, the greatest of which was growth. Instinct and law demanded of him obedience. But growth demanded disobedience. Growth is life, and life is for ever to make for light. In the end, one day, fear and obedience were swept away by the rush of life, and the little wolf sprawled toward the white wall. Unlike any other wall with which he had experience, this wall seemed to step back from him as he approached. So he entered it and bathed in the substance that composed it. The light had become painfully bright. Automatically, his eyes were adjusting themselves to the brightness, focusing themselves to meet the increased distance of objects―the trees that lined the stream, the opposing mountain that towered above the trees, and the sky that out-towered the mountain.

A great fear came upon him. But nothing happened. He forgot to be afraid. For the time fear had been defeated by growth, while growth assumed the appearance of curiosity. He stepped boldly out upon the air. He inspected the grass beneath him, and the dead trunk of the pine that stood on the edge of an open space among the trees. A squirrel, running around the base of the trunk, came full upon him, and gave him a great fright. He lay down and snarled. But the squirrel was as badly scared. It ran up the tree and from a point of safety, screamed back loudly.

This helped the little wolf's courage and he proceeded confidently on his way. The little wolf was learning. His misty little mind had already made an unconscious classification. There were live things and things not alive. Also, he must watch out for the live things. The things not alive remained always in one place, but the live things moved about, and there was no telling what they might do. Then there were the pebbles and stones that turned under him when he stepped upon them and from them he came to

know that the things not alive were not all in the same state as was his cave—also, that small things not alive were more likely than large things to fall down or turn over....

根据理解第一段,小狼“learned well the law that forbade his approaching the entrance….”以及“It had come down to him from a remote ancestry. It had been passed down through all the generations of wolves that had gone before.” 故选A 项。

A. He tried to keep away from the white wall是母狼教它的结果,不是出于本能。 C.He learned that…D.He came to understand…

The little wolf was in great terror, yet he lay without movement or sound, frozen into immobility, to all appearances dead“小狼很恐惧,趴在那儿一动不动,

Change who you are

Can you change your personality significantly? For example, if you are shy, can you turn yourself into an extrovert who never gets stage fright when speaking in public? It’s certainly not easy, but experts say it is possible.

First of all, you will never stay the same person. Several researches show a pers on’s personality naturally changes over time in response to life events such as entering a committed relationship or advancing in your career. From the ages of 20 to 65, people report increases in positive traits. Most people tend to become more agreeable, more responsible, and more emotionally stable. Their personalities improve as they mature.

When researchers talk about ―personality‖, they mean a characteristic pattern of thinking, feeling and behaving that is consistent over time and across situations. Personality is about 50 percent innate and 50 percent learned. Psychologists usually use the Big Five personality model. According to this model, the human personality can be divided into five broad categories or domains — openness, conscientiousness, agreeableness, neuroticism and extroversion. Some personality types are more successful than others. People who are more conscientious tend to do better in the workplace and school. People who score high on agreeableness and low on neuroticism tend to have more satisfying and stable relationships. Extroverts do better in social and entrepreneurial occupations.

Even small changes in a person’s personality can produce important effects on relationships, career, health and happiness. But change takes time. You start by changing the behavior and then, if you can maintain that new behavior over time, it gets encoded.

Where do you start? ―First, we have to recognize which pieces of our personality affect us,‖ says Richard Levak, a well-known personality expert who oft en appears in US TV programs. ―If I am always getting fired because I get into arguments with co-workers and always blame others, then I have to realize that I have to change something,‖ he says.

Don’t set your expectations too high. Be patient. Warren Ken naugh, a behavioral strategist in Sydney, Australia, says it’s important to start small. Identify a first step and then practice it without worrying about the initial results. It’s like learning to kick a football, you focus on the steps, not whether it go es in the goal.

You should also let the people close to you know what you’re doing. ―Not only can they be supportive,‖ Kennaugh says, ―but a change for you can also mean a change for them — one they may not be ready for, if they aren’t told beforehand.‖

(71)changed (72)undergo/have/experience (73)better (74)fall

(75)affect/influence/impact (76)key/essential (77)Advice/Suggestions/Tips (78)Find/Figure (79)Avoid (80)surprise

As is vividly shown in the table, the American parents surveyed think that the skills of communication, reading, math, teamwork and writing are most important for success, of which communication is their top priority.

To some extent, the ability to express an idea is more important than the idea itself, so it’s important to teach the children to learn to communicate. Additionally, reading, considered as a skill, will continuously make a person capable of gaining information and knowledge to be desired. As is well known, math enables a person smarter, while writing contributes to the improvement of reflection, imagination and creativity. Unwilling to get the children to work alone, the American parents prefer them to increase the skills of teamwork, which will surely make a difference to their productivity in the future.

Personally, children are parents what the future is to a country. Only when considerable emphasis is put on developing children’s skills for success can the children and a country have a bright future.

They say ―Make the best of a bad situation‖. But I believe the bad situation makes the best of you. Even the irritations of life can be useful. President Abraham Lincoln showed us how this is so.

One of his cabinet appointees, Edwin Stanton, frequently found flaws with the president and criticized him ---- sometimes in public. Lincoln seemed to show excessive patience with him. The president was asked why he kept such a man in a high level position.

Lincoln characteristically responded with a story. He told about a time he was visiting with an old farmer. He noticed a big horsefly biting the flank of the farmer’s horse. Lincoln said he reached over to brush the fly away. As he did so, the farmer s topped him and cautioned, ―Don’t do that, friend. That horsefly is the only thing keeping this old horse moving.‖

Even life’s many irritations and problems have their place. They may cause us to change directions. Or prod us to greater achievement. Or k eep us moving along when it’s easier to go nowhere.

Are you simply making the best of a bad situation, or will it make the best of you?

1. 用约30个词概括这段短文的内容;

(1) 谈谈你对逆境的看法;

1. 概述故事或提供论据时,不能直接用原文原句;

2. 作文中不能出现真实姓名和学校名称;

The passage narrates an instructive story of Lincoln visiting a farmer and his way of responding to bad situations, through which we can draw the philosophy that the bad situation makes the best of a person.

Personally, I share the same opinions with Abraham Lincoln. Though a bad situation may ruin a person, sometimes it can also bring out the best in you. We should accept the fact that it is rational for a bad situation to have its place in life. Whether one can succeed or fail depends on how he cope with bad

situations.

When facing adversity, we should learn to hone our perseverance, by virtue of which we can get somewhere. On no account should we take it for granted that everything in life is smooth. As we all know, life is a road with unexpected challenges. Only when we make the best of a bad situation will it make the best of us.

There can be little doubt that 4 classes can help the gifted children to graduate earlier and take their place in life sooner. However, to take these 5 out of the regular classes may create serious problems. I observed a number of 6 children who were taken out of a special class and placed in a 7 class. In the special class, they showed little ability to use their own judgment, relying 8 on their teachers? directions.
