For example, if a student wonders what teaching is like, he or she ca n choose to work in an elementary school classroom a few afternoons e ach month. 47 there are many benefits, opponents (反对者) 4 8 problems with the new requirement. First, they 49 that the main reason students go to school is to learn core subjects and s kills. Because service learning is time-consuming, students spend

50 time studying the core subjects. Second, they believe tha t forcing students to work without 51 goes against the law. B y requiring service, the school takes away an individual's freedom to choose.

In my view, service learning is a great way to 52 to the comm unity, learn new skills, and explore different careers. 53 ,

I don' t believe you should force people to help others —the 5

4 to help must come from the heart. I think the best 5

第三部分:阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

请认真阅读下列短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

When women sit together to watch a movie on TV, they usually talk sim ultaneously(同时的)about a variety of subjects, including children, men, careers and what' s happening in their lives. When groups of men and women watch a movie together, the men usually end up telling the women to shut up. Men can either talk or watch the screen -- they ca n' t do both -- and they don' t understand that women can. Besides, w omen consider that the point of all getting together is to have a goo d time and develop relationships -- not just to sit there like couch potatoes staring at the screen.

During the ad breaks, a man often asks a woman to explain the plot an d tell him where the relationship between the characters is going. He is unable, unlike women, to read the subtle body language signals th at reveal how the characters are feeling emotionally. Since women ori ginally spent their days with the other women and children in the gro up, they developed the ability to communicate successfully in order to maintain relationships. For a woman, speech continues to have suc h a clear purpose: to build relationships and make friends. For men, to talk is to relate the facts.

Men see the telephone as a communication tool for sending facts and i nformation to other people, but a woman sees it as a means of bonding.

A woman can spend two weeks on vacation with her girlfriend and, whe n she returns home, telephone the same girlfriend and talk for anothe r two hours.

There is no convincing evidence that social conditioning, the fact th at girls' mothers talked them more, is the reason why girls talk more than boys. Psychiatrist Dr Michael Lewis, author Social Behaviour an d Language Acquisition, conducted experiments that found mothers talk ed to and looked at, baby girls more often than baby boys. Scientif ic evidence shows parents res the brain bias of their children. Since a girl' s brain is better organized to send and receive speech , we therefore talk to them more. Consequently, mothers who try to talk to their sons are usually pointed to receive only short grunts in repl y.

56.While watching TV with others, women Usually talk a lot because th ey ________.

A. are afraid of awkward silence with their families and friends

B. can both talk and watch the screen at the Same time

C. think they can have a good time and develop relationships

D. have to explain the plot and body language to their husbands

57. After a vacation with her girlfriend, a woman would talk to her a gain on the phone for hours in order to ________.

A. experience the happy time again

B. keep a close tie with her

C. recommend her a new scenic spot

D. remind her of something for gotten

58. What does the author want to tell us most?

A. Women' s brains are better organized for language and communicatio n

B. Women love to talk because they are more sociable than men.

C. Men do not like talking because they rely more on facts.

D. Social conditioning is not the reason why women love talking.

59. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A. Women Are Socially Trained to Talk

B. Talking Ma intains Relationships

C. Women Love to Tal

k D. Men Talk Differently fro m Women

Have you ever noticed the colour of the water in a river or stream af ter a heavy rainfall? What do you think caused this change in colour? It is soil that has been washed into the river from the riverbank or from t}le nearby fields.

Components of Soft

Soil is made up of a number of layers(层),each having its own distinctive colour and texture. The upper layer is known as the litte r.It acts like a blanket.limiting temperature changes and reducing water loss. The topsoil layer is made up of small particles of rock m ixed with rotten plant and animal matter called humus(腐殖质),which is black and gives the topsoil its dark colour. This layer is usually rich in nutrients, oxygen, and water.Below the topsoil is the subsoi

l,a layer that contains more stones mixed with only small amounts of organic matter. This layer is lighter in colour because of the lack o f humus.Beneath the soil lies a layer of bedrock.

Soil forms from the bottom up.Over time bedrock is attacked b y rain, wind, frost, and snow.It is gradually broken down into small er particles in a process called weathering.Plants begin to grow,an d rotten materials enrich the topsoil. Most of the soil in Eastern Ca nada.for example. Was formed from weathered rock that was exposed wh en the ice disappeared l2.000 years ag0.

Water Beneath the Soil

Surface water collects and flows above the ground in lakes.po nds.and rivers.Once in the soil or rock,it is called groundwater.G ravity pulls groundwater through the soil in a process called percola tion(渗透).Eventually the water reaches a layer called the water tab le.Under this is bedrock through which water cannot percolate.

As water percolates downward,it dissolves organic matter and minerals from the soil and carries them to deeper layers. This causes a serious problem because plants require these nutrients for growth.

Soil pH

Soil can be acidic.neutral.or basic. The pH of the soil is d etermined by the nature of the rock

from which it was formed.and by the nature of t}le plants that grow and rot in it.

The acidity of rain and snow can lower the pH of the groundwat er that enters the soil.By burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil an d gasoline, humans have been contributing to higher levels of acidity in many soils. When fossil fuels are burned.gases are released into the air and then fall back to earth as acid rain.Acid soil increases 出e problem of carrying nutrients to lower soil levels. As nutrients are removed, soil is less fertile.Plants grow more slowly in acidic soil, and also become easily attacked by diseases.

67.The layer of soil that provides necessary nutrients for plant gro wth is called.

A.1itter B.topsoil C.humus D.subsoil

68.According to the text.which of the following is NOT true?

A.Soil forms from weathered rock on the earth surface.

B.The deeper layer of soil is darker in colour than t}le surface soi l.

C.Air pollution is partially responsible for acid soil.

D.Groundwater tends to carry away nutrients for plant growth.

69.We can infer from the passage that the water table lies

A.between the topsoil layer and the subsoil layer

B.in the subsoil layer above bedrock

C.between the subsoil layer and bedrock

D.in the bedrock layer beneath the subsoil

70.The underlined word “dissolve” is used to express the idea that organic matter and minerals from soil are .

A.rushed away into the river

B.cleaned and purified by water

C.destroyed and carried away by water

D.mixed with water and become part of it

Communication Principles

How you see yourself can make a great difference in how you communica te.“Every individual exists in a continually changing world of expe rience of which he(or she)is the center”.Many communication scholar s and social scientists believe that people are products of how other s treat them and of the messages others send them. But every day we e

xperience the centrality of our selves in communication.A student.f or instance, may describe a conflict with a teacher as unfair treatme nt:“I know my teacher doesn’t like the fact that I don’t agree wi th his opinions.and that’s why he gave me such a poor grade in that class.”The teacher might say the opposite. Each person may believe that he is correct and that the other person’s view is wrong.

The concept of serf originates in communication.Through verba l and nonverbal symbols, a child learns to accept roles in response t o the expectations of others. You establish self-image。The sort of p erson you believe you are,by how others think of you.Positive, nega tive, and neutral messages that you receive from others all play a ro le in determining who you are.Communication itself is probably best understood as a dialogue process. Our understanding of communication comes from our interactions with other people. In a more obvious way.c ommunication involves others in the sense that a competent communicat or considers what the other person needs and expects when selecting m essages to share. So,the communication begins with the self,as defi ned largely by others, and involves others,as defined largely by the self.

Communication Occurs almost every minute of your life.If you are not communicating with yourself(thinking, planning, reacting to the world around you),you are observing others and drawing inference s from their behavior.Even if the other person did not intend a mess age for you.you gather observations and draw specific conclusions.A person yawns and you believe that person is bored with your message.A second person looks away from you and you conclude that person is no t listening to you.A third person smiles(perhaps because of a memory of a joke he heard recently) and you believe that he is attracted to you.We are continually picking up meanings from others’ behaviors a nd we are constantly providing behaviors that have communicative valu e for them.

More often than not,you may have hurt someone accidentally and you m ay have tried to explain that you did not mean that. You may have tol d the other person that you were sorry for your statement. You may ha ve made a joke out of your rude statement.Nonetheless, your comment remains both in the mind of the other person and in your own mind.Yo u cannot go back in time and erase your messages to others.Communica tion cannot be reversed(倒退),nor can it be repeated. When you tried to re—create the atmosphere, the conversation, and the setting, noth ing seemed right.Your second experience with a similar setting and p erson made far different results.

第五部分

The mouse is a most effective device used by people to communicate wi th a computer.

For most people, it’s almost impossible to operate a computer withou t a mouse, let alone surf the Internet. A well-chosen mouse is really handy, flexible and convenient in controlling the screen. With the f unctions of inserting, deleting, moving and copying, it enables us to edit test, browse web page and download what we want. It can even br ing us a flood of music, movies and PC games. Just imagine, all this can be done with a cute mouse.

A convenient tool can certainly make our work easier, but it doesn’t always help in a positive way. Too much ready information on our fingertips leaves little room for knowledge pursuing. Internet companies’ control of data gives them enormous power. So they have a “God’s eye view” of activities in their own markets and beyond. This nature of data makes the antitrust measures of the past less useful. Breaking up firms like Google into five small ones would not stop remaking
