Most people feel lonely sometimes, but it usually only lasts between a few minutes and a few hours. This kind of loneliness is not serious. In fact, it is quite normal. For some people, though, loneliness can last for years. Now researchers say there are three different types of loneliness.

The first kind of loneliness is temporary. This is the most common type. It usually disappears quickly and does not require any special attention. The second kind, situational loneliness, is a natural result of a particular situation —for example, family problem, the death of a loved one, or moving to a new place. Although this kind of loneliness can cause physical problems, such as headaches and sleeplessness, it usually does not last for more than a year.

The third kind of loneliness is the most severe. Unlike the second type, habitual loneliness usually lasts more than two years and has no specific cause. People who experience habitual loneliness have problems socializing and becoming close to others. Unfortunately, many chronically lonely people think there is little or nothing they can do to improve their condition.

Psychologists agree that one important factor in loneliness is a person’s social contacts, e.g. friends, family members, co-workers, etc. We depend on various people for different reasons. For instance, our families give us emotional support, our parents and teachers give us guidance, and our friends share similar interests and activities. However, psychologists have found that, though lonely people may have many social contacts, they sometimes feel they should have more. They question their popularity.

Psychologists are trying to find ways to help habitually lonely people for two reasons: they are unhappy and unable to socialize and there is a connection between habitual loneliness and serious illness such as heart disease. While temporary and situational loneliness can be a normal, healthy part of life, habitual loneliness can be a sad and sometimes dangerous condition.

24. How would you treat temporary loneliness according to the passage?

A. Talk to friends.

Anyone who is afraid of failure and afraid to face challenges will never taste success, so said our professor in marketing. I laughed it off at that time, but got frightened when it actually happened in my life.

I landed in a small city in the Middle East to set up a firm, a world-class car rental firm. Having decided on the project, I earnestly settled in preparation. With a positive mind, I told myself nothing should stop me now, and was more than keen to make it a success.

However, the least expected thing happened. Iraq invaded Kuwait. Tension ran high in the region. Eventually the war broke out, and many people fled the country, leaving my firm in deep trouble.

As usual, “things become difficult, and every effort seems to bring disappointment, it can be tempting to lower your expectations or even water down you r goals and ambitions.” I was no exception. I thought of running away. I remembered the words of Thomas Edison, “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to succeed when they gave up.”

I decided to hang on, telling myself, “I am not afraid of challenges and obstacles.” I stayed on through months of uncertainty and insecurity. Finances ran low, and banks could not wait to get their dues (应缴款). To add to all this, the banks even threatened to take all my vehicles. I felt I made a wrong decision to move there. I was now ready to face failure.

I was living against all hopes, believing that something good would happen. After 2 months the war ended. My persistence paid off: people started flooding back and the car bookings picked up, five times over.

Success comes to the one who dares, even after failure, to think positively and look forward confidently. After all, it is only the experience that makes a man tough. Failure does not mean you will never make it. It means that it will take a little longer. It provides us with a learning experience.

A. Indifferent (漠不关心的)

B. Nervous

C. Calm

D. Unconfident

30. What does the underlined phrase “water down” in the 4th paragraph probab ly mean?

A. strengthen

B. focus on

C. make less forceful

D. improve on

31. The author’s purpose of writing the passage is most likely to __________.

A. persuade

B. inform

C. describe

D. entertain

D

As a public school superintendent (督导), I believe the best way to prepare students for colleges and careers is to focus on providing instructional programs and opportunities that help them become good thinkers. To do this, teachers and actually everyone else in a community, should play a role as a “cognitive coach”to students, helping develop good thinkers among our youth.

The best way for you to become a cognitive (认知的) coach is to seek out and engage school children and adolescents in meaningful conversations. The objective here is to get kids talking about what they think, how they feel, and what they believe whenever and wherever you may find them. It may be in a classroom. It may be at the grocery store. It may be at a basketball game. It doesn’t matter where as long as you engage students in a topical conversation and, hopefully, even a debate. Mainly, you want to encourage students to voice their opinion about things. Get them to take a position on “this thing, or that thing” and ask them to support their position with evidence. Curiously enough, the simple process of engaging students in real life conversations and debates will serve to strengthen what they have learned in the classroom, and help them create their own knowledge about a subject or a topic.

Learning indicates that a student has been exposed to material, understands the material, and can recall the information. Knowledge, on the other hand, goes beyond recall and includes information processing, application to other situations, consideration of meaning, and contrasting with other concepts. Naturally, the topic of conversation you engage in with one of your learners will differ from student to student, and in the level of complexity based on child’s age and developmental level. Even a kindergartener has an opinion about things that are going on in his or her life. Engaging in conversation with any members of your learning community in ways that get at what they have learned and what they know will help them develop higher order reasoning skills.

A student’s synthetic thinking (综合思维) process occurs when a respected adult asks a question, particularly a question that requires reflection. I think all adults in a community have a responsibility to help children with this process, with the goal of producing independent thinkers.

32. According to the writer, what most helps develop students’ thinking?

A. Enlarging one’s knowledge.

B. Learning from respected adults.

C. Making evidence-based arguments.

D. Attending instructional programs.

33. Which is the best question raised by a cognitive coach?

A. What have you learnt recently?

B. How do you like this basketball team?

C. Will you pay by the credit card?

D. Where are you going this weekend?

34. The writer mentions a kindergartener in Paragraph 3 in order to __________.

A. emphasize the importance of being a good thinker

B. suggest that education should start at an early age

C. prove that even children have their own ways of thinking

D. explain the necessity of choosing proper conversation topics

35. What is the main purpose of the passage?

A. To state an education idea.

B. To assess a teaching strategy.

C. To introduce a learning method.

D. To compare different education methods.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

How to Be Creative

Most of us think that creativity is a quality belonging only to artists, writers, or dancers, rather than ourselves. 36 The following tips are a great beginning for developing our creativity.

1. Get out of your comfort zone

We eagerly accept the familiar and fear the unknown. Break out of your usual patterns and welcome creativity into your life. As stated earlier, the human brain was designed to recognize patterns. 37 In fact, our comfort zone is nothing more than a collection of patterns. As we become more efficient at recognizing and using patterns, we rely less on creativity to find new paths. We should force ourselves out of our comfort zones and open up new possibilities.

2. Try different things

If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got. We are creatures of habits and routines, and creativity hates routines. If you usually drive to work, take the subway for a few days. 38 Interrupt your routine, experiment and try something new. New things are often creative, but the same old thing never is.

3. 39

Having a great idea is not enough, you must work to make it a reality. Have you ever seen a new product and realized that you thought of the same thing long ago? Yet someone else is making money with “your” idea. 40 The difference between a dreamer and a doer is action. Do whatever it takes to bring your ideas to life. If you can put them into practice, you are well on your way to improving your creativity in all areas of your life.

A. Take action

B. Seek several options

C. Think from the other person’s point of view.

D. If you normally eat in the office, have lunch under a tree.

E. The truth is that we are all born with the capacity to be creative.

F. We continue to create patterns and routines for almost everything we do.

G. We all have great ideas sometimes, but only a few people turn their ideas into reality. 第三部分英语知识运用(共两节,每小题1.5分,满分45分)

书面表达

Life is full of choices, and to live is to choose.

It was not until last year when I was asked to decide on arts or science that I came to

realize the importance of making choices. My caring parents suggested I go in for science for a promising future career. Having assessed my strengths and weaknesses, I myself, however, was determined to take up arts instead since history and English were what interested me most. For the first time ever, I have followed my heart and enjoyed everything all along.

I pride myself on making the choice on my own, which brings me a sense of fulfillment and dignity. Definitely, it’s also a milestone moment for me to think for myself and learn to be responsible for my own future.

All the different systems of your body are in a constant state of activity, 24 hours a day. You are hardly aware of most of this activity. For example, your heart pumps about 2000 gallons of blood each day. It beats about 100000 times a day. You breathe about 23000 times a day. Your brain is the busiest of all your body parts. No other part of the body functions without first sending a message to the brain. On an average day, the brain receives and acts on more than a million messages from different parts of the body. On the outside of the body, things are happening, too. Your hair is growing. Your skin is changing, and your cells are dying and growing back. All of this goes on very slowly and quietly. You seldom notice these changes. Now you know why you are so tired at the end of the day! Make sure to get your rest each night. Your busy body needs it.

To be honest, I have the same experience as you. But you have to know that procrastination is the thief of time. The following advice may help you overcome it soon. The most effective means to solve this problem is that you can make a “to do” list. For example, you can write “Finish home work before Saturday night”on your plan. If you manage to finish it, you can reward yourself. Otherwise, punish yourself. What’s more, you can find a person to remind you to finish your work efficiently from time to time. Different people have different efficient times. But it doesn’t matter what time it is. Just don’t waste time, following the schedule strictly. Last but not the least, do it now, just from now. 2021届高三下学期二月份月考试卷 英语试卷 (含答案)

2021届高三下学期二月份月考试卷 英语试卷 一、 We smile because we are happy, and we frown because we are sad.Recent studies suggest that our emotions are driven by their related facial expressions. This February psychologists at the University of Cardiff in Wales found that people whose ability to frown is lessened by botox injections(肉毒杆菌注射)are happier,on average, than people who can frown. The researchers administered an anxiety and depression questionnaire to 25females,half of whom had received botox injections to stop frowning. The botox injected people reported feeling happier and less anxious in general. In a related study from March, scientists at the Technical University of Munich found that the botox subjects had much lower activity in the brain circuits(回路)involved in emotional processing and responses—in the amygdala, hypothalamus and other parts of the brain—as compared with controls who had not received treatment. The concept works the opposite way, too.People who frown during an unpleasant procedure report feeling more pain than those who do not, according to a study published in May2008in the Journal of Pain.Researchers applied heat to the forearms of29participants,who were asked to either make unhappy, neutral or relaxed faces during the procedure. Those who exhibited negative expressions reported being in more pain than the other two groups. No one yet knows why our facial expressions influence our emotions as they seem to.The associations in our mind between how we feel and how we react may be so strong that our expressions simply end up strengthen our emotions—there may be no evolutionary reason for the connection. 1.What can we know about the result of the study from Paragraph2? A.The ability to frown should be stopped by injection. B.Less frowns make people happier. C.Women love to frown and feel sad. D.Half women have no ability to feel happy. 2.What did scientists do in the related studies?
