For Chinese, it’s a time for dragon boat racing and Zongzi(粽子). But across the Yellow Sea, South Korea, wrestling(摔跤)and swing play are the highlights. However, both events go by the same name---the Dragon Boat Festival---which falls on May5 of the lunar calendar.

One festival, two cultures: does one nation have the right to call its own? It has been reported that South Korea will apply(申请)to the United Nations Educational, Social and Cultural Organization(UNESCO联合国教科文组织)to make the celebration its cultural heritage(文化遗产). If successful, people from other countries may see the Dragon Festival as a Korean creation.

As the birthplace of the yearly event more than 2,000 years ago, China is not happy with the situation. “It would be a shame if another country successfully made a traditional Chinese festival part of its own cultural heritage ahead of China,” said Zhou Heping, deputy culture minister. The Ministry of Culture is even thinking of making its own application to UNESCO, covering all traditional Chinese festivals, including the Dragon Boat event.

Over the years, the Dragon Boat Festival has spread throughout the world. In Japan and Viet Nam, as well as South Korea, the festival has mixed with and become part of local culture.

With this in mind, some experts say that it is meaningless to argue about which country the festival belongs to. “No one can deny that it came from China,” said

Long Haiqing, an expert from Hunan Province. “But if all the countries involved can protect culture heritage together, they will all benefit.”

24. The underlined word “highlights” can be probably replaced by ““.

A. most exciting events

B. highest lights on the building

C. brightest lights at night

D. most famous festivals

25. It can be inferred that South Korea .

A. has proclaimed(宣布)the Dragon Boat Festival as a part of its cultural heritage

B. has the exactly same Dragon Boat Festival as China

C. has no idea that China has such a festival

D. is paying more attention to its cultural heritage than China

26. China is not happy with the situation because .

A. it created the festival

B. it is also making an application

C. South Korea has no right to call the festival its own

D. UNESCO may approve(批准)South Korea’s application

27. If South Korea’s application to UNESCO is successful, .

A. China will also make its own application to UNESCO

B. it will be meaningless to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival

C. people from other parts of the world will think South Korea created the festival

D. the Dragon Boat Festival will become part of local culture

C

One morning, I stepped out of bed and put my feet on the floor. Suddenly, a mean little man jumped out from under the bed and stabbed (刺,扎) an ice pick (碎冰锥) through my left foot.

Figuratively (比喻地) speaking, yes.

I took another step and he stabbed it again. This went on all day. Step, stab, scream. Over the next few days, I started limping (跛行). My whole body hurt. Even my hair.

I kept thinking that the little man would get tired of stabbing me and go pick on somebody else. We often take things for granted until we lose them or they start to hurt.

My brother deals with pain every day. He’s also blind and suffers from cerebral palsy (脑瘫), needs a walker to walk, doesn’t take much for granted. I had to wonder: What would he think about my foot?

Finally, after a week of pain, I went to see a very nice foot doctor. The doctor studied my foot, took X-rays, shook his head, and said the little man’s name: Arthur Itis, or Arthritis (关节炎).

I knew it well. I’d often heard it hissed angrily by my grandparents and parents, all attacked by Arthur’s ice p ick when they got older.

“Wait,” I said. “Doesn’t Arthur usually just pick on old people?”

The doctor smiled, looking at my chart. “How old are you?”

I gave him a look. “Never mind,” I said. “Can you fix it?”

“Well,” he said, “we can try.”

He listed several options and I chose the injection (打针). It didn’t hurt much. Not half as much as the ice pick.

That was yesterday. This morning, I awoke, took a few careful steps and … hallelujah! It hurt just a bit, but no ice pick. I looked under the bed. No sign of Arthur. Maybe he was hiding in the closet, waiting for another day. But for now, he was gone, and I was grateful. My mind began to race with plans to do all the things I’d been putting off for days: unpack, clean the house, wash my hair …

Then it hit me. An other stab. Not in my foot. In my heart. I remembered that I hadn’t called my brother in a long time.

It’s easy to take some things for granted. But it should never be the people we love.

28. Why didn’t the author go to see the doctor for the first week?

A. Because she was afraid that her brother would laugh at her.

B. Because she thought it was too cold to step out of her room.

C. Because she expected that the pain would gradually disappear.

D. Because she believed that she could endure the pain like her brother did.

29. Who had a disease that was different from the other people mentioned?

A. The author.

B. The author’s brother.

C. The author’s parents.

D. The

author’s grandparents.

30. After having the injection, the author’s _______.

A. felt regretful because it hurt so much

B. was first satisfied with her recovery

C. felt better but could still feel the “ice pick” pain

D. was busy with housework that had been delayed for days

31. From her experience of arthritis, the author learned that _______.

A. a stabbing pain in the heart is as painful as one in the foot

B. people who help us relieve pain should be thanked properly

C. we should always remember to show our love to those we love

D. we should never take for granted the pain we experience in life

D

If you think about World Heritage Sites, you probably think of places connected with ancient art and culture, historical buildings and monuments. And of course, many of these are on the World Heritage List (WHL)(世界遗产名录). But the WHL contains a lot of si tes that are not so obvious. Let’s look at a few of them.

Citadel of Haiti

These monuments were built at the end of the nineteenth century when Haiti(海地)became independent and the many thousands of black slaves in Haiti were free for the first time. These ex-slaves built the monuments, which the WHL describes as “a universal symbol of liberty”.

Robben Island in South Africa

This island was used through the centuries as a prison, a hospital and a military base. But it’s probably most famous as a maximum-security prison for political prisoners in the twentieth century. Nelson Mandela was one of its most famous residents. The WHL says it represents “the triumph of democracy and freedom over oppression and racism”.

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway in India

This railway was opened in 1881 and is still operating today. It crosses a difficult area of mountain landscape and it is a great example of railway engineering. The

WHL says that it is “the first, and still the most outstanding example of a hill passenger rail way”.

Borders of France and Spain

This is an area of great natural beauty and the mountains have many interesting geological formations. But it is also an area of small farms. People there still use a type of agriculture that used to be common in mountainous areas of Europe but has almost completely disappeared in modern times.

The city of Brasilia, Brazil

Brasilia is a capital city that was created from nothing in 1956. The WHL calls it “a landmark in the history of town planning”. The different areas of t he city and the buildings themselves were all designed at the same time carefully. Every part of the city shows the ideas of the planer and architect.

Alto Douro, Portugal

This is an area in the North of Portugal where wine has been produced for thousands of years. The WHL says that this long tradition of winemaking “has produced a cultural landscape of outstanding beauty that reflects its technological, social and economic evolution”.

Rio Platano Reserve, Honduras

The WHL says that this site is “one of the few remains of a humid tropical forest in Central America”. It’s a mountainous area on the Caribbean coast with many different species of plants and animals. The people who have always lived there still have the same traditional lifestyle.

Simien National Park, Ethiopia

Simien National Park was one of the first sites to be listed in 1978. It is one of the highest mountain areas in Africa, and the WHL calls it “one of the most spectacular landscapes in the world”. It is also important for its wildlife. The population of some rare animals is getting smaller and smaller.

32. The passage mainly talks about .

A. the remains of ancient cultures on the WHL

B. the household heritage sites on the WHL

C. some of the more unusual sites on the WHL

D. places of artistic or cultural importance

33. Which of the following sites were listed in WHL for political symbol?

A. Simien National Park and Rio Platano Reserve.

B. Alto Douro and the city of Brasilia.

C. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway and Borders of France and Spain.

D. Citadel of Haiti and Robben Island.

34. Which of the following sites was listed in WHL for the wonderful plan of buildings?

A. Robben Island in South Africa

B. The city of Brasilia, Brazil.

C. Rio Platano Reserve, Honduras.

D. Simien National Park, Ethiopia

35. From the passage we can infer that the WHL lists places .

A. only concerned with ancient monuments and buildings

B. only concerned with technology, natural beauty, wildlife and traditional ways of life

C. not only concerned with ancient monuments and buildings, but with technology, natural beauty, wildlife and traditional ways of life

D. neither concerned with ancient monuments and buildings nor with technology, natural beauty, wildlife and traditional ways of life.

We brought to our classroom worn-out clothes, pieces of cardboard and empty plastic bottles, and turned those into dolls, handbags, issue boxes and small vases. That weekend, we went to a nearby neighborhood and gave them away to the people there. All were very happy with those unexpected gifts, especially little kids and elderly people. We did so well that we were invited to share our idea and experience with all the students of our school.

We are very proud of ourselves and believe we can do more for a better world.

Twenty-one years later I am still a bright-eyed dreamer and one with quite a different story to tell. My grandma, an amazing woman, graduated from college at the age of 65. She was the first in our family to reach that goal. But one year after I started college, she developed cancer. I made the choice to leave college to care for her. It meant that school and my personal dream would have to wait. Then I got married with another dream: building my family with a mix of adopted(收养)and biological children. In 1999, we adopted our first son. To put eyes on him was wonderful and very emotional. A year later came our second adopted boy. Then followed son No.3. In 2003, I gave birth to another boy. You can imagine how fully occupied I became, raising four boys under the age of 8. Our home was a complete zoo—a joyous zoo. Not surprising, I never did make it back to college full-time. But I never gave upon the dream either. I had only one choice: to find a way. That meant taking as few as one class each term. The hardest part was feeling sorry about the time I spent away from the boys. They often wanted me to stay home with them. There certainly were times I wanted to give up, but I knew I should set an example for them to follow through the rest of their lives.

故A、C、D错误,B正确. 故选B 5.如图所示,A、B两物体的质量分别为m和2m,中间用轻弹簧相连,水平面光滑,在水平推力F作用下,A、B两物体一起以加速度a向右做匀加速直线运动.当突然撤去推力F的瞬间,A、B两物体的加速度大小分别为() A.0,a B.a,2a C.2a,a D.0,2a 【解答】解:撤去推力F前,根据牛顿第二定律得:

In Tokyo there are always too many people in the places where I want to be. Of course there are too many cars. The Japanese drive very fast when they can. But in Tokyo they often spend a long time in traffic jams. Tokyo is not different when one wants to walk. At certain times of the day there are a lot of people on foot in London's Oxford Street. But the streets near Ginza in Tokyo always have a lot of people on foot, and sometimes it is really difficult to walk. People are very polite; there are just too many of them. The worst time to be in the street is at 11:30 at night. That is when the night-clubs are closing and everybody wants to go home. There are 35,000 night-clubs in Tokyo, and you do not often see one that is empty. Most people travel to and from work by train. Tokyo people buy six million train tickets every day. At most stations, trains arrive every two or three minutes, but at certain hours there do not seem to be enough trains. Although they are usually crowded, Japanese trains are very good. They always leave and arrive on time. On a London train you would see everybody reading a newspaper. In Tokyo trains everybody in a seat seems to be asleep, whether his journey is long or short. In Tokyo, I stood outside the station for five minutes. Three fire-engines raced past on the way to one of the many fires that Tokyo has every day. Tokyo has so many surprises that none of them can really surprise me now. Instead, I am surprised at myself: I must go there next year on business. I know I hate the overcrowded city. But I feel like a man who is returning to his long-lost love. 21. Tokyo is different from London in that ____________.
