(中考·河北)

Here is a story: A man sees a butterfly (蝴蝶). The butterfly tries to get out of its chrysalis (蛹). Feeling sorry for it, the man decides to help. He cuts the chrysalis and the butterfly comes out easily. Surprisingly enough, the butterfly is unable to fly. If the butterfly doesn't struggle (挣扎;奋斗) to leave the chrysalis, it can't fly! The struggle develops the energy in the butterfly which makes it fly. Similarly, the challenges of life bring out the best in young people and make them fly.

When people are young, meeting and overcoming challenges will make them strong and ready to face life. When we look at successful people, we see that the most successful of them are people who have had to struggle. One famous businessman, who now owns many big supermarkets, used to carry clothes on his back and sell them from door to door when he was young. Another successful man is

Dennis. His father died when he was only twenty. His father's death forced him to mature fast. He had to bring up a family of nine people. He took up the challenges and overcame them. Today his brothers and sisters are leading successful lives.

Sometimes challenges do not appear to us because we keep away from them. So some parents and teachers actively encourage young people to face challenges. They might organize some activities for young people which provide them with challenges, like rock-climbing, camping, volunteer work and so on. However, just passing exams will not prepare a person for life. We must meet and overcome challenges. The young people of today will become the leaders of tomorrow. For countries to continue to become successful, it is important that the young people learn to meet challenges and overcome them.

Children with no shoes on do better at school than those with shoes on, a study suggests.

“The last place a child would sit to read is an upright chair. And we've found that 95% of them really don't read on a chair at home, ” Heppel added, “When they go on holidays, they read lying down.”

(中考·丽水)

Think of a simple object — a piece of chalk, for example. Are you remembering its name, its shape, its color or its size? Are you remembering what it is used for, or the sound it makes when the teacher writes on the blackboard? Scientists say that memory includes different parts of the brain, such as language and the ability of sense. They believe that you begin to create a memory when you notice something with your senses. Then messages are sent to different brain cells, which join together to form connections. A new connection goes into your short-term memory. It is stored there for about 30 seconds, and then it is either lost or stored in your long-term memory.

Having a good memory means making lots of connections and storing them in your long-term memory. To do this, you need to keep your brain in good shape. Eat plenty of brain food such as fish oil, fruit and vegetables. Laughter also makes your brain more active. Also, don't forget to exercise. So do some sports or just move around a lot in the house. Finally, get plenty of sleep. This will make your memories grow stronger.

When you want to remember new information, you must pay special attention. Use your senses—sight, smell, hearing and touch—and keep repeating the information. To do well in your exams this year, turn off the TV, silence your mobile, and review your work regularly. To remember something special, use your imagination to create visual (视觉的) connections. For example, you need to take a pencil, an eraser, your ID card and chips to your next exam. Imagine the ID card as the body

of an animal, the pencil its long neck, and the eraser its head. Your animal is hungry, so now imagine it eating a bag of chips. It may sound crazy, but it's fun and it works. Another way is to do something different to your room. Turn a picture upside-down, or tie a sock around the door handle to remind (提醒) yourself of something to remember!

16.At the beginning, the writer gives an example to ________.

A. lead in the topic of the article

B. show the importance of chalk

C. let readers remember the word

D. make readers know his favorite

17.How many ways are mentioned to have a good memory in Paragraph 2?

A. 2.

B. 3.

C. 4.

D. 5.

18.The main idea of the third paragraph is ________.

A. how to do well in exams

B. how to remember new information

C. why to review our work

D. what to eat to make memories stronger

19.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Memory has nothing to do with languages.

B. Laughter can help to improve our memory.

C. A picture of eating chips is the most useful.

D. Our brain is different to keep in good shape.

(中考·武汉)

The Silk Road is the name of different roads that long ago connected Europe, Africa and Asia. People reached these different places along these roads. Scientists believe people began to travel the Silk Road about 3,000 years ago. By the time the Chinese silk trade became important in the world, the Silk Road covered almost 6,500 kilometers. It went from Rome to China, which is from the West to the Far East.

Merchants travelled along the Silk Road to carry silk, of course. They also carried and traded other things like spices (香料), cloth, jewels and gold.

Along and around these ancient paths (小路), have come many fascinating and mysterious stories.

It is said that Roman soldiers who lost a war travelled through central Asia. They decided to live somewhere near the ancient Chinese villages. Some of these Romans married local Chinese women and the legend of the blond-haired, blue-eyed tribes of China was started.

Some historians believe that the people of Kashmir were taken away from their country Israel. They were prisoners (俘虏) of war about 2,800 years ago. People say that these people travelled along the Silk Road. They kept their Jewish way of life for a long time.

During its busiest period, the Silk Road allowed people from many different cultures and countries to meet each other and mix. The Silk Road allowed the sharing of valuable things and new ideas. It included people and trading goods from different areas. All these peoples travelled the Silk Road, and they shared goods, stories, languages, and cultures.

In modern times, the old Silk Road routes (路线) are still used, but now they are crossed by trains instead of camels and horses. There is even a Silk Route Museum in Jiuquan in China. “We're sorry for our bad work,” the Old Town of Lijiang government wrote on its Sina Weibo account. “We are open to tourists' suggestions, and will make things right.”

If the three spots don't correct themselves in six months, the National Tourism Administration
