Justices of the Peace receive no payment.Their reward is in the interest inherent in the work they do,in the sense of performing a public service and exercising power, and in the prestige attached to their position. They are not expected to have any specific qualifications other than soundness of character, nor any legal training or experience, though some courses are provided which they are obliged to follow, after being appointed. They are advised on points of law by their Clerk, who is a professional lawyer, but in deciding on punishments they do what seems best to them, though they are always expected to be guided by common sense, humanity and a recognition that all courts ought,as far as is practicable,to impose similar penalties in similar circumstances. When a court sits it must have at least two justices on it,and not more than seven.Justices take turns at attending to sit on the bench at their courts.

The American’s attitude toward authority, rules, and regulations was the despair of bureaucrats and disciplinarians.Nowhere did he differ more sharply from his English cousins than in his attitude toward rules, for where the Englishman regarded the observance of a rule as a positive pleasure,to the American a rule was at once an insult and a challenge. His schools were almost without discipline, yet they were not on the whole disorderly, and the young girls and spinsters who taught them were rarely embarrassed. This absence of discipline in the schools reflected absence of discipline in the home.Parents were known to be indulgent of their children and children were known to be disrespectful of parents, yet family life was on the whole happy, and most children grew up to be good parents and good citizens. It seemed entirely natural that during the Civil War privates should elect their officers and that the greatest of the generals should so often see his plans miscarried because he hesitated to give firm orders to his subordinates or to insist upon obedience. If Lincoln did not pardon quite so many sleeping sentinels as folklore relates,it was

characteristic that folklore should celebrate as a virtue a gesture so disruptive to all discipline.

The1950s produced a new ideal family type, the nuclear family consisting of a husband, wife, and their dependent children living in a home of their own.The defining characteristic of the nuclear family is independence.Parents or other relatives may visit or even move in temporarily, but they are expected to act like guests and not“interfere”.In times of need the nuclear family turns to professionals (doctors, police, bankers)as well as to relatives.Young people are sent to school and old people to“homes”.Typically, the husband is considered responsible for supporting the family, even if the wife works. He goes off each day to work for a corporation or some branch of government, not a family-owned enterprise.Typically, the wife, who is considered responsible for the family’s social and emotional well-being,stays home at least while the children are small. The couple—particularly the wife—has sole responsibility for their children.(Grandparents and other relatives takes over only as a favor or in emergencies.)But the children are expected to leave home and start families of their own in their twenties. What careers they pursue, where they live, and who they marry are up to them.

School-age children of employed mothers seem to have two advantages over children of homemakers. They tend to live in more structured homes, with clear-cut

rules giving them more household responsibilities;and they are encouraged to be more independent.Achievement of independence seems to be especially good for girls, helping them to become more competent,to achieve more in school, and to have higher self-esteem;but it may put pressure on some boys.

Findings for boys are less clear-cut and more varied by social class. For example, boys in both single-parent and two parent lower-income families seem to benefit when their mothers work;these boys achieve more in school. They are probably benefiting from the family’s higher income.Sons of middle-class working mothers, however, have done less well in school than have the sons of homemakers. However, the data for this study were collected in the1960s and1970s,when opportunities for women and options for child care were not as broad as they are today. As society adjusts to the fact that now the typical mother is a working mother, there should be fewer negative effects on boys.

Children do complain that they have too little time with their working mothers. And many mothers are concerned about the difficulties of finding competent day care and after-school care for younger children and of supervising older ones, especially when the children care for themselves part of the day.Time-related problems are not, of course,as severe for women who work part-time or have flexible hours.

There are at least three aspects of dying:the biological, the social, and the psychological, all of which have become increasingly controversial.

The legal definition of biological death varies from state to state, but in general, biological death is considered the cessation of bodily processes.A person may be pronounced dead when the heart stops beating for a significant period of time or when electrical activity in the brain stops. The criteria for death have become more complex with the development of medical apparatus that can prolong the basic signs of life indefinitely.People in a deep coma can be kept alive for years, even though they may have suffered irreversible brain damage and may never regain https://www.wendangku.net/doc/7a4522589.html,ter in this chapter we will discuss the issue of whether or when such life supports as respirators and feeding tubes may be withheld or removed.

The social aspect of death revolves around funeral and mourning rituals and legal arrangements for the inheritance of power and wealth.A major problem in present-day American society is a lack of widely-accepted conventions of behavior for people who know they are dying, for those around them, and for the survivors after the death of a loved one.Several conventions which do exist are rarely helpful either for dying people or for those close to them:isolating the dying in hospitals or nursing homes, refusing to discuss their condition with them, separating from them before death by visiting less often, and thus leaving them to cope with death alone.

The psychological aspect of death involves the way people feel both about their own death as it draws near and about the death of those close to them. Most people today have a great deal of trouble coming to terms with the meaning of death. We need a more positive acceptance of the reality of death as a natural and expected phase of life.

Most nations of the world export goods to other countries.Like-wise,most import goods from other nations. Why do countries of the world engage in international trade?

Some nations of the world have certain conditions or resources that provide them with a basis for international trade Columbia and Brazil have just the right climate for growing coffee. They export the surplus to earn foreign exchange to pay for the goods they import.

If a country has an abundance of natural resources,it is common for it to export some of these resources.Rubber from Malaysia and oil from some of the Middle East countries are examples.

If a nation is advanced in science and technology,it can produce sophisticated machinery and equipment, such as computers, jet airplanes and electric generators. Their manufactured goods are usually sold at high prices in international market. So

they enjoy favorable conditions in international trade.

In addition to trade in goods, there is another form of trade,i.e.trade in service. The former is called visible trade, and the latter, invisible trade.Transportation, insurance, financing and tourism are some of the forms of invisible trade.Invisible trade can be as important to some nations as the export of goods is to others.

Ⅳ.Reading Comprehension(阅读理解)

1.

The history of English is conventionally,if perhaps too neatly, divided into three periods usually called Old(or Anglo-Saxon)English,Middle English, and Modern English. The earliest period begins with the migration of certain Germanic tribes from the continent to Britain in the fifth century A.D.,though no records of their language survive from before the seventh century, and it continues until the end of the seventh century or a bit later.By that time Latin,Old Norse(the language of the Viking invaders),and especially the Anglo-Norman French of the dominant class after the Norman Conquest in1066had begun to have a substantial impact on the vocabulary, and the well-developed inflectional system that typifies the grammar of Old English had begun to break down.

The period of Middle English extends roughly from the twelfth century through the fifteenth. The influence of French(and Latin, often by way of French) upon the vocabulary continued throughout this period, the loss of some inflections and the reduction of others accelerated, and many changes took place within the grammatical systems of the language.A typical prose passage, especially one from the later part of the period, will not have such a foreign look to us as the prose of Old English, but is will not be mistaken for contemporary writing either.

The period of Modern English extends from the sixteenth century to our own day.The early part of this period saw the completion of a revolution in vowel distribution that had begun in late Middle English and that effectively brought the language to something resembling its present pattern.Other important early

developments include the stabilizing effect on spelling of the printing press and the beginning of the direct influence of Latin, and,to a lesser extent,Greek on the https://www.wendangku.net/doc/7a4522589.html,ter,as English came into contact with other cultures around the world and distinctive dialects of English developed in the many areas which Britain had colonized, numerous other languages made small but interesting contributions to our word-stock.

The Unwanted Box That Made Millions

For a long time Chester Carlson carried around his little black box----the invention over which he had worked and struggled for years. He showed it to the directors of twenty-one large American corporations, such as“General Electric, International Business Machines(IBM),Lockheed, and RCA.”

Nobody wanted it.

Nobody wanted to invest a penny in it.

It must be painful for those directors to think of Chester Carlson now.For the little black box is the heart of the multi-billion-dollar Xerox Corporation.Carlson is the inventor of“xerography”(from two Greek words meaning“dry writing”),the dry-printing process used in thousands and thousands of offices, businesses, industries, universities, shops, and government agencies around the world.

Thanks to Carlson,it now takes minutes to copy a document which, twenty years ago, would have kept a secretary busy for a whole day.And for a few pennies anyone can have a copy of anything from cooking recipes to Greek poetry.More than thirty billion such copies are made each year.

When Chester Carlson went to work in a patent office in1930,the copying methods were slow, dirty, and expensive. In his job,Carlson had to make many copies of patents for inventions. One night, after working late and painfully,he decided that

somebody had better find an easier way to do it.He went to work in the kitchen of his apartment with measuring cups and cooking pots.By1937,having developed a simple form of xerography,he applied for his first patent on the process.

Then began Carlson’s famous unsuccessful search for investors.Only in1044 did the Battelle Memorial Institute of Columbus,Ohio, agree to spend$3,000for research on Carlson’s invention.According to the agreement,Carlson was to receive 25percent of all profits;his share would rise to40percent if he could repay Battelle the$3,000within five years. This part of the agreement later brought millions of dollars to Carlson who,by borrowing from his family, had managed to repay his debt in time.

Even with Battelle’s help,it took another year to find a company willing to buy Carlson’s process.In1945,Dr.John H.Dessauer, director of research of the Haloid Company(maker of copying machines),decided to adopt and market the process, which was then named“Xerox.”Three years later, the Haloid Company had changed its own name to become the Xerox Corporation. It is now the thirty-ninth largest corporation in the US,with sales of over four billion dollars a year.

Is It Better to Buy or Rent? The price of housing has kept increasing in recent years, which causes a big headache for people living in cities. A lot of people cannot afford to own a real estate property, so they choose to rent instead of buying an apartment. This group of people does not want to bear burden of mortgage so that they opt for a practical solution. Renting an apartment makes them have a place to stay and thus they can focus on work as well as personal life. Some other people, however, believe that an apartment owned by themselves makes them feel safe and relieved, so they are willing to sacrifice some other aspects of life to borrow money from the bank to buy an apartment. As far as I am concerned, to buy or to rent is all about it will be better to rent first and wait for the good timing when the price is going down to buy. Topic 2: On Job Hopping It seems that nowadays, very few young people are willing to stay in a job position for long, let alone for the whole life. They change jobs constantly. This results from several factors. Firstly, young people like fresh things, and it is easy for them to be fed up with old routine work. So when they stay in a position for a while, the excitement will fade out. They are quite realistic and not willing to waste time in a job they are not interested in. Thirdly, some young people are not satisfied with current salary, believing they deserve better pay. In my opinion, constant job hopping will not benefit young people in their career development. Every job has its own merits and young people can certainly learn something from it as long as they are patient and wise enough. Every job experience is valuable down the career path and young people shall be able to make the most of it. Topic 3: Online Social Network Modern people will be no stranger to online social network. Facebook, Renren and Kaixin001 are probably the most populous networks among Chinese netizen. In these networks, people interact with each other, be it a stranger or a friend, and have a lot of fun in the virtual world. This phenomenon could be a result of the fast development of the Internet and people's great interest of the virtual world. I think it is a very good new platform for people to keep in touch. But it should not be overused. Firstly, some people are addicted to it, which makes them want to get online 24 hours a day. When people spend too much time on one thing, they will naturally have not enough time for study and for work. Secondly, online social network change people's behavior of interacting with others. In virtual world, you just click the mouse and type in words instead of having a face-to-face talk. This will not benefit people's long term friendship, and even harm their interpersonal relationships in real world.
