The meaning of silence varies among cultural groups. Silences may be thoughtful, or they may be empty when a person has nothing to say. A silence in a conversation may also show stubbornness, or worry. Silence may be viewed by some cultural groups as extremely uncomfortable; therefore attempts may be made to fill every gap(间隙)with conversation. Persons in other cultural groups value silence and view it as necessary for understanding a person's needs.

Many Native Americans value silence and feel it is a basic part of communicating among people, just as some traditional Chinese and Thai persons do. Therefore, when a person from one of these cultures is speaking and suddenly stops, what maybe implied(暗示) is that the person wants the listener to consider what has been said before continuing. In these cultures, silence is a call for reflection.

Other cultures may use silence in other ways, particularly when dealing with conflicts among people or in relationships of people with different amounts of power. For example, Russian, French, and Spanish persons may use silence to show agreement between parties about the topic udner discussion. However, Mexicans may use silence when instructions are given by a person in authority rather than be rude to that person by arguing with him or her. In still another use, persons in Asian cultures may view silence as a sign of respect, particularly to an elder or a person in authority.

Nurses and other care-geivers need to be aware of the possible meanings of silence when they come across the personal anxiety their patients may be expericencing. Nurses should recognize their own personal and cultural construction of silence so that a patient’s silence is not interrupted too early or allowed to go on unnecessarily. A nurse who understands the healing(治愈) value of silence can use this understanding to assist in the care of patients from their own and from other cultures.

68. What does the author say about silence in conversations?

D. It is content-based.

69. Which of the following people might regard silence as a call for careful thought?

B. The French.

C. The Mexicans.

D. The Russians.

A. Let it continue as the patient pleases.

B. Break it while treating patients.

C. Evaluate its harm to patients.

D. Make use of its healing effects.

71. What may be the best title for the text?

A. Sound and Silence

Section C(8%)

Directions: Complete the following passage by using the sentences given below. Eachsentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.

As you grow older, you’ll be faced with some challenging decisions. Some don’t have a clear right or wrong answer——like should you play soccer or field hockey. 72

Making decisions on your own is hard enough, but when other people get involved and try to pressure you one way or another it can be even harder. People who are your age, like your classmates, are called peers. When they try to influence how you act, to get you to do something, it’s called peer pressure.

Peers can have a positive influence on each other. You might admire a friend who is always a good sportsman and try to be more like him or her. 73 For example, a few kids in school might try to get you to cut class with them.

Some kids give in to peer pressure because they want to be liked, to fit in, or because they worry that other kids may make fun of them if they don’t go along with the group. The idea that “everyone’s doing it” may influence some kids to leave their better judgments or their common senses behind

74 Paying attention to your own feelings and beliefs about what is right and wrong can help you know the right thing to do.

Even if you are faced with peer pressure while you are alone, you can simply stay away from peers who pressure you to do stuff you know is wrong,

If you continue to face peer pressure and you’re finding it difficult to handle, talk to someone you trust. 75 .
