Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi for a living. It was a cowboy’s life, a life for someone who wanted no boss.

I received a call one night from the quiet part of town. And when I arrived at 2:30 a.m., the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window.

Unless a situation smelled of danger, I always went to the door. This passenger might be someone who needed a helping hand, I reasoned to myself. So I walked to the door and knocked.

“Just a minute,” answered a n elderly voice.

I could hear something being dragged across the floor. After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman

32 her 80s stood before me. She was dressed like somebody out of a 1940’s movie.

By her side was a small suitcase. The apartment looked 33 no one had lived in it for years. All the furniture was covered with sheets. There were no clocks on the walls. In the corner was a cardboard box filled with photos and glassware.

“Would you carry my bag out to the car?” she said.

I took the suitcase to the taxi, then returned to help the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly toward my taxi. She kept thanking me for my 34 .

“It’s nothing,” I told her. “I just try to t reat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated.”

“Oh, you’re such a good boy,” she said.

When we got in the taxi, she gave me an address, then asked, “Could you drive through downtown?”

“It’s not the shortest way,” I answered quickly.

“Oh, I don’t mind,” she said. “I’m in no hurry. I’m on my way to a hospice(临终关怀医院). I don’t have any family left,” she continued. “The doctor says I don’t have very long.”

I quietly 35 over and shut off the meter(计价器). “What route would you like me to take?” I asked.

For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked. We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived.

She had me pull up in front of a gym where she had gone dancing as a girl. Sometimes she’d ask me to slow in front of a building or corner and would sit 36 into the darkness, saying nothing.

As the sky turned bright, she suddenly said, “I’m tired. Let’s go now.”

We drove in silence to the address she had given me. Two people came out to the cab as soon as we pulled up. They must have been 37 her.

I opened the trunk and took the small suitcase to the door. The woman was already seated in a wheelchair.

“How much do I owe(欠)you?” she asked, reached into her purse.

“Nothing,” I said.

“You have to 38 ,” she answered.

“There are other passengers,” I said.

Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto me 39 .

“You gave an old woman a little moment of joy,” she said. “Thank you, Dear.”

I squeezed her hand, then walked into the dim morning light. Behind me, a door shut. It was the sound of the 40 of a life.

I didn’t pick up any more passengers that night. I drove aimlessly, lost in thought. For the rest of that day, I could hardly talk. What if that woman had gotten an angry driver, or one who was impatient? What if I had refused to take the round and driven away?

On a quick review, I don’t think that I have done very many more important things in my life. We’re likely to think that our lives center on great moments. But great moments often catch us unaware (未察觉的) –beautifully wrapped in what others may consider 41 ones.

“In every person’s life there needs to be a caring, nurturing, encouraging friend.”

The earliest memory I have of my father is one of me as a young boy holding his hand by his two last fingers as we walked together. His hands seemed so large that his fingers were all I could actually hold. He always took me with him to ball games even 42 my young age. I will never forget that.

As I grew older I remember dad and I listening to high school basketball games together on an old radio. I would make a list of player’s names on a piece of paper and keep record of how many points each would score as the game went on. Too small to stay awake for the whole game, I always fell asleep 43 the game ended. When I would wake up in the morning I would find the score sheet 44 next to me. The score sheet would be filled out with the final score on it completed by my father before he carried me to bed.

My father was a bread delivery man. I remember the times when my father would 45 the house in the early morning on those cold days when I was home from school over Christmas break. I used to ride on the floor of that bread truck as he delivered the bread to the stores. I don’t know if those old trucks even had heaters but it didn’t matter. The smell and warmth from the bread that had just come from the bakery ovens w ould make my mouth 46 and keep me warm both at the same time.

In high school I became very interested in athletics. My father would 47 all my games. My junior year something special happened.

Football season was long over. We had done well last season. We marched through the season undefeated and stepped into the playoffs(决赛).

That night before the playoff game my father came to me and 48 announced that he would not be able to attend the game. He had to deliver the bread to the stores and the site of the game was over a three hour drive from his route. He vowed to listen to every play on the radio.

The next day as I lined up for the second half kickoff(开始)I 49 to look up and noticed a blue and white bread truck pulling into the parking lot. Dad had delivered the bread and driven over three hours to see the second half of the game.

Years later I had become a teacher and coach. One day I was on the school playground watching a first grade recess(课间休息)when a little boy walked up to me. As I looked down at him he reached up and grabbed my hand by my last two fingers – just like I used to do to my dad. In that moment my father came back to me and I 50 that even though my father was gone – he had left me something behind. He had left me his smile. He had left me his compassion. He had left me his heart. When that little boy touched my hand I realized that all these wonderful gifts that I had loved so much about my father could be passed on to others. In that moment I understood the meaning of the word heritage(遗产).

I now spend my days passing on that heritage to my 8-year-old stepson and 3-year-old son; a heritage not only about fathers, sons and sports. A heritage filled with 51 .

My husband’s life sounds like a “James Bond” movie.

He was born in Romania(罗马尼亚), but his family sent him to study in Italy. Before he left, his mother told him, “As long as I write in pencil, don’t come back. When I write to you in pen, it’s safe to return.” She never wrote in pen.

So, like the boy in Vittorio De Sica’s film The Bicycle Thief, he lived a poor life in Italy. He applied to go to America, but there was a quota(指标)and he was refused. He was accepted by Canada, though, and from there he took a train to San Francisco. There he stayed illegally(非法). He became a U.S. citizen when we married. By then he was a charming European with a continental accent(大陆口音)and the manners of a prince (王子).

Seven years, a U.S. passport, and two children later, he felt it was safe to visit Romania. He hadn’t seen his mother, two sisters, and two brothers since he was 16.

We flew to Munich, Germany; picked up a car of Volkswagen we had bought in the States; and drove to Romania via Austria and Hungary(匈牙利). When we reached, his family was waiting outside his sister’s house to greet us. After lengthy hugging, kissing, and crying, his family also embraced(拥抱)me, the American wife with two young children.

The afternoon sun shone brightly on the white sands of the beach. A father and his young son running happily across the sand.

My father died a month ago. He’d been as healthy as anyone could see a 38-year-old man to be. He’d gone to sleep one night and just never got up in the morning.

My father always had a ready smile and a kind word. When I was little, he’d take me fishing or to the park. We were close then. I wanted to grow up to be just like Dad. Then things began to change. I could never find time to do things with him any more. We used to argue a lot and I know it was I who usually started it.

Dad tried to talk to me, but it was hard on both of us. I was embarrassed by him. He had never learned to read and dropped out of school to take a job in a car mending shop. Then he started to act strangely. He’d stay up late at night, and when I saw him the next morning there would be dark circles around his eyes. One night I found out why.

It was cold, so I decided to get another blanket to warm up my bed. The kitchen light was still on and I went to turn it off. Looking around the corner, I saw my father at the kitchen table, with a book in front of him and a pen in his hand. He was talking slowly and quietly. After a while I recognized the words as Dr. Seuss’s “Cat in the Hat”. I bought the book when I wa s little and had asked my father to read it to me. I remember how his face turned red as he handed it back to me and said, “Sorry, son.” Now, as I heard the words coming from him, I was surprised.

I never said my discovery but I began to have more respect for my father. I often asked him for advice and spent more time with him. The three words were on the tip of my tongue, but I still could not tell him I loved him.

At his funeral, I didn’t cry. Later I cried for hours, alone. As I stood on the beach wher e we once played, a heavy sadness hung in my heart. I wondered if his life would have been happier, if I had said those three words to tell him--- I loved him.

Most people follow others blindly just under the effect of peer(同龄人)pressure or because they feel it safe to follow a large number of people. In some rare cases it might be right to follow the crowd, but in most cases this can be a big mistake. A ctually there are reasons why we shouldn’t follow the crowd blindly.

According to a study, people often follow the crowd when they aren’t sure about the direction they should take. This means a large number of people could be following others without under standing what’s right and what’s wrong! This makes more people follow and as a result most people move in a certain direction even if it isn’t right.

A man who wants to be successful always hopes for others’guidance and he usually follows the same path of most people, but the question this man never asks himself is: are all of those people successful? Of course not! If you want to follow a crowd, then follow a successful one. However, in real life you’ll only find one successful person among hundreds of people, and that’s why following the crowd makes no sense at all.

Most people act emotionally without thinking wisely. If you always follow others because they’re greater than you in number, then sooner or later you’ll discover that you’re taking emotional de cisions you might regret later.

However, should we never follow the crowd? No. I’m not trying to say you should never follow the crowd, but instead I’m just asking you to think wisely before you take a decision. If you find others are right, there is no pr oblem in following them, but if you have doubts about the direction they’re moving in,don’t follow them blindly.

58. What do many people who want to succeed do before making a decision?

A. Ask people to guide them.

B. Follow a successful man.

C. Sum up the mistakes they have made.

D. Think carefully about the direction they are heading in.

59. What is right according to the article?

A. It takes time to think wisely.

B. It is wrong to follow other people.

C. You shouldn’t be sorry for what you have done.

D. You should think wisely before following others.

60. What is the main idea the writer tells us in this article?

A. Don’t follow others blindly.

B. Effects of following others.

C. Advantages of following others.

D. Disadvantages of following others.

C2

I stopped to watch my little girl busy playing in her room. In one hand was a plastic phone; in the other a toy broom(扫帚). I listened as she was speaking to her make-believe little friend. And I’ll never forget the words she said, even though it was pretend.

She said, “Suzie’s in the corner because she’s not been very good. She didn’t listen to a word I said or do the things she should.” In the corner I saw her baby doll all dressed in lace and pink. It was obvious(明显的)she’d been put there to sit alo ne and think.

My daughter continued her “conversation”, as I sat down on the floor. She said, “I’m all fed up, I just don’t know what to do with her anymore? She whines(哼唧)whenever I have to work and wants to play games, too. She never lets me do the things that I just have to do? She tries to help me with the dishes, but her arms just cannot reach... And she doesn’t know how to fold towels(毛巾). I don’t have the time to teach. I have a lot of work to do and a big house to keep clean. I don’t have the time t o sit and play - don’t you know what I mean?”

And that day I thought a lot about making some changes in my life; As I listened to her innocent words that cut me like a knife. I hadn’t been paying enough attention to what I hold most dear. I’d been caught u p in responsibilities that increased throughout the year.

But now my attitude has changed, because, in my heart, I realize... I’ve seen the world in a different light through my little darling’s eyes. So, let the cobweb(蜘蛛网)shave the corners and the dust bunnies rule the floor, I’m not going to worry about keeping up with them anymore.

I’m going to fill the house with memories of a child and her mother... For we are granted only one childhood, and we will never get another.

61. What was the little girl doing with her doll?

A. She was dressing up her doll.

B. She was playing the doll with her friend Suzie.

C. She was talking to her mother.

D. She was punishing her doll.

62. How did the mother feel when she heard the “conversation”?

A. Worried.

B. Regretful.

C. Disappointed.

D. Sad.

63. What can we learn from this article?

A. The mother shouldn’t blame her daughter.

B. The mother should pay attention to her daughter’s words.

C. The mother shouldn’t carry responsibilities that many.

D. The mother should spend enough time with her daughter.

In 1804 Carl Maria von Weber was a 17-year-old composer and singer

with little conducting experience. He was invited to lead the theater orchestra

in Breslau, and accepted the position in part because he hoped that its modest

salary would enable him to support his father, an unsuccessful engraver(印刷

工人). He tried to bring in new musicians and new repertory(剧目), but at

every turn he met refusal. Then, in the midst of this series of temporary

professional setbacks, Weber suffered a personal disaster that would last a lifetime.

One evening early in 1806 Weber asked a friend, Friedrich Wilhelm Berner, to come to his home to go over the score of an opera. Weber was writing. Berner agreed but was delayed until long after Weber had gotten home.

Arriving home, Weber was thirsty and seeing a wine bottle, he picked it up and took a long drink. But the fluid in the bottle was not wine. It was acid(酸)- an etching(腐蚀)solution Weber’s father had carelessly poured into a wine bottle.

It was late by the time Berner arrived, but seeing a light in the window, he knocked on the door. When there was no reply, Berner tried the door and found it unlocked. Entering the dark room, he smelled a something sharp. Then he tripped over a b ody. It was Weber. Berner cried out and Weber’s father, in a nightshirt, came running from the next room. They called doctors but Weber’s mouth and throat were badly burned and it was a long time before he could even explain what had happened. He was sick for two months and, when he recovered, his beautiful singing voice had been forever burned away.

When he finally returned to the theater Weber found that all of his reforms(改革)had been turned down and, fearing that he would be blamed for the worsening performances to follow, he left Breslau. But years later he would take some comfort from words that he had written before accepting the post: “Nothing harms(伤害)me which affords me experience.”

64. When Web was young, his father worked as ________.

A. composer

B. singer

C. conductor

D. engraver

C. Web’s reforms were turned down because of the ac cident.

D. Web could never perform as a singer since the accident.

66. What does the underlined sentence mean?

A. Nothing can harm me because I have a lot of experience.

B. It is useful for me to get experience from harmful things.

The Secrets of Happiness

Most people want to be happy, but few know how to find happiness. Money and success alone do not bring lasting happiness. Happiness depends on ourselves. In other words, we make our own happiness. Here are a few suggestions to help you be happier.

67 Too often, we spend so much time thinking about the future – for example, getting into college or getting a good job – that we fail to enjoy the present. You should enjoy life ’s simple pleasures, such as reading a good book, listening to your favorite music, or spending time with close friends. 68

Another secret to leading a happy life is to be active and have hobbies where you forget your problems. Many people experience this dancing or playing a sport, such as skating or soccer. 69

Finally, many people find happiness in helping others. According to studies, people feel good when they volunteer their time to help others. 70 You can help a friend with his or her lessons, go shopping to buy food for your family members, or simply help out around the house by washing the dishes.

A.

The second secret of happiness is to do more exercise.

B. If you want to feel happier, do something nice for someone.

C. The first secret of happiness is to enjoy the simple things in life.

D. People who have several close friends live happier and healthier lives.

E. You can forget about your problems, and only think about the activity.

Doctor Seuss was born in 1904. By the middle 1950s, he had become one of the

best-loved and most successful children’s book writers in the world. H is books are very

popular with young readers. They enjoy the invented words and the pictures of unusual funny

In 1954, life magazine published a report about school children who could not read. The

report said many children’s books were not interesting. Doctor Seuss strongly hoped to help children and decided to write books that were interesting and easy to read. Their parents loved it, too. Today it is still one of the stories they like best. The success of The Cat in the Hat made him want to write more books for children. In 1960, he wrote a book using less than fifty words. The book is called Green Eggs and Ham .

In 1984, Doctor Seuss won a Pulitzer Prize (普利策奖). He was honored for the education and enjoyment

his books provided American children and their parents.

He died at the age of 87, but his influence remains. Millions of his books have been sold worldwide. People say his books helped change the way American children learned to read.
