作文考题是关于High speed rail (HSR),题干大意是有人认为HSR好,有人认为不好。要求作者分析一下优势,表明自己的观点。

参考范文(字数多了点,大家酌情删减即可):

The past years witnessed the birth and boom of high-speed rails in this country. As we know, such lines as Wuhan-Guangzhou and Zhengzhou-Xi’an have already been completed and put into operation. While most people are amazed at the speed and comfort of travelling by high-speed trains and are proud of the nation’s achievement in the field of traffic and transportation, some put forth negative views. They claim that it is much more expensive than travelling by ordinary trains and is less fast than travelling by plane. Therefore, they assert that it is a waste of resources to construct high-speed rails.

Personally, I believe that the advantages of the high-speed train definitely outweigh its disadvantages and we should invest more into its development.

In the first place, it consumes much less time to travel by high-speed trains than by other means of transportation. It is known that a high-speed train can run at as high a speed as 250 to 300 kilometers per hour, which is much faster than that of an auto or ordinary train. Though it is not as fast as the plane, it is still time-saving if we take into account the time we spend on the way to the airport and waiting for boarding. This is especially true when it comes to short-distance or medium-distance trip.

In the second place, the high-speed train has its obvious advantage in terms of cargo transportation. The development of Chinese economy puts tremendous demands on the rapid flow of raw materials and commodities. While conventional trains and trucks are not fast enough, planes are doubtlessly limited in transportation capacity. Therefore, high-speed trains turn out to be a better choice.

Thirdly, the operation of the high-speed train is less affected by the weather. Ice and snow can be more easily got rid of on the rail than on the highway or the track or the airport. Besides, it can also run in case of heavy fogs, which autos and planes cannot do.

Last but not least, the high-speed train is more environment-friendly than other means of transportation. Considering the tons of fossil fuels consumed by planes, cars and trucks, the high-speed train is definitely a better choice for a low-carbon economy.

To sum up, the high-speed train is indeed advantageous. Though it is a bit more expensive than ordinary trains, cars or trucks, the time saved by it is considerable. We are glad to see that China is more advanced in other countries in this field and we have reasons to believe that a nationwide network of high-speed rails will be built in the foreseeable future and contribute to the rejuvenation of this nation.

Is English Language Teaching Overemphasized in Chinese Education?

A college graduate presents a series of certificates including CET4,

6 and high scores in TOEFL, GRE, to the job interviewer of a famous international company. The interviewer put them away and ordered him to describe in written form a case that he successfully persuades his director to follow his advice within 200 Chinese characters. Of course the applicant fails with several other candidates.

This case reveals a stunning fact that English language teaching has been given so much priority that the education of mother tongue is ignored and backslid. You can graduate even you don’t get the certificate showing your Chinese language level, as a matter of fact, no certificate of this kind. But you can not hope to graduate without the certificate of CET 4. English is given to much emphasis, I feel.

There are many reasons account for this phenomenon. The most important one is that English has unnecessarily become a compulsory course in the schools of China. From kindergarten, primary school to post graduation schools of universities, you have to study English and past one test after another, the more you fail, the more you feel headache about it. The hard-to-pass English exams take up too much time for a student in her study.

Another reason for overemphasized English is that we misbelieve that a good command of English is the prerequisite for a talent. A technological genius may not be promoted to an engineer because of he does not pass the occupational English test. A doctoral candidate may

lose opportunity to become a doctor in science because of his Poor scores in English entrance exams.

But on the other hand, no one pays attention to the proper use of our mother tongue- Chinese, which words are intentionally misused and characters randomly compounded with department concerned shows no sign of enforcing laws against such activities. Ridiculously, Chinese language has become so popular outside China and there are few qualified Chinese language teachers to meet the demand.

Taking all the factors mentioned above into consideration, I feel the education of our mother tongue should enjoy the same priority as English.

“We Should No Longer Force Gong Li and Zhang Yimou to Take Part in National Politics”. Celebrities shouldn’t take part in National Politics

The colors of spring in Beijing are not just red, yellow and green. They are diversified by the splendid costumes of ethnic minorities, together with unique presence of entertainers taking part in politic congress.

Zhang Yimou and Gongli, perhaps you remember the names just from their movies, but now you may find the new title given to them: the

representatives of people’s congress. It is reported from media that they stops the movie they are shooting and fly directly to Beijing to join this big event. Hearing this, we may suspect their motivation behind it: do they really want to put forward suggestions on peoples’ livelihood so eagerly or simply live up to the titles given?

As far as I am concerned, I strongly oppose entertainers, or celebrities entering political field. The reasons are simple:

To begin with, entertainers, especially well known elite or Dawan you may call them, do not have the consciousness of caring for the livelihood of poor people in their minds. What they really want is how to run their own business, for example, making the next “blockbuster” or receive an invitation to develop a commercial which can bring back huge profits

Moreover, celebrities take advantage of media. The National People’s Congress attracts media from every corner of the globe to report and celebrities naturally do not want to lose this opportunity to expose themselves. Maybe they want to show their deep concern to state affairs but sometimes they even don’t understand the procedures of the congress and knows who is who on the stage.

Furthermore, celebrities belong to so-called upper class. Their speeches are felt by common people as irrelevant, superficial and pretentious.

Judging from above-mentioned factors, we can find celebrities are not suitable to act as the representatives of people’s congress. People would rather see their excellent performance in theaters than meet them at the entrance of People’s Congress Hall.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

参考范文

There is no denying the fact that traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a hotly debated topic in China today. Some hold that it should be eliminated from the Chinese medical care system. They argue that TCM is "unscientific" at best and "pseudo-science" at worst.

However, I suspect that the people who wave "science" as a weapon against TCM themselves have limited ideas of what the word "science" really is, even though they have received a good science education. The word "science" originates in Latin, meaning producing knowledge. By definition, there should be no argument about TCM, since generations of TCM practitioners over centuries have accumulated rich experiences and made TCM a knowledge and a science that hundreds of millions still seek for curing diseases and improving health.

The opponents of TCM are right in their argument that TCM is not an "exact science," like chemistry or physics, and they have good reasons to tell people that TCM may not cure all and that herbal TCM concoctions some folk doctors prescribe may not be as effective as proclaimed. But they forget that Western medicine, too, does not cure all, and that over the past few decades, many "scientifically"-approved drugs are banned as a result of serious side effects.

To sum up, despite all the unknowns and malpractices associated with TCM, I don't believe it is scientific to eliminate centuries' old knowledge, which helped sustain the livelihood of us Chinese in the past and still plays an important part in improving our quality of life.

Recently, a newspaper carried an article entitled: “We Should No Longer Force Gong Li and Zhang Yimou to Take Part in National Politics”. The article argued that some artists and film stars are unwilling or unqualified to represent the people in the People's Congress or the People's Political Consultative Conference, and they should not be forced, to do so. What do you think?

Recently, an article carried by a newspaper argued that some artists and film stars, like Gong Li and Zhang Yimou, are unwilling or unqualified to represent the people in the People's Congress or the People's Political Consultative Conference, and they should not be forced, to do so. This article really said what I wanted to.

There seems to be a prevailing tendency in this country that any figure successful in a professional field is worth a political position and must be provided with it. Taking a look around, we can find examples too numerous to list. Apart from Gong Li and Zhang Yimou, we can think of Guo Moruo the famous writer and poet, Cai Zhenhua the well-known ping pong player and coach, Feng Gong the reputable actor, and so on.

Do they really possess the ability to lead or to represent the people? It is quite doubtable. They may excel in their professional realm, but they may not be competent at political positions. As to those stars, they definitely belong to the minority of people rather than the masses. What’s worse, many of them loathe being a leader or a representative. Forcing artists or scientists to take part in national politics may also risk hindering their further development in their own professions.

In view of what has been discussed above, it imperative for us to reconsider the running system of the People's Congress or the People's Political Consultative Conference. They should be made to represent the masses of people.
