The race to 5G is on. All four major US carriers now have some form of 5G wireless, although it’s all limited roll-outs in only a few cities, mostly using expensive phones that won’t support future nationwide 5G networks.

W e’re tracking the roll-outs monthly on our Race to 5G page.

The early 5G roll-outs are more like a public test than a final product. AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile are all using technologies that only travel about 800 feet from a cell site, which means there isn’t much coverage. All four carriers are waiting for upgrades(升级)to their base stations that will improve coverage, speed, and reliability.

Around the end of this year or the beginning of 2020, A T&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile all intend to launch 5G networks that use the existing 4G spectrum(频谱), which will have slower speeds but broader coverage.

We’ve tested AT&T in Dallas and Las Vegas Sprint in Dallas and New York; Verizon in Chicago, New York, and Providence; and T-Mobile in New York. Every month, we’ve been seeing better performance and more new devices. It’s messy. It’s very early days. And if you like new technology, it’s very exciting.

In previous mobile transformations, we’ve seen most of the big changes happening years after the first announcement. Take 4G, for instance. The first 4G phones in the US appeared in 2010. But the sorts of 4G applications that changed our world didn’t appear until later. So following that plan. While we’re getting a little bit of 5G right now, you should expect the big 5G applications to crop up around 2021 or 2022.

5G stands for fifth-generation-cellular(蜂窝状的)wireless, and the initial standards of it were set at the end of 2017. But a set of standards doesn’t mean that all 5G will work the same-or that we even know what applications 5G will enable. There will be slow but responsive 5G, and fast 5G with limited coverage.

8. What is the present state of 5G in the US?

A. Initial exploration.

B. Great improvement.

C. Wide application.

D. Extensive promotion.

9. Why does the author take 4G for example?

A. To persuade carriers to give up 5G.

B. To remind people of 4G’s importance.

C. To prove 5G takes time to make a greater difference.

D. To show 5G has failed to meet expectations.

10. What’s the author’s attitude to 5G?

A. Cautious.

B. Skeptical.

C. Opposed.

D. Objective.

11. What’s the best title for the text?

A. Race to 5G

B. 5G is coming

C. How fast is 5G?

D. What is 5G?

A 9. C 10. D 11. B

All four major US carriers now have some form of 5G wireless, although it’s all limited roll-outs in only a few cities, mostly using expensive phones that won’t support future nationwide 5G networks.(所有四大美国运输公司现在都有某种形式的5G无线,尽管仅在少数几个城市有限推广,主要使用不支持未来全国范围的5G网络的昂贵的手机,)可推断,美国目前5G的现状还在初步探索阶段。故选A。

In previous mobile transformations, we’ve seen most of the big changes happening years after the first announcement.(在以前的移动转换中,我们已经看到大部分的大变化发生在第一次发布之后的几年)接下来以4G为例说明这个观点,美国第一批4g手机出现在2010年,但改变我们世界的4g应用程序直到后来才出现。

There will be slow but responsive 5G, and fast 5G with limited coverage.

The race to 5G is on.(5G时代开始了)和第二段的The early 5G roll-outs are more like a public test than a final product.(早期的5g推出更像是一个公共测试,而不是最终产品。) There will be slow but responsive 5G, and fast 5G with limited coverage.(5G缓慢但反应灵敏,快速,覆盖有限。)

Universities have finally promised to end grade inflation(膨胀)after a growing number of first-class degrees led to accusations of dumbing down. The percentage of firsts handed out has doubled in the last decade, with 24 percent of graduates now awarded the top grade, compared with 12 percent in 2008.

Universities UK(UUK)is today promising for the first time to handle the problem and check the endless rise in the number of firsts dealt out.

Education Secretary Damian Hinds welcomed the move and warned any university producing an unreasonable rise in top degrees will face intervention(介入)from the regulator Office for Students. He said artificial grade inflation ust be stopped and warned quality must not be cast aside to build up an institution's reputation.

As part of a package of measures, universities have agreed to follow a new framework specifying what a student must demonstrate(展示)to achieve a certain grade. They have promised to ensure the standards will stretch and challenge all students, and protect the value of qualifications.

It comes after UUK admitted for the first time in November that tutors may be under pressure from both students and their bosses to inflate degree results.Staff may be tempted(诱惑)to hand out more top marks because they fear bad reviews in student feedback surveys,it said, while institutions could be motivated to do so to improve their position in national rankings.

Critics have long warned the trend weakens employers confidence in the system,as they cannot pick out outstanding candidates to hire.

A UUK investigation discovered 43 percent of first-class degrees last year were likely to have been awarded due to factors such as grade inflation.

Professor Dame Janet Beer, president of UUK,said,"The UK higher education sector has a world- leading reputation,so it is critical to protect the value of a university degree." UUK's promise will be in place for the

2019-2020 academic year.

D. More accessible.

13. Why do universities plan to end grade inflation?

A. To toughen students up.

B. To rebuild their reputation.

C. To restore employers' confidence.

D. To maintain their competitiveness.

14. What does the president of UUK think of the move?

15. What can be a suitable title for the text?

C 13. D 14. B 15. A

根据第一段中“The percentage of firsts handed out has doubled in the last decade, with 24 percent of graduates now awarded the top grade, compared with 12 percent in 2008.”

根据第六段“Critics have long warned the trend weakens employers' confidence in the system, as they cannot pick out outstanding candidates to hire.” 再根据最后一段中的“The UK higher education sector has a world-leading reputation,so it is critical to protect the value of a university degree.”

根据最后一段中的“The UK higher education sector has a world-leading reputation, so it is critical to protect the value of a university degree.”

本文在开篇“Universities have finally promised to end grade inflation(膨胀)after a growing number of first-class degrees led to accusations of dumbing down.” 故选A。

根据第六段“Critics have long warned the trend weakens employers' confidence in the system, as they cannot pick out outstanding candidates to hire.” 再根据最后一段中的“The UK higher education sector has a world-leading reputation,so it is critical to protect the value of a university degree.”

43. why 44. addition

45. be eaten

46. healthily

48. the 49. depending

50. scientific

Peter S?

When Peter S?

nger and Liang Wu got together

故填against 。

故填be eaten 。

此处考查 have sth. to do “有某物用来做……”结构,to do 不定式作sth. 故填to breathe 。

故填the 。

【点睛】当分词做状语的时候,如果构成分词的动词与句子的主语构成主动关系,就使用现在分词做状语;

4.carrying→carry

5.next前添加the

6.Beside→Besides

7.photo→photos

8.greater→great

9.especial→especially

10.tried→trying

故that改为which。

故go改为went。

故去掉of。

表示“不得不做某事”短语为have to do sth.。故carrying改为carry。

短语为from one…to the next。

改为great。

Sweat pours down my face and into my eyes. My heart races as I face my body to finish each movement. As I near the end of the exercise, I feel extremely tired, but a smile is of my face. It’s not a smile because the DVD is over, but a smile of success from pushing my body to its extreme limit. Some people enjoy shopping, smoking, food, work, or even chocolate. But I need exercise to get through each day. Some shake heads when they see me run through the town. Others get hurt when I refuse to try just one bite o f their grandmother’s chocolate cake. They raise their eyebrows, surprised by my “no thank you,” or by my choice to have a salad. Over the years, I have learned it’s okay to just say “no.” I shouldn’t feel sorry for refusing food that I don’t want to eat. So what drives me to roll out of bed at 5:00 a.m.? What gives me the reason to just say no to ice cream? Commitment. A commitment to change my life with a way that reduces daily anxiety, increases self –confidence and energy, extends life and above all improve my body shape.

A In 1812, the year Charles Dickens was born, there were 66 novels published in Britain. People had been writing novels for a century—most experts date the first novel to Robinson Crusoe in 1719— but nobody wanted to do it professionally. The steam-powered printing press was still in its early stages; the literacy(识字) rate in England was under 50%. Many works of fiction appeared without the names of the authors, often with something like “By a lady.”Novels, for the most part, were looked upon as silly, immoral, or just plain bad. In 1870, when Dickens died, the world mourned him as its first professional writer and publisher, famous and beloved, who had led an explosion in both the publication of novels and their readership and whose characters — from Oliver Twist to Tiny Tim— were held up as moral touchstones. Today Dickens’ greatness is unchallenged. Removing him from the pantheon(名人堂) of English literature would make about as much sense as the Louvre selling off the Mona Lisa. How did Dickens get to the top For all the feelings readers attach to stories, literature is a numbers game, and the test of time is extremely difficult to pass. Some 60,000 novels were published during the Victorian age, from 1837 to1901; today a casual reader might be able to name a half-dozen of them. It’s partly true that Dickens’ style of writing attracted audiences from all walks of life. It’s partly t hat his writings rode a wave of social, political and scientific progress. But it’s also that he rewrote the culture of literature and put himself at the center. No one will ever know what mix of talent, ambition, energy and luck made Dickens such a singular writer. But as the 200th anniversary of his birth approaches, it is possible —and important for our own culture—to understand how he made himself a lasting one. 21. Which of the following best describes British novels in the 18th century

Here are the garden products to avoid: Cocoa mulch Some gardeners like to use cocoa shell mulch in their gardens but, just like chocolate, cocoa shell mulch contains theobromine (可可碱), which is poisonous to dogs. This means that cocoa shell mulch can be potentially deadly if consumed in large quantities. If you own a dog I’d strongly advise that you avoid using Cocoa mulch in your garden. Compost Despite being an eco-friendly garden feature, compost can be highly dangerous for animal. As organic matter decomposes, it releases mycotoxins (霉菌素), which are poisonous to wildlife. Consumption of mycotoxins can cause panting, vomiting (呕吐), seizures and even death in dogs. If you do use compost in your garden, make sure it is securely fenced off so that your pet cannot access it. Weed killer The chemicals contained in weed killers can be irritants to animals and, in some cases, even poisonous. Some weed killers contain harmful substances, such as borax and arsenic, which can potentially be fatal to pets. If you are unsure whether a weed killer is safe to use in a garden that your pet uses, you should always seek the manufacturer’s advice first, or ask a vet (兽医).
