三、阅读理解(共两节,满分60分)

第一节(共15小题;每小题3分,满分45分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A

As a firefighter in New York, between alarms I used to rush to the company office to read The New York Times. One day, an article caught my eyes, which I took to be a calumny(诽谤)on William Butler Yeats, my favorite poet. And I determined to write a letter to the editor of the Sunday Book Review. I don’t know why I felt it my duty to defend the reputation of the poet, but I just knew that I had to write that letter.

Until that point in my life I had not written much of value — a few poems and short stories. I sent some materials to various magazines but found no one was willing to publish my works. It was a special and unexpected delight, then, when I learned something I’d written would finally be printed. Ironically it wasn’t one of my poems or short stories — it was my letter to The New York Times.

Later, I received a letter from True Magazine and one from The New Yorker, asking for an interview. I also received a phone call from a famous publishing house that asked if I might be interested in writing a book about my life. I had little confidence in my ability to write a whole book, though I thought that my work as a firefighter was a worthy subject. So I wrote a collection of stories of firefighters, and it went on to sell two million copies.

I had found out that the writing was a natural result of the passion I felt. One’s education and experience will guide him toward making a right decision, but his passion will enable him to make a difference in whatever he does.

36. Why did the author write a letter to The New York Times?

A. To publish some articles he wrote in his spare time.

B. To ask for some information about his favorite poet.

C. To express his opinion about the article he read in it.

D. To point out the mistakes made by the editor.

37. We can learn from the text that the author _______.

A. loved reading and writing

B. enjoyed his work as a firefighter

C. wanted to be a famous writer

D. liked to help people in trouble

38. The turning point in the author’s life came when _______.

A. he chose to work as a firefighter

B. his letter to The New York Times was published

C. he began to write some poems and stories

D. his book became a best-seller

39. What can be inferred from the text?

A. Life is full of uncertainties.

B. Passion contributes to one’s success.

C. Experience plays a key role in one’s work.

D. Courage contributes a lot to creative work.

B

The Giant Water Lily is native to Brazil. The flower itself is white and only blooms at night. The flower is nearly the size of a soccer ball. The most interesting thing about this flower is its large leaves. The leaves can grow up to 46 centimeters in size and can hold up to 136 kilograms.

The Giant Water Lily grows in the shallow waters; in its native Brazil and in the Amazon it grows all year long. But it does not grow year round in areas where it is not a native species; it only grows and reproduces in the summertime when the climate is warm. The Giant Water Lily adapts to the environment by growing thorns (刺) on the bottom of the leaves to protect itself from fish and other predators that might want to eat it.

There are two sides to the Giant Water Lily’s effect on the living things. The negative part is that no other plant species can live under the Giant Water Lily due to its size. The water lily’s leaves are massive in size and they cover most of the surface of the water. This means that no sunlight can reach the rest of the water. Therefore no algae (海藻) can grow, and with no food source, animals that feed on algae cannot exist. On the other hand, Giant Water Lilies are very helpful to some species, for example, the Lily Trotter. The Lily Trotters walk on the leaves and obtain their food source (insects) from the water lily.

Now researchers are trying to discover more about the characteristics of this particular species.

40. According to the text, the Giant Water Lily _______.

A. is a rare water plant

B. has very large leaves

C. is shaped like a soccer ball

D. is known for its various colors

41. What does the underlined word “predators” in Paragraph 2 mean?

A. Attackers.

B. Followers.

C. Admirers.

D. Protectors.

42. Other plants can’t live under the Giant Water Lily because _______.

A. there is not enough space for them to live in

B. the water lilies’ leaves have tough thorns

C. there is no sunlight that’s needed for their living

D. some animals lack food source

43. What can be inferred from the text?

A. The Giant Water Lily is favorable to many insects.

B. The Giant Water Lily can provide some species with food.

C. Some insects prevent the growth of other species.

D. Some insects treat the Giant Water Lily as enemies.

44. The text most probably comes from _______.

A. a book about plants

B. a news report about plants

C. a research paper on plants

D. a comic book of science

C

Recently, a couple in New Zealand were forbidden from naming their baby son 4Real. Even though New Zealand has quite liberal (开明的) rules about naming

children, names beginning with a number are not allowed. They decided to call him Superman instead.

In many countries around the world, unusual names for children are becoming more popular, especially since the increasing trend for famous people to give their children special names. In Britain, you can call a child almost anything you like —the only restrictions on parents relate to offensive words.

Some parents choose names which come from popular cultures. For example, there have been six boys named Gandalf after the character in the Lord of the Rings novels and films. Equally, names relating to sports are fairly common — since 1984, 36 children have been called Arsenal after the football team. Other parents like to make up names, or combine names to make their own unique version, a method demonstrated by Jordan, the British model, who recently invented the name Tiáamii for her daughter by combining the names Thea and Amy (the two grandmothers).

In Britain, some names which were previously thought of as old-fashioned have become more popular again, such as Maisie or Ella for a girl, or Alfie or Noah for a boy. But the most popular names are not the wacky ones. The top names are fairly traditional —Jack, Charlie and Thomas for boys and Grace, Ruby and Jessica for girls.

Other countries have much stricter rules when it comes to naming children. Countries including Japan, Denmark, Spain and Germany have an approved list of names from which parents must choose.

45. According to the text, we can know that _______.

A. traditional names are favored by famous people

B. unusual names are becoming more popular in the world

C. naming rules in different countries are nearly the same

D. special names are often made up by common people

46. What do es the underlined word “wacky” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

A. Special and difficult.

B. Funny and stupid.

C. Strange and unusual.

D. Interesting and inspiring.

47. What is the text mainly about?

A. How to give children special names.

B. Unusual names in the world.

C. Naming rules in the world.

D. Strange names and traditional ones.

D

A study found that 25% of Australian women would like to keep an office pet. Sue Chaseling of Petcare Information Service said the practice of keeping office pets was good both for the people and the pets. “On the pets’ side, they are not left on their own and won’t feel lonely and unhappy,” she said. A study of major US companies showed that 73% found office pets beneficial, while 27% experienced a drop in absenteeism (缺勤). Xarni Riggs has two cats walking around her Global Hair Salon in Paddington. “My customers love them. T hey are their favorites,” she said. “They are not troublesome. They know when to go and have a sleep in the sun.” Little black BJ has spent nearly a ll his two years “working” at Punch Gallery in Balmain. Owner Iain Powell said he had had cats at the gallery for 15 years. “BJ often lies in the shop window and people walking past tap on the glas s,” he said. Ms Chaseling said cats were popular in service industries because they enabled a point of conversation. But she said owners had to make sure both their co-workers and the cats were comfortable. 56. A. works in the Global Hair Salon B. often greets the passers-by C. likes to sleep in the sun D. is a two-year-old cat 58. The best title for this text would be ______. A. Pets Help Attract Customers B. Your Favorite Office Pets C. Pets Join the Workforce D. Busy Life for Pets B MONTREAL (Reuters) --- Crossing the US-Canada border to go to church on a Sunday cost a US citizen $10,000 for breaking Washington’s strict new security rules. The expensive trip to church was a surprise for Richard Albert, who lives right on the Canadian border. Like the other half-dozen people of Township 15, crossing the border is a daily occurrence for Albert. The nearby Quebec village of St. Pamphile is where they shop, eat and go to church. There are many such situations in these areas along the largely unguarded 5, 530-mile border between Canada and the US- which in some cases actually runs down the middle of streets or through buildings. As a result, Albert says he did not expect any problems three weeks ago when he returned home to the US after attending church in Canada, as usual. The US customs station in this area is closed on Sundays, so he just drove around the locked gate, as he had done every weekend since the gate appeared last May, following a tightening of border security. Two days later, Albert was told to go to the customs office, where an officer told him he had been caught on camera crossing the border illegally. Ottawa has given out special passes to some 300 US citizens in that area so they can enter the country when Canadian customs stations are closed, but the US stopped a similar program last May. That forces the people to a 200-mile detour along hill roads to get home country through another border checkpoint. Albert has requested that the customs office change their decisions on the fine, but he has not attended a Sunday church since. “I feel like I’m living in a prison,” he said. 59. We learn from the text that Richard Albert is ______. A. an American living in Township 15 B. a Canadian living in a Quebec village
