1. Analysis of the material

This lesson is the first part of Unit1. It mainly deals with a reading. The central topic in this lesson is learning English. After learning it, students can improve their reading skills and have the chances to enhance their language learning competence.

2. Analysis of the students

The students may firstly interest in this topic---learning English online, but have difficulty in selecting the important words or phrases due to their own level of dealing with information. So to improve the skill of dealing with information is necessary and important.

3.Teaching Objectives:

This unit is intended to introduce you to studying by computer. After learning it, Students should be able to

●Understand the main idea (the author’s experiences of learning

English and the way to learn a foreign language by using a computer) and structure of the text in Section A (three parts: Introduction, Body and Conclusion).

●Master a reading skill: Finding out word meanings by using context

clues and word part clues.

●Grasp the key language points and grammatical structures in the texts

in Section A

●Conduct a series of reading,speaking and writing activities.

3. Teaching key points

●To master the useful words and expressions.

●To practise reading with a fast speed.

●To practise the skill of dealing with information.

4. Teaching difficulties

To practise the skills of getting information, analyzing information, processing information and using information.

5. Teaching Procedures

Step I Greetings

Greet the whole class.

Step II Pre-reading Activities

1.Introduce the theme of “learning a foreign language ”by showing students the title of the text.

2. Related questions, which can be asked to students before coming to the text, and then ask students to discussion in a group and answer the questions (oral practice)

②.Do you know what online learning is?

Show students a picture and ask them to describe the online learning process according to the picture.

Reference:

There is no teacher or students in the classroom. They may be at home or anywhere they want. You need a computer, network or Internet for online learning. You can watch videos and listen to audio materials online. There is no neccessity to join a group discussion in the classrooom. You can make it online by using an online camera and a microphone. You can even submit your homework and have a test online.

Step III While- Reading

1. First reading: fast reading

Require them read the passage as fast as they can, then try to catch the main idea of this text.

2. Intensive reading: teacher guides students to read the text intensively by the structure and some language points.

(1) Teacher ask students to read the first paragraph and try to find the

topic sentence.( Learning a foreign language was one of the most difficult yet most rewarding experiences of my life.)

(2) Language points and difficult sentences in the 1st paragraphs.

①. rewarding: give sth. in return for good and valuable doings

②. Although at times, learning a language was frustrating, it was well

worth the effort. (Para.1)

●Meaning: Although sometimes learning a language is disappointing,

it was rewording enough to spend time and effort on it.

●Be well worth sth./doing sth.: be rewording enough for the time

and effort

Eg.This film is well worth seeing.

●frustrating: cause sb. to have feelings of disappointment

(3) Students skim the paragraphs form 2 to 4 and find out the answers to

following questions by working pairs.

Q1: What made the author’s learning in junior middle school very successful?

A: The kind and patient teacher and her positive method of praising

all students often.

Q2. How was the author’s experience with English learning in senior middle school different from his experience in junior middle school?

A: In junior middle school, his English teacher was kind and patient.

He liked to answer questions in class and he made much progress

in English. But, in his senior middle school, his teacher punished those who gave wrong answers. He didn’t want to answer questions any more in class. As a result, he didn’t make much progress in English.

(4) Language points and difficult sentences in the 2nd -4th paragraphs.

①.Because of the positive method, I eagerly answered all the questions

I could, never worrying about making mistakes. (Para.2)

●Meaning: Because of the effective and helpful method, I was very

willing to answer all the questions I could, and I never worried about making mistakes.

●Note: The present participle phrase “never worrying about making

mistakes” functions as an adverbial of reason.

②.Not only did I lose my joy in answering questions, but also I totally

lost my desire to say anything at all in English.(para 3)

●Meaning: I not only didn’t feel happy answering questions, but

also I didn’t want to say anything in English.

●Note: With “not only” or “only” placed at the beginning of a

sentence, the sentence order should be inverted as you find it in the reading passage.

Eg. No only did we enjoy the film ,but we also had had a wonderful time. 我们不仅看了电影,而且玩得很痛快。

③.far from: not… at all; rather than (Para.4)

Far from (being) angry, he’s very happy.

④.a couple of: two or three (Para.4)

⑤.intimidate: frighten by making threats

(5) Ask students to read para 5-7 and answer two questions.

Q1: Judging from the fifth paragraph, what is basic to online English learning?

A: computer, phone line and modem and learning the technology. Q2.What are requires of the online learning?

A: It requires much time, commitment and discipline to keep up with the flow of the course.

(6) Teacher explains the language points in the 5th -7th paragraphs.

①. I soon got access to the necessary equipment, learned the technology

from a friend and participated in virtual classroom 5 to 7 days a week. (para 5)

●Meaning: I soon got the necessary equipment and learning how to use

the equipment from a friend. Then I could take online course 5 to 7 days a week.

●Note: get access to: get the right of using or reaching sth.

that hard work at last.

●Note: reap the benefits of: get sth, as a reward

(7) teacher sums up the main idea of part II(2-7) (The author’s

experiences of learning English and the way to learn English online)and asks students to read para.8 and then answer the following questions Q1.Why wouldn’t the author trade h is experience in learning a foreign language for anything else?

A: Because learning a foreign language taught him the value of hard work and gave him insights into another culture.

Q2: According to the last paragraph, what interests the author most about English?

A: He could communicate with many more people than before.

(8) Teacher explains the language points in the last paragraphs.
