1. M: Oh, how beautiful your backpack is! It must be very expensive.

W: No, only $45. If I bought two, it would cost $40. But one is enough.

2. M: Weekends are very important for you, aren’t they?

W: Yes, after five days’ work, cycling is a good way to relax myself.

Q: What is the woman likely to do at weekends?

3. W: How long will it take this TV set to get to my apartment?

M: Well, it all depends. Let me ask our delivering department to confirm it.

Q: What is most probably the man?

4. M: Cathy, come and have a look at my new cellphone!

W: A new cellphone again? You’re turning our flat into a cellphone museum!

Q. What does the woman imply?

5. W: Look at the bigpeach field. And there is a farm with some beautiful trees around.

M: Yes, we would fail to know the country if we went by air.

Q: Where does the conversation most probably take place?

6. W: Why! You’re reading a Spanish book. I didn’t know you can speak Spanish besides English.

M: I wish I could. I’m just looking at the pictures.

Q: What can we learn from the conversation?

7. W: Paul, you look so pale. What happened?

M: A woman was talking on her cell phone while driving and didn’t see the traffic lights turn red. She nearly killed me!

Q: What is the man complaining about?

8. M: I hear that the school sports meet has been postponed till next month.

W: So far I haven’t been informed of that.

Q: What does the woman mean?

9. W: Spending all your life saving money for a house is too much to bear.

M: Exactly. You couldn’t have said it better.

Section B

Directions: In Section B, you will hear two short passages, and you will be asked three questions on each of the passages. The passages will be read twice, but the questions will be spoken only once. When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard.

Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.

On the day after Christmas in 1966, a small group of Americans in the western city of Los Angeles began a seven-day celebration. The celebration was not religious. Its purpose was to honorblack culture, especially the importance of the family. The celebration is Kwanzaa.

The word Kwanzaa means “first fruits of the harvest.” Today, not only millions of African Americans, but also families in Canada, Britain, France and Africa celebrate it. The main celebration is held for seven days after Christmas from December 26 through January 1. Kwanzaa, however, does not replace Christmas. Most people who celebrate Kwanzaa also celebrate Christmas. Kwanzaa was established as a means to help African Americans reconnect with their African cultural and historical heritage and study African traditions. On each of the seven days of Kwanzaa, family members gather to light a candle in a special candleholder and discuss the seven principles of Kwanzaa. People may also get together for a party and enjoy a holiday meal. They may play some African music. (Now listen again please.)

Questions:

11. What is the passage mainly about?

12. When is Kwanzaa celebrated according to the passage?

13. What can be learned about Kwanzaa from the passage?

Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following report.

SANTIAGO -At least eleven people have been killed and nine more injured in Chile after an earthquake measuring 8.4 on the Richter scale struck Wednesday night, the country’s National Office of Emergencies confirmed Thursday.

The earthquake struck at 19:54 local time, on Sept 16, with the center out at sea, 144 miles away from Santiago, the capital of Chile. The quake, which was followed by a series of aftershocks, was felt throughout the nation as well as in Brazil, Bolivia and Argentina. It caused a low-intensity tsunami that affected the coastal area but did not cause any injuries.

The powerful quake left 3,000 houses damaged. And more than 1 million people withdrew from their homes due to the tsunami alert that happened after the quake. The port suffered serious damage from the tsunami and is currently unusable. Some boats are stranded in the wetlands and others are stuck inland.

“Chileans are used to these misadventures handed to us by nature. We came through it strongly. We are convinced that this is an opportunity to show the heart of the Chilean people,” said the Minister Jorge Burgos. (Now listen again please.)

W: So, have you actually done this -couch surfing?

M: Yes, I’ve done it a couple of times.

W:What about security? I mean are you worried about safety and security with this?
