Do you always focus on studying and earning "A" grades in school?

Most Chinese students work really hard. But in the United States, you might be considered a bookworm if you cannot also socialize (社交)?Socializing is just as important as your grades. If you just study all the time and don't socialize, your life won't be complete. So, how does one socialize with students

in the US?

Lots of high school soccer games are usually held during the fall semester. I didn't know anything about soccer, but I joined in some of the soccer games in order to have fun with my friends. I thought I could learn the rules from others. However, to my surprise, some American students don't even know the rules but still go to the games in order to socialize. They cheer for the soccer players and have fun together. The other common way to socialize is to join after-school clubs. You can choose clubs that you are interested in and make a lot of new friends. For example, one of my friends started a sketch JS) club. I was interested in it and joined the club. I met lots of students there who were interested in sketching. We soon became friends with each other.

As the old saying goes, "A new broom sweeps clean." Donald Trump, the 45th president of the United States, took office on Jan.20, 2017. Soon after that, the new president began using his power to make changes to the country by signing several executive orders (总统行政令).

The orders include the travel ban (禁令)on refugees (难民)and people from seven mainly Muslim countries, like Iraq and Syria. Trump believes this helps keep terrorism (恐怖主义.)out of the US. He also signed an order to build a wall along the southern border (边境),aiming to stop smugglers (走私者)and Mexicans moving to the US illegally (非法地).

Trump pointed out on his Facebook that this is about keeping the US safe. However, many people, both from the US and other countries, are against the orders.

Judges in the US say that Trump's travel ban is unconstitutional (违背宪法的),as it is a kind of discrimination (歧视)against Muslims. And world leaders, groups and businesses including those from the United Nations and European Union are also against or have criticized the ban.

Trump also signed another controversial (有争议的)order about the economy. It seems like technology is everywhere. Computers and smart phones are at the center of almost everything we do. They constantly (持续地)require our attention. We text our friends with them during the day, sleep with them by our beds and check our messages as soon as we wake up.

In the future, technology will no longer be interrupting us all the time. Instead, we will use calm technology which was first developed by the scientist

Mark Weiser in the 1970s. In his opinion, calm technology works quietly but constantly. We know it is there, but we don't pay much attention to it.

According to Mark, the best technology should be invisible!^急形的)and let you live your life.

We already use many different types of calm technology in our everyday lives. Do you have a smoke alarm in your house? That smoke alarm is always there, checking the air for smoke and quietly keeping you safe. It only reminds you it^s there when you^ve burnt your bread! Or there may be lights in your home or school. When somebody passes in front of their sensors (传感器),the lights turn on. You don't think about this type of technology until you see the light go on.

In the future, we can imagine our houses will use calm technology to open the curtains for us in the morning, to turn down the heat when we leave or even to choose the best music for our mood. The minute we walk through the door, our house will respond by turning on the lights and music, and perhaps even starting to prepare our dinner!

36. Which of the following is an example of calm technology?

A. A computer.

B. A smart phone.

C. A smoke alarm.

D. A radio.

37. What does the underlined word "interrupting” mean?

A. Hurting.

B. Protecting.

C. Helping.

D. Troubling.

38. What's the main idea of the third paragraph?

A.Calm technology keeps us safe in many ways.

B.Calm technology can help you to do housework.

C.Calm technology has been used in our daily lives.

D.Calm technology plays an important part in schools.

39. What can we infer from the passage?

A.The light wonl go on unless we touch the sensor.

B.Calm technology will make our life more convenient.

C.People will depend more on smart phones in the future.

D.People won't have to work because of calm technology.

40. Which of the following is not true according to the passage?

A.You'll burn your bread if you don't use the smoke alarm.

B.Calm technology can be used to open curtains for us in the future.

C.We often use smart phones in our daily life.

D. The lights turn on when you pass their sensors.

Compass was a great gift to the world from ancient China. It was probably invented in the 3rd century B.C. Before it was invented, sailors had to depend on the stars to find direction. After it was invented, the oceans were open to travel. And many new discoveries were made with the help of it.

Gunpowder was one of the greatest inventions. It is said that in the 3rd century a Chinese wrote about how to make it. At first, it was used for making fireworks. At the end of the Tang dynasty, people began to use it in wars. The method of making it was brought to the Arab world and Europe in the 13th and 14th centuries.

China was the first country in the world to make paper. During the Western Han dynasty(202B. C.-9 A. D.), paper was made in some places in China. It was developed in the Eastern Han dynasty (25A.

D.-220A. D.) by Cai Lun. He made paper with bark, ropes, rags and so on. It was much cheaper and easier. Before it was invented, the ancient Chinese carved characters on animal bones and stones. They also wrote them on bamboo and wooden sticks.

Printing was developed in 1041-1048 in the Song dynasty. A man named Bi Sheng carved characters on pieces of clay and wood. Then he put ink on them. After the characters were printed on paper, the pieces of clay or wood could be used again. This technology then spread to Korea, Japan and Europe. It was the basic method at that time.
