What is enquiry?

An enquiry is a request for information about the goods, including catalogues, samples, prices, payment terms, delivery etc.

Does Mr. Smith place an order?

When a buyer makes an enquiry, he has no obligation to purchase. On the other hand, the seller who receives such an enquiry is under no obligation to reply. Classification

严格来说,它仅报一项价格,不包括数量、交货等。常用的句型为quote sb. price for sth.

有时可用quote sb. for sth., 即把price省去。

2.price跟对方谈到价格优势时,常用表达有:competitive(竞争的),workable (可行/做的),suitable(合适的),favorable(优惠的),realistic(实际的)等。

3. CIF= Cost, Insurance & Freight

CIF即成本、保险费加运费(……指定目的港),其是指在装运港当货物越过船舷时,卖方即完成交货,卖方必须支付将货物运至指定的目的港所需的运费和费用,但交货后货物灭失或损坏的风险,及由于各种事件造成的任何额外费用,即由卖方转移到买方。但是,在CIF条件下卖方还必须办理买方货物在运输过程中灭失或损坏风险的海运保险。

FOB=Free on Board(船上交货<……指定装运港>)。FOB是指货物在指定的装运港越过船舷,卖方即完成交货。这意味着买方必须从该点起承当货物灭失或损坏的一切风险。FOB术语要求卖方办理货物出口清关手续。

4. Commission

(1)佣金的含义。佣金是中间商因介绍交易或代买商品而获取的报酬。作为中间商因其有一定的贸易渠道,所以通过其开展交易已是国际贸易中的一种普遍做法。

(2)佣金的表示方法。在商品中包括佣金时,通常应以文字来说明。例如:“每公吨580美元CIF旧金山,包括2%佣金(US$200 per M/T CIF San Francisco including 2% commission)”;或“每公吨580美元CIF2%旧金山(US$200 per M/T CIFC 2% San Francisco)”。

1)名词order常与动词make, send, place等联用,如果表示订购某项货物,后接介词for,也可接on或of,但接for最普遍。

. subject to: 以……为条件,以……为有效这里subject to是形容词,subject to 引起的短语做表语,在报盘中常用以说明盘的性质

e.g. The offer is subject to our final confirmation. 该报价以我方确认为准。

subject to your acceptance within two weeks 以贵公司在两周之内接收为条件(说明此报盘为实盘)

credit 不可撤销的跟单信用证

letter of credit 可数的普通名词,在商业书信中常用大写,单数为(a)Letter of Credit,复数为Letters of Credit,且常用大写缩写形式,即L/C和Ls/C。当credit表示信用证时,复数为credits。

in seller?s favor 以卖方为受益人

还可以说in the favor of the seller, 这是外贸业务术语,尤值把信用证开给某人名下。

表示“以某人为受益人”“对……有利”可以用:in one?s favor, in the favor of sb.

e.g. We have made arrangements with Bank of China to open a credit in your favor.

我们已安排由中国银行开立以贵公司为抬头的信用证。

?An order is a written notification of purchase from buyers to sellers, demanding

sellers to supply the goods and services in accordance with the order. Nowadays, many a big company uses official printed order forms, which save time and ensure that no information maybe ignored.

Sellers should acknowledge the receipt of orders in written form without delay, no matter he or she accepts or rejects them.

同义词辨析

1. 中止合同与终止合同之区别

cancel a contract (中止合同):

因某些原因,暂时不履行各自义务和责任。(出现不可抗力后)中止后可恢复。

terminate a contract(终止合同):

Functions of payment

The payment plays a very important role in business. Terms of payment means

way or method of making payment. The methods we use in payment in the clearing of international trade are the letter of credit (L/C), collection and remittance.

1. Remittance

The payer (usually the buyer) remits a certain sum of money in accordance

with the parties? agreement to the payee (usually the seller) through a bank.

Payer may remit the sum in the following manner:

a). Mail Transfer (M/T)

b). Telegraphic Transfer (T/T)

c). Demand Draft (D/D)

This method of payment is often used for down payment(定金), payment of

commission and for sample, settlement of claim, or as performance bond(履约保证)etc.

2. Collection

The exporter, as drawer of a draft (bill of exchange), hands the draft to his

bank, the remitting bank, who in turn forwards it to the buyer through a collecting bank in the buyer?s country. A draft (also called a bill) is a written order to a bank or a customer to pay someone on demand or at a fixed time in the future a certain sum of money. If shipping documents accompany the draft, the collection is called “documentary collection.”

Documentary collection falls into two major categories: one is documents against payment (D/P), the other, documents against acceptance (D/A).

Documents against payments, as the term suggests, is that the collecting bank will only give the shipping documents representing the title to the goods on the condition that the buyer makes payment.

Where the paying arrangement is D/A, the collecting bank will only give the

buyer the shipping documents after buyer?s acceptance of the bill drawn on him, i.e. the buyer signs his name on the bill promising to pay the sum when it matures. In return he gets what he needs --- the shipping documents.

Under D/A, the seller gives up the title to the goods --- shipping documents

before he gets payment of the goods. Therefore, an exporter must think twice before he accepts such paying arrangement.

“ Packing is an art.” “ Packing or container is part of the product.” “ Packing should help identify the product inside”. This is true. Usually, buyers identify the product through package. Packing has become more and more important in competing for external markets. One of its basic purposes is to protect the product. This is important because the product may have to withstand a lot of handling during transportation between the factory and the consumer.

The second purpose in packing is to make the product look appealing to the buyers. Products that are packed in such a way as to catch the consumer?s eye will help to sell. Other common purposes of packing are to provide information about the product inside, make it easy to carry the product, and provide convenience in using the product. Therefore, more and more people, not only manufacturers, have come to realize the importance of packing.

Experience has shown that the packing used in transportation goods for home trade is not usually suited to foreign shipping. Most foreign shipping takes many weeks or months to reach its destination and frequently undergoes rough handling in loading and unloading. So the exporter has to give considerable attention to the packing of the goods to be shipped abroad.

It is his duty to pack the goods in accordance with the relevant terms in the sales contract and in a manner which assures their safe arrival and facilitates their handling

in transit and at the place of destination. Neglect in this respect will invariably result in damage or in delay in the delivery of the goods and might give cause to the overseas customer to reject the goods or to claim damages.
