Teaching involves more than leadership. Some of the teacher’s time and effort __25___(direct) toward instruction, some toward evaluation. But __26__is the teacher as a group leader who creates an efficient organizational structure and good working environment so that instruction and evaluation activities can take place. A group that is disorganized or fighting frequently among members will not be a good learning group. The leadership pattern includes __27__(help) to form and maintain a positive learning environment so that all activities can take place smoothly.

On the first day of class, perhaps a few closely united groups and friendships already exist. But there is no sense of group unity. If teachers are successful leaders, they will help students develop a system of relationships __28__ encourages cooperation.

Standards and rules must be established to maintain order, ensure justice, and protect individual rights, __29__do not go against school policy.

__30__ skilful the teacher is in uniting students and establishing a good atmosphere, the task is never complete. Regular maintenance is necessary. Conflicts

arise. The needs of each member change. A new kind of learning task __31__(require) a new organizational structure. Sometimes outside pressures such as holidays, upcoming tests or athletic contests, or family troubles cause stress in the classroom. One task for the teacher is __32__(restore) a positive environment by helping students to cope with conflict, change, and stress.

More people than ever are drinking coffee these days---but __33__ smaller quantities than they used to. Some manufacturers of coffee makers are trying to take advantage of this trend by developing small machines that brew __34__(small) amounts of coffee.

Two U.S. appliance companies----Black & Decker, __35__(base) in Towson, Maryland, and Toastmaster Inc. of Columbia, Missouri----have recently introduced “drip” coffee makers that brew one or two cup servings of coffee. We call that system of agreements language.

There is no necessary connection between the symbol and that which it stands for. Just as __43__ positions can be symbolized by feathers __44__on the head, by gold on the watch chain, or by a thousand other things according to the culture we live in, so the fact of being __45__ can be symbolized by a thousand different noises according to the culture we live in.

However __46__ these facts may appear at first glance, they are actually not so obvious as they seem except when we __47__ special pains to think about the subject. Symbols and the things they stand for are independent of each other, yet we all have a way of feeling as if, and sometimes acting as if, there were necessary connections. For example, there are people who feel that foreign languages are __48__ by nature; foreigners have such funny names for things, and why can’t they call things by their right names? This feeling__49__ itself most strongly in those English and American tourists who seem to believe that they can make the natives of any country understand English if they shout loud enough. Like the little boy who is __50__ to have said: “Pigs are called pigs because they are such dirty animals,” they feel that the symbol is inherently connected in some way with the things symbolized.
