第二部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)

A

To pollute or not to pollute? That is the question. In order to survive, we all need to cause pollution. Factories that process the food we eat, clothes we wear, and cars we drive have to cause pollution. The environment has the ability to absorb our waste or the pollution, but its absorption ability has its limits. If the pollution level is higher than what the environment can cope with, then that’s the time when pollution is bad.

If the pollution level becomes too high, human health can be affected badly. Then, the productivity level of the sick people is low and the economy suffers. The economy suffers not only because of the lost productivity of the people, but also because the government must pay

for the damage the pollution has done to its people.

This is the reason why the government prefers taxation policy. Imposing(征收)a tax on firms that pollute the environment can be considered a good strategy, as long as the tax covers all the external costs or the cost of the damage the firm has created during production.

Taxation, if enforced(执行)really well, can make firms create a technology that may reduce pollution, if they find out that it will be cheaper than continuously paying the tax. The disadvantage of this policy, however, lies in the possibility that some big firms will find the tax cheap and then they will just produce more and pollute the environment more. If other small firms find the tax expensive, thus closing down, their production will be eaten up by those firms which can afford the tax.

Therefore, it is important that lawmakers in each country, when deciding to impose a tax on pollutant emissions, first review and analyze very carefully the real cost of the damage.

21. We can infer from the first paragraph that

A. for human beings pollution is unavoidable

B. it's not easy to figure out how bad pollution is

C. humans should reduce the use of everyday products

D. we can survive without causing pollution.

22. The underlined word "absorb" here refers to “____”.

A. reduce

B. fit in

C. avoid

D. deal with

23. What is the second paragraph mainly about

A. The effects of pollution on human health.

B. The relationship between people and their government.

C. The effects of pollution on economic development.

D. The relationship between human health and economic development.

24. Which of the following can be the result of imposing a higher tax according to Paragraph 3 ?

A. Firms may reduce the prices of their products.

B. Firms may develop some environmental technology.

C.A big firm will be broken up into small firms.

D.A small firm will try to pass the tax on to consumers.

Customers chat, read the newspaper and order sandwiches and drinks at August First Bakery & Café in Burlington, Vermont, but there?s something different here. “ I was here working on my laptop when I looked over and saw that there was a sign that said …laptop-free,? says Luna Colt, a student at the University of Vermont. During a recent visit, Colt was shocked that using her computer was against the rules.

When owner Jodi Whalen first opened it four years ago, she offered free Wi-Fi to customers. Students like Colt went there in large numbers and started typing away — and staying. All day. “We saw a lot of customers come in, look for a table, not be able to find one and leave,” Whalen says. “It was money flowing out of the door for us.” That?s why Whalen decided there?d be no more screens. It was a gradual move. She started by shutting down the Wi-Fi two years ago. Then, the café banned screens during lunch. “A lot of people were bummed out,” Whalen says. “Bu t we actually saw our sales increase.”

What?s socially acceptable when it comes to using a laptop in public? Luna Colt thinks it?s about how much money you spend. “You should buy something every two hours if you?re going to be here and just work all day,” Colt says. As long as you?re being a good customer, she says, there?s nothing wrong with working on a laptop.

Not quite, according to Whalen. “It?s less about how much a laptop user buys, and more about table space. Even if they think they?re a good customer because they buy food, they?re still here for long hours,” she says. “To walk into a place and see people looking at their screens with a blank stare, it takes away the community aspect of it — of you being in a place with other people,” W halen adds.

29. Why is August First Bakery & Café different?

A. Customers are not allowed to use their laptops.

B. Those who visit the café are often very strange.

C. It offers unusual sandwiches and drinks.

D. It is only open to university students.

30. T he underlined words “bummed out” in Paragraph 2 probably mean “_____”.

A. grateful

B. fortunate

C. disappointed

D. frightened

31. We can infer from the text that Luna Colt _____.

A. works part-time in Jodi Whal en?s store

B. might not be popular with Jodi Whalen

C. likes the food in August First Bakery & Café

D. will not work on a laptop in public any more

32. What?s the main idea of the text?

A. It is good for our health to stay away from Wi-Fi.

B. A café owner improves sales by saying no to laptops.

C. A university student shows how to be a good customer.

D. People are efficient while working on a laptop in a café.

How smartphones could be reining your relationship

We carry our smartphones with us wherever we go. We didn’t have the time to set any boundaries for smarphone usage, and we find ourselves unable to save out relationships. Smartphones are very useful in many circumstances. 36 .

Lack of mindfulness

We become totally lost in our digital lives. Smartphones get in the way of our relationships, making it impossible for us to wholeheartedly devote our attention to the present moment. 37 Loss of communication

In fact, some people talk more about their relationships on Facebook than they do face-to-face with the person they’re actually in a relationship with! 38 Why not do something together, other than sitting side by side staring at the displays on your individual phones? Excessive (过度的) smartphone use makes it impossible for us to build any new, sincere relationships.

Prioritizing (优先) the wrong models of communication

39 We damage our happiness and harm our relationships, failing to see which is more important in our life. Small, precious moments are slipping away because we’re focused on reading all of our emails, and we get unreasonably anxious if we put our phones away even for 30 minutes.

40

I know you are very annoying about your results in the midterm examination. I’ve just read an useful article about how a positive attitude affect our behavior.

Naturally, fail an examination can be very discouraging. If you think too many about the past, you will never be able to focus what is more important for now and the future. Life is full of difficulties, but anyone may suffer setbacks. We must take a positive attitude towards the things we had to deal with. Great dreams do come truly if we make an effort. Just work hard and prepare for another chance.

You will make for it.

Yours,

Janet
