“Excuse me, what 1 is it?” said a voice in my ear. When I looked 2 over my shoulder, I was greeted by a ragged man who looked like a migrant worker (农民工). He was almost the same age 3 my elder brother, but his hair was messy and his working clothes were dirty and old. I was made to take two steps back from him because of a 4 smell. Disgusted (厌烦的) and puzzled, I gave him a blank stare and answered his question unwillingly.

“Thank you! I'm just 5 of being late for work,” he explained in a whisper, giving a nervous smile. I remained silent, nodding my head slightly.

The bus finally reached the station, and I 6 it. I reached into my pocket, and to my great surprise, it was 7 empty! I was 8 embarrassed(尴尬的) that I just froze. My face burned

三、阅读理解

(A)

We interviewed singer Maisie Peters after she gave a private show at Atlantic Records in Manhattan, New York. We had a lot of fun chatting with her – we even got to sing with her!

Q: At what age did you start singing and playing the guitar, and do you play other instruments? A: I think I started singing probably when I was 8 in a singing club. When I started playing the guitar, I was 12 or 13 years old. Actually, I played the guitar at first. I played it during my whole elementary school period, but I was so bad. My twin sister at that time played the clarinet. We were both equally awful. So my poor parents had to listen to terrible noises. Then I gave that up.

Q: How do you remember the words to your songs?

A: I sing them a lot. I guess when you do anything a lot, it’s just easier to remember. You just have to practice all the time. Before I go on stage, I sing all the words under my breath. I still forget words sometimes, which is embarrassing. But you get over it and it’s fine.

Q: What advice would you give to someone who wants to be a singer?

A: If you’re going to be a singer, put yourself out there as much as you can. It’s pretty easy to do that nowadays with social media and YouTube. And that’s how I got started. And when you’re my age … you feel like you’ve got the best stuff to present. You can start a career on your own nowadays. You don’t need anyone to help you with that. So just put yourself out there.

On the whole island, there were only three small huts, and one of these was empty when I arrived. There were holes in the roof, and the windows were broken, but I had them mended and moved in. No one came to visit me, and I was able to spend my days working, even though I hated what I was doing, and there were days when I could not continue. However, I made good progress ,and I knew that soon I would have created a female.

The monster had promised that if I made a female for him , he would go and live with her in the jungle and never kill again. But I did not know what the female would be like. It was possible that she would be worse than the monster I had already created. There was also the possibility that she would hate him. Then what would happen? I asked myself.

Suddenly, as I sat thinking, I heard a noise outside. I looked out of the window and saw the monster. He had followed me. Looking at him ,I knew now I could not. I knew that whatever happened I must not create another monster. I started destroying my work.

Through the window, the monster saw me do this. He pushed open the door. “What are you doing, Victory?” He shouted me. “Why have you broken your promise? Why are you now destroying all my hopes? You have created me, but I am your master. You will obey me and keep your promise.”

“No,” I answered. “I will not create another monster. Nothing you can say or do will make me change this decision. Now, go.”

He was silent for a moment. Then he said, “I will go now, but I shall be with you on your wedding night.” With these words he left the hut.

I stood at the door of my hut, knowing it was useless to follow him. I had made my decision,

and he had made his. “Would that be the end of his anger,” I asked myself, “or would he kill Elizabeth also if I married her?” I passed a sleepless night.

Forgiveness( 原谅, 宽恕) means different things to different people. Generally, however, it

includes a decision to let go of anger and thoughts of revenge( 复仇). The act that hurt or displeased you might always be with you, but forgiveness can reduce its control on you and free you from the control of the person who harmed you. Forgiveness can even lead to feelings of understanding for the one who hurt you. How do you start to forgive? Try the following steps.

Calm yourself. To remove your anger, try a simple stress-management way. “Take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure: a beautiful scene in nature, someone you love, ” Frederic says.

Don’t wait for an apology. “Many times the person who hurt you has no plan to apologize, ” Frederic says. “They may have wanted to hurt you or they just don’t see things the same way. So if you wait for people to apologize, you could be waiting an awfully long time. ” Keep in mind that forgiveness does not mean balancing with the person who upset you.

Keep off the unpleasant. Mentally replaying your hurt gives power to the person who caused your pain. “Don’t pay attention to your wounded feelings, learn to look for love, beauty and kindness around you, ” Frederic says.

Realize forgiveness is helpful. Research has shown that people who forgive have more energy, better appetite and better sleep pattern.

Don’t forget to forgive yourself. “For some people, forgiving themselves is the biggest
