I first started playing the piano when I was three. My parents are musicians, so they were both very encouraging. I found more beauty in a mathematical equation(相等), I told my parents, than in a piano sonata (奏鸣曲). So when I went to college, I chose to study mathematics, not music. Then I got a job, working as an accountant.

Matt Mason has seen the future—and it's fun. Mason likes thinking about how machines can make our lives easier by doing the work we hate, such as cleaning. He shows a hard floor cleaning system(系统)that's built into the wall: it will blow dirt to a part of the room where it will be collected by a vacuum(吸尘器). The fridge will have a touch screen(触摸屏幕)where you can watch TV, surf the Internet, check your e- mail, keep a shopping list and order vegetables.“Your fridge is the first place you go in the morning and the last place at night,” says Lee.

Ever wonder why a 1.9-meter man and a 1.6-meter woman have to cook meals on counters (工作台)of the same height.“The height was decided over 50 years ago, according to the height of ordinary women,” says Jane Langmuir, an expert of cooking machines.“But times have changed. We have made a new counter where you press a button and it moves to whatever height you want.” At the same time, Ted Selker at MIT's Counter lab has made the Dishmaker which lets you make dishes and bowls out of plastics at home. In his diary Thomas wrote, “When the Italians eat meat, they use small forks. They do not eat with their hands, because people do not always have clean hands.”

Before leaving for England, Thomas Coryate bought a few forks.

At home Thomas had a dinner party to show the invention to his friends. When the steak(牛排)was brought out, he took out a fork and began to eat as they did in Italy.

Sometimes, people are not clear about what kind of food is healthy, and what kind of food may do harm to our health. The USDA has prepared a food guide to help people learn about which kind of food is the healthiest to eat. The food guide describes six main food groups: meat (like fish and chicken), dairy(like milk and cheese), grains(like bread and rice), fruit, and vegetables. The last group is fats and sweets. The USDA also suggests(建议)how much of each food group is healthy to eat daily. Though this guide was prepared by the US government, it is very useful for people all over the world.

As a result of years of study, we know that too much animal fat is bad for our health. For example, Americans eat a lot of meat and only a small amount(量)of grains, fruit and vegetables. Because of the way they eat, they have a high rate(率)of cancer(癌症)and heart disease. In Japan, people eat large amounts of grains and very little meat. The Japanese also have a very low rate of cancer and heart disease. The Japanese live longer than anyone else in the world. However, when Japanese people move to the US, the rate of heart disease and cancer goes up as their eating habit changes. And as hamburgers, ice creams and other high-fat foods become popular in Japan, the rate of heart disease and cancer is going up there as well. People are also eating more meat and dairy food in other countries, in which the disease rate is going up along with the change of the way people eat. Doctors everywhere suggest people eat more grains, fruit and vegetables and less meat and dairy food.

Eating healthily is important for children as well as their parents. When parents have poor eating habits, their children usually do, too. After all, children eat the same way as their parents. When parents eat healthy food, the children will learn to enjoy it, too. Then they will develop good eating habits.Doctors suggest parents give their children healthier food such as fruit, vegetables and juice.

Everyone wants to live a long, healthy life. We know that the food we eat affects(影响)us in different ways. For example, doctors believe that fruit and vegetables can really protect people from many different diseases. On the other hand, animal fat can cause(引起)diseases. We can change our eating habits now and enjoy many years of healthy living.

1.What is the USDA in the passage?

C

We do some strange things when we don't like the way our life is going. Too often we blame (埋怨)someone else.

“I wish my parents were more understanding.”

“I have such a bad Chemistry teacher!”

“My friends are so boring and self-centred. They make my life worse and worse.”

Blame! Blame! Blame!

It seems natural to sing this self-pitying song, but the truth is, if you don't like your life, you should do something about it. No one else knows exactly how you feel or what you need. No one can read your mind correctly. You are the only one with the power(能力)to check your life, and

if you want it to be different, you can change what you're doing. This means asking...“What do I need? What do I want to do?” instead of trying to meet others' needs. For example, try to decide how you want to spend your evening instead of asking somebody else for advice. We teach other people how we want to be treated. If we don't think of our own needs, no one else will either.

When you're in trouble, don't give away your power to decide how you feel about yourself. Choose how you want to think and act(行动). Other people can't make you unhappy or angry. They only act in their own way and then it's up to you to decide how you will respond(回应). For example, your friends go out to lunch without you. You feel angry. How are you going to act? You may blame your friends...“They're not kind. Who needs them anyway?” or you may tell your friends how you feel, listen to their explanation(解释), and let them know you'd like to be invited next time.

When you decide everything in your own way, you're getting hold of your own life and shaping it according to your tastes and feelings. You can choose to be happy, to make friends and to build an interesting life. When you blame others for what is or isn't happening in your life, you have stopped growing or learning.

One of the most important rules is that you can never change another person by your direct action. The only person you have the right and power to change is yourself. Once you change, the other person then has something different to respond to and change is possible. If you want change in your life, begin with yourself...put love into your power to take action.

1.What should we do if we don't like our life?

A.Sing that self-pitying song.B.Read our minds correctly.

C.Change what we're doing.D.Tell others what we want.

2.If the writer's friends have dinner together without him, he may ________.

A.forget it and be still friendly with them B.talk to them and try to find out why

C.do the same thing to them in return D.ask somebody else to talk to them 3.What's the writer's idea about how to change others?

A.He thinks it's impossible to change others.

B.He believes our love can change everything.

C.He chooses to talk with others directly.

D.He prefers to change ourselves first instead.

4.How many points of view(观点)are mentioned in the passage?

A.Three.B.Four.C.Five.D.Six.

四、完形填空

“When you start to talk about responsibility(责任), I thought of a time in my life when I didn't want to accept(承担)responsibility for anything,” Elena said.“It was one of the most 1 times of my life. I don't know 2 , but I just felt like I had no control over anything. Part of the problem was that I was 3 very unsure of myself.”

“I started going around with a group of children who were always in 4 . I guess all of us were unsure, but nobody talked about it. Some of the children were taking drugs(毒品), so I had to prove(证明)how cool I was and 5 them too. I started staying out late, not doing my homework, and arguing with my 6 a lot. And if they tried to talk with me about what was wrong, I'd tell them they didn't understand me.7 I didn't feel that the children I stayed with understood me either. Most of them 8 listened to music all the time and didn't talk much.”

Module 1 When I arrived, it was early morning and it was raining. I got out of the car, went through a gate and walked along a path. In the east, the sky was becoming light. I knew it was there, but there was nothing to see. After about a mile, a stranger appeared in front of me. “Am I going the right way?” I asked. He knew where I was going. “Yes,” he replied. “you’ll get there in five minutes.” Finally, I came to some rocks and stopped. I looked over them, but it was silent and there was no sign of it. Suddenly, the clouds cleared and the rain stopped. The sun rose behind me and beyond the rocks. I saw that the ground fell away and down to a river, far below me. I was looking across the Grand Canyon, one of the wonders of the natural world. I looked down to the Colorado River, from here a silver stream nearly one mile below me. If you put the two tallest buildings in the world on top of the each other at the bottom of the canyon, they still wouldn’t reach the top. Then I looked across to the other side of the canyon. How far is it? It’s about fifteen miles, maybe more. Finally, I looked to my left and to my right, and on both sides the canyon went far away, about 277 miles long. The Grand Canyon is not just big. It’s huge! I remained by the canyon for about half an hour, and I asked myself, “Is the Grand Canyon the greatest wonder anywhere in the natural world?” I certainly know the answer. But what do you think? Module 2 Thanksgiving is an American festival. People give thanks for their food. It’s celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November and it’s a time for a special dinner among family and friends. We’ve celebrated the festival since the first pioneers from England arrived in America by ship in the seventeenth century. While they were crossing the Atlantic, many people died, and after they landed, their first winter was worse than any English winter. The local people, the Native Americans, taught the pioneers how to grow corn, catch fish and keep cows, sheep and hens. The following year they celebrated together by eating a dinner of the new food. We still celebrate Thanksgiving today with a traditional dinner. The kitchen is the most crowded room in our house because we all help to prepare the food there. We lay the table, then before we begin dinner, my father gives praise for the food, so we remember where the festival comes from. We usually eat too much, but it’s only once a year! We often listen to speeches and tell stories after dinner as well. When it’s all over everyone helps wash the dishes.
