What is a nanowire?
?A nanowire is a wire of diameter of the order of a nanometer (10?9meters).
?Alternatively, nanowires can be defined as
structures that have a lateral size constrained to tens of nanometers or less and an unconstrained longitudinal size.
?At these scales, quantum mechanical effects are important —hence such wires are also known as "quantum wires".

Possible evolution of the field-effect transistor.
(a) Metal-oxide-semiconductor FET (MOSFET): the planar gate affects the
conducting channel from one direction. (b) FINFET: the gate surrounds the channel from all but one side. (c) Nanowire FINFET: complete, but nonuniform wrap-around gate. (d) Vertical nanowire FET: the gate has a complete, uniform wrap-around gate. (e) Vertical array of nanowires after wrap-gate formation.Y. Cui, Z. Zhong, D. Wang, W. U. Wang, and C. M.
