In this part there are four passages followed by questions or unfinished statements, each with four suggested answers. Choose the one that you think is the best answer. Mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET by drawing with a pencil a short bar across the corresponding letter in the brackets.

Questions llm15 are based on the following passage:

I doubt that any historically valid treatment of that presidential administration can emerge for at least another decade, if then. I confess that when I came out of the White House I signed up to do an "insider volume", but sober, professional second thoughts have led me to put that project on ice until at least 1980. The problem is that I simultaneously know too much, and not enough. I know what I thought was happening. But I cannot fully document what happened. And I have seen enough highly classified documents to know that most of what the observers thought was happening was at best half right, at worst dead wrong. This has steered me in a different direction as far

as writing is concerned. I am now preparing what is frankly and unashamedly an ex parte memoir, "My Experiences in Washington. " It is based on what I believed to be true,

on the picture as I conceptualized it, of the presidential administration under which

I worked.

11. According to the speaker, the problem with "insider volumes" is that they

A. tell things that should not be told

B. lack historical perspective

A. put it in the refrigerator

B. gave up on it completely

C. took a rather cold attitude towards it

D. put it aside until later

13. When the speaker says that he simultaneously knew "too much, and not enough",

he means that he was

A. more perceptive than others who were involved at this time

B. too close to the events to see them objectively

C. unable to see any significance in Current events

D. confused by the number of important events that were taking place

14. The speaker's experience in reading classified documents made ~aim realize that

A. others had been mistaken in interpreting events that they had observed

B. others knew more about current events than he did

C. he was the only responsible person who knew the truth about government affairs

D. he was a more impartial observer than anyone else in the government

15. According to the speaker, "My Experiences in Washington" will deal with __

A. secret documents never before released to the public

B. an "insider's" conceptualization of the government's failures

C. his personal view of that presidential era

D. the administrative problems of the president

Questions 16--20 are based on the following passage:

NASA is releasing several images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope, which is the closest yet look at the red planet. Altogether there are four images, which show the entire planet. Each view shows the planet as it completes One quarter of its daily rotation. In these views the north polar cap is turned toward the Earth and is clearly visible at the top of each picture. The images were taken in the middle of the Martian northern summer, when the polar cap was at its smallest size. During this season the sun shines continuously on the polar cap. Previous spacecraft observations have shown that this summertime polar cap is composed of water ice, just like Earth's polar caps. The Hubble Telescope pictures reveal that great changes have occurred on the surface of Mars in the past 20 years. The Martian surface is ever changing. Some regions that were dark 20 years ago are now bright red; some areas that were bright red are now dark. Winds move sand and dust from region to region, often in huge dust storms. Over long timescales many of the larger bright and dark markings remain stable, but smaller details come and go as they are covered and then uncovered by sand and dust.

Is there something as truth? For a good many centuries "the search for truth" has been 31 the noblest activity of the human mind, but the seekers after truth have come to such 32 conclusions that it often seems that very little progress has been made. 33 ,there are many people who reel that we are actually going backward. They 34 , often contemptuously, that we have accumulated more "knowledge" than our ancestors, but they think we are farther from the truth than ever, or even that we have 35 the truth that we once possessed.

If people look for anything long enough without finding it, the question naturally arises 36 the thing is really there to find. You have seen a picture of an animal with a lion's head, a goat's body., and a serpent's tail--and maybe an eagle's wings for good 37

There is plenty of evidence that each part of this animal 38 --but there is no 39 evidence that the parts ever occur in this combination. It is at least conceivable that the seekers after "truth" have made a similar mistake and invented an 40 combination.

The sea breezes wake you up and make you eat well and sleep well. The city was planned with straight roads, and these roads cross each other at right angles, making squares as they do in many American cities. Very often you can find yourself on top of a hill in the city, looking down one of these straight roads as it rises and falls on its journey through the town. A good way to travel these roads is by cable car. These are buses that run on rails in the ground up and down the steep hills.

2013湖南学位英语仿真模拟试题 试题(一) Part I Reading Comprehension (30%) Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. Passage 1 Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage. What exactly is a lie? Is it anything we say which we know is untrue? Or is it something more than that? For example, suppose a friend wants to borrow some money from you. You say “I wish I could help you but I’m short of money myself.” In fact, you are not short of money but your friend is in the habit of not paying his debt and y ou don’t want to hurt his feelings by reminding him of this. Is this rally a lie? Professor Jerald Jellison of the University of Southern California has made a scientific study of lying. (76)According to him, women are better liars than men, particularly w hen telling a “white lie”, such as when a woman at a party tells another woman that she likes her dress when she really thinks it looks awful. However, this is only one side of the story. Other researchers say that men are more likely to tell more serious lies, such as making a promise which they have no intension of fulfilling. This is the kind of lie politicians and businessmen are supposed to be particularly skilled at: the lie from which the liar hopes to profit or gain in some way. Research has also be en done into the way people’s behavior changes in a number of small, apparently unimportant ways when they lie. It has been found that if they are sitting down at the time, they tend to move about in their chairs more than usual. T o the trained observer th ey are saying “I wish I were somewhere else now.” They also tend to touch certain parts of the face more often, in particular the nose. One explanation of this may be that lying causes a slight increase in blood pressure. The tip of the nose is very sensitive to such changes and the increased pressures make it itch. Another gesture which gives liars away is what the writer Desmond Morris in his book Manwatching calls “the mouth cover”.(77)He says there are several typical forms of this, such as covering part of the mouth with the fingers, touching the upper-lip or putting a finger of the hand at one side of the mouth. Such a gesture

成人高等教育学士学位英语模拟试题及答案解析(13) (1~5/共20题)Reading Comprehension Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished .statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. Concerning money or anything else, conflicts between husband and wife usually reflect a power struggle. Conflicts between parent and child often center around the same issue. As children enter adolescence, they begin to demand greater freedom to go where they please, do what they please, and make decisions without parental interference. Many American parents do not know how to deal with their teenagers and seek advice from books, lectures, and parent training courses. Parents want to maintain a friendly relationship with their teenagers and also want to guide them so that their behavior will be whatever the parents consider proper and constructive. But in a society of rapidly changing social and moral values, parents and children often disagree about what is important and what is fight. Arguments may concern such unimportant matters as styles of dress or hairdos. But quarrels may also concern school work, after school jobs, decisions, use of the family car, dating, and sex behavior. Some families have serious problems with teenagers who drop out of school, run away from home, or use illegal drugs. Because so much publicity is given to the problem teenager, one gets the impression that all teenagers are troublemakers. Actually, relatively few adolescents do anything wrong, and nearly all grow up into "solid citizens" who fulfill most of their parents’ expectations. In fact, recent studies show that the "generation gap" is narrowing. The vast majority of teenagers share most of their parents’ values and ideas. Many parents feel that they get along with their adolescents quite well. 第1题 According to the writer, conflicts between husband and wife usually reflect ________ A.feeling of hatred B.power struggle C.that they don′t care for each other D.that they may appeal to divorce 第2题 As children enter adolescents, they begin to do the following EXCEPT________ A.demanding greater freedom to go wherever they please B.making decisions without parental interference C.getting married whenever they please D.doing what they please 第3题 ". . . generation gap is narrowing.
