Look at the center circles of Picture 1. Which of the centre circles looks larger?

Take a first look and you probably think that the centre circle in Diagram A is smaller than that in Diagram B. In fact, they are exactly the same size.

Then look at the picture 2 above. What do you see? A vase(花瓶) or two faces? Does the picture change quickly from one to the other again and again? Maybe or maybe not, but you can never see them at the them time.

“What’s happening? Is something wrong with my eyes?” You may wonder at what you see. Don’t worry. Here is how it goes:

When we look at things, our eyes send messages to our brains and then our brains interpret(解读) the information. However, sometimes our brains interpret the received information in a wrong way. It seems that our eyes are playing a joke on us. This often happens and we call it “Visual illusion”(视觉错误).

Movie makers often make use of visual illusions. They make the objects around actors much smaller or bigger than usual. This makes us believe that the actors are much larger or smaller than they usually are. The movies Jurassic Park and Honey I shrunk (缩小) the kids just make use of visual illusions.

When I was a boy growing up in New Jersey in the 1960s, we had a milkman delivering (送) milk to our doorstep. His name was Mr. Basille. He wore a white cap and drove a white truck. As a 5-year-old boy, I couldn’t take my eyes off the coin changer(硬币盒) fixed to his belt. He noticed this one day during a delivery and gave me a quarter out of his coin changer. Of course, he delivered more than milk.. There was cheese, eggs and so on. If we needed to change our order, my mother would write a note“Please add a bottle of buttermilk next delivery” and place it in the

box along with the empty bottles. And then, the buttermilk would magically appear. All of this was about more than convenience(便利). There was a close relationship between families and their milkmen. Mr. Basille even had a key to our house, for those times when it was so cold outside that we put the box indoors, so that the milk wouldn’t be frozen. And I remember Mr. Basille from time to time taking a break at our kitchen table, having a cup of tea and telling stories about his delivery. There is sadly no home milk delivery today. Big companies allowed the production of cheaper milk, making it difficult for milkmen to compete. Besides, milk is for sale everywhere, and it may just not have been practical to have a delivery service. Recently, an old milk box in the countryside I saw brought back my childhood memories. I took it home and planted it on the back porch(门廊). Every so often my son’s friends will ask what it is. So I start telling stories of my childhood, and of the milkman who brought us friendship along with his milk.

26. What can be inferred (推断) from the fact that the milkman had the key to the boy’s house?

A.He wanted to have tea there.

B.He was a respectable person.

C.He was treated as a family member.

D.He was fully trusted by the family.

27. What does the underlined word “compete” mean?

A.完成

B.比较

C.销售

D.竞争

28. What is the best title for the passage?

A.The good old days

B.A milkman

C.A milk delivery

D.My childhood

S cience can’t explain the power of pets, but many studies have shown that pets can help lower blood pressure (血压) and raise chances of recovering(恢复) from a heart attack, reduce loneliness and spread good cheer.

Any owner will tell you how much joy a pet brings. For some, an animal provides more comfort than a husband/wife. A study by Karen Allen of the State University of New York measured(测量) stress levels and blood pressure in people – half of them pet owners while they did 5 minutes of arithmetic(算术) or held a hand in ice water. People completed the tasks alone, with a husband/wife, a close friend or with a pet. People with pets did it best. Those tested with their pets had smaller change in blood pressure and returned most quickly to usual heart beats. With pets in the room, people also made fewer math mstakes. It seems people feel more relaxed around pets, says Allen, who thinks it may be because pets don’t tell whether you are right or wrong.

A study reported last fall suggests that having a pet dog not only raises your spirits but may also have an effect on your eating habits. Researchers at Northwestern Memorial Hospital spent a year studying 36 fat people and were put on a diet-and-exercise programs; a separate group of 56 people without pets were put on a diet program. They found people lost about 11 pounds, or 5% of their body weight. Their dogs did even better, losing 12 pounds, more than 15% of their body weight. Dog owners didn't lose any more weight than those without dogs, say researchers, but got more exercise mostly with their dogs and found it worth doing.

29、What does the text mainly discuss?

A. What pets bring to their owners.

B. How pets help people calm down.

C. People's opinions of keeping pets.

D. Pet's value in medical research.

30、According to Allen, why did the people do better with pets around when facing stressful tasks?

A. They have lower blood pressure.

B. They become more patient.

C. They are less nervous.

D. They are in higher spirits.

31、The research mentioned in the last paragraph reports that _____.

A. people with dogs did more exercise

B. dogs lost the same weight as people did

C. dogs liked exercise much more than people did

D. people without dogs found the program unhelpful

D

A 10-year-old boy decided to study judo(柔道)although he had lost his left arm in a terrible car accident.

The boy began lessons with an old Japanese judo sensei(老师).The boy was doing well, but he couldn’t understand why, after three months of training, the master had taught him only one move.

“Sensei,”the boy finally said,“shouldn’t I be learning more moves?”

“This is the only move you know, but this is the only move you’ll ever need to know,”the sensei replied.

Not quite understanding, but believing in his teacher, the boy kept training.

Several months later, the sensei took the boy to his first tournament(锦标赛).

Surprising himself, the boy easily won his first two matches. The third match proved to be more difficult, but after some time, his opponent(对手)became impatient and charged; the boy quickly used his one move to win the match.

Still amazed by his success, the boy was now in the finals.

This time, his opponent was bigger, stronger, and more experienced. For a while, the boy appeared to be overmatched. The referee(裁判)was afraid that the boy might get hurt, so he decided to call a timeout. He was about to stop the match when sensei stopped him.

“No,” the sensei insisted,“let him continue.”

As the match carried on, his opponent made a big mistake: he dropped his guard, Instantly, the boy had won the match and the tournament. He was the mind.

“Sensei, how did I win the tournament with only one move?

“You won for two reasons,”the sensei answered.“Fist, you’ve almost mastered one of the most difficult throws in all of judo. Second, the only know defense(防御)for that move is for your opponent to hold your left arm.

32、What does the underlined word“overmatched”mean in the passage?

A. Be more energetic.

B. Be badly beaten.

C. Be strong-minded.

D. Be of low spirit.

33、Why could the boy win the tournament with only one move?

A. Because he was brave and skillful.

C. Because his opponents were impatient.

D. Because he mastered the hardest move.

34、Which of the following is right?

A. The boy lost his left arm in a terrible accident at the age of 10.

B. a story of a good Judo sensei

C. hold on to the last

四、阅读表达

阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的填空里填入一个最恰当的单词。

Body language sometimes speaks louder than words. Body language can tell you whether someone is happy to see you or not. One of the most important things that body language can tell, however, is whether a person is lying or not. Here’s how can decide whether someone is telling you the truth or not, based on body language alone.

The eyes are said to be the windows of the soul and of the things that the little windows will show you is whether someone is honest or not. When talking to people, look at their eyes and pay attention to whether they are turning away from your closes watch or not. People are usually uncomfortable when lying to the person that they are talking to. Besides lying, eyes that have a lot of movement usually show that the person is about to lie or that the person has told a lie.

People who lie often touch their noses and other parts of their faces. If you notice that someone talking to you unconsciously(无意识地)touches his nose, this probably means that he is lying,. The reason why people touch their faces when they lie is that lying usually causes an increase in blood circulation(血循环),leading to an uncomfortable feeling in the small blood vessels(血管)in the nose or in the face.

According common body language suggestion that someone is lying is when a person crosses his arms. Crossing the arms means that the person is both being defensive(防御的)and shutting himself off. People who are telling the truth will usually make an open gesture(姿势)with the arms on the side to show that they are not hiding anything. However, people will cross their arms when they are lying.

If you plan to use body language to tell whether someone is lying or not, make sure that you are noticed and that you are looking in the face and the person’s body all at the same time.

2015江苏高考英语D篇翻译

Freedom and Responsibility Freedom’s challenge in the Digital Age is a serious topic. We are facing today a strange new world and we are all wondering what we are going to do with it. Some 2,500 years ago Greece discovered freedom. Before that there was no freedom. There were great civilizations, splendid empires, but no freedom anywhere. Egypt and Babylon were both tyrannies, one very powerful man ruling over helpless masses. In Greece, in Athens (雅典), a little city in a little country, there were no helpless masses. And Athenians willingly obeyed the written laws which they themselves passed, and the unwritten, which must be obeyed if free men live together. They must show each other kindness and pity and the many qualities without which life would be very painful unless one chose to live alone in the desert. The Athenians never thought that a man was free if he could do what he wanted. A man was free if he was self-controlled. To make yourself obey what you approved was freedom. They were saved from looking at their lives as their own private affair. Each one felt responsible for the welfare of Athens, not because it was forced on him from the outside, but because the city was his pride and his safety. The essential belief of the first free government in the world was liberty for all men who could control themselves and would take responsibility for the state. But discovering freedom is not like discovering computers. It cannot be discovered once for all. If people do not prize it, and work for it, it will go. Constant watch is its price. Athens changed. It was a change that took place without being noticed though it was of the extreme importance, a spiritual change which affected

Passage 1 Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage: Babies who are breast-fed may be more likely to be successful in life, a new study published Tuesday suggests. The study followed more than 3,000 babies into adulthood in Brazil. The researchers found those who were breast-fed scored slightly higher in intelligence tests in their 30s, stayed in school longer and earned more money than those who were given formula(配方奶粉). In the U.S., some research has suggested that breast-feeding may raise a baby’s IQ(智商)by a few points. But a recent study with siblings(兄弟姐妹)found little advantage to breast-feeding. Horta says these previous studies didn’t follow children into adulthood to see if breast-feeding had long-term effects. 江苏学位英语考试真题及答案

2014年江苏学位英语考试真题答案 阅读理解一(2005年题) Without proper planning, tourism can cause problems. For example, too many tourists can crowd public places that are also enjoyed by the local people of a country. If tourists create too much traffic, the local people become unhappy. They begin to dislike tourists and to treat them impolitely. They forget how much tourism can help the country’s economy(经济). It is important to think about the people of a destination country and how tourism affects them. Tourism should help a country keep the customs and beauty that attract tourists. Tourism should also advance(推进) the well-being (health and happiness) of local people. Too much tourism can be a problem. If tourism grows too quickly, people must leave other jobs to work in the tourism industry. This means that other parts of the country’s economy can suffer. On the other hand, if there is not enough tourism, people can lose jobs. Businesses can also lose money. It costs a lot of money to build large hotels, airports, air terminals, first-class roads and other support facilities needed by tourist attractions. For example, a major international-class tourism hotel can cost as much as 50 thousand dollars per room to build. If this room is not used most of the time, the owners of the hotel will lose money. Building a hotel is just a beginning. There must be many support facilities as well, including roads to get to the hotel, electricity, sewers to handle waste, and water. All of these support facilities cost money. 91.If they are not used because there are not enough tourists, jobs and money are lost D. What is probably the reason if local people dislike tourists?
