Letters, though traditional in a way, help people express their ideas in a more exact way，without the careless tongue slips of telephone conversations. More importantly, it is long held that “To see is to believe.” and communication in written form is considered to be more formal than that done orally. Therefore, letters are always the preferred way of communication when it comes to formal occasions like job application, nailing down a contract or traveling information confirmation. It is not entirely groundless to say that letters are still indispensable

nowadays.

In a word, letters have their unique features to satisfy certain communication purposes and will therefore never be replaced by phones in people's daily life. It's perhaps more appropriate to say that they supplement each other instead of replacing each other.

My Idea of a University Arts Festival

University arts festival has always been a big occasion to display students’ talent in art as well as to cultivate their artistic taste. Therefore, to make the incoming arts festival more fruitful, I personally think it should include two parts: one is to organize some art activities among students such as singing, painting, photography, recitation or short play contests, and the other is to invite all kinds of art troupes to campus to stage excellent performances of ballet, orchestra or drama for our students.

As regards why university arts festival should be organized in this way, there are mainly two reasons: to develop students’ artistic potential and to enhance their aesthetic ability. By participating in art contests, students not only have a golden opportunity to show their special gift for art but also undergo sort of training through preparation, rehearsal and competition. Thus those activities encourage students to get involved in art activities, which is not readily accessible to them in normal times. Such an intimate contact with real art enables students to understand art better and appreciate it properly, which will refine their artistic taste in the long run.

Since my idea of arts festival integrate s training students’ artistic ability with improving their aesthetic taste, I believe it will go a long way in art education, which is also the ultimate aim of university arts festival.

The answer is absolutely yes. First of all, through volunteering we can gain more experiences. Whatever volunteering work we do, either being a volunteer teacher for a village school or a volunteer worker in a retired house, we can taste different lifestyles and broaden our horizon.

Secondly, through volunteering we can acquire the sense of being needed. Many people feel frustrated with travails in life and empty with the cycling of working and resting. Thirdly, through volunteering we can learn more good qualities. V olunteer work is team work, which needs good cooperation. According to a recent report, six university students hired cleaners to clean their dorm and do their laundry every week. Although we have no right to tell them what to do with their money, as a university student myself, I find this practice absurd.

For a start, away from our parents, it is in university that we learn to be independent adults. Cleaning the room and doing one’s laundry are the most basic living skills. If we always depend on others to take care of us, how can we survive when there is no one to help us? How can we take on any responsibility when we step into society?

For another, the practice reflects their flippant attitude towards money. The money they paid for the cleaners probably comes from their parents, who must be very depressed once they know the truth. It also sets a very bad precedent on campus. 便条写作 关于格式 便条(又称短笺)作为专业英语四级考试对英语应用文(practical writing)的考查点之一，是每年的固定题目。2005年专业四级考试大纲将便条的分值由5分增至10分。分值的增加应当引起我们对这道题目的重视。考试大纲对英语专业写作便条部分的测试要求是:"根据提示写大约50~60词的便条、通知、请帖等。要求做到格式正确，语言得体。考试时间为10分钟。"由此我们可以看出它所涉及的考点是格式和语言得体性。因此我们可以从格式、开篇结尾、表达是否清楚得当以及如何使用委婉语气和敬词这几方面着手进行复习和练习。 便条根据其用途可分成很多类，这里我们着重讲经常考的几类:邀请类便条、致歉类便条、通知类便条、致谢类便条和祝贺类便条。然后我们会以范文的形式解读其他类便条的写作步骤和内容重点。 便条写作是专四写作部分考试中得分很有灵活性的一道题目，既可能得满分，也可能得分很低。其得分高低的关键之一在于格式是否正确。考试大纲对英语专业写作测试要求中提到:"便条写作最主要的是注意格式正确"。因此我们首先要熟练掌握便条写作的格式。 称呼顶格、日期在右、首行缩进、署名签在后 英文书信由6个部分组成:信头、信内地址、称呼、正文、谦语和署名。而便条写作有别于普通的书信，属于非正式书信。它的格式非常清晰简单。它的篇幅短小，无需写信内地址，有时也无需写祝词和谦语。如此清晰的格式，我们可以将其简单地总结为:"称呼顶格、日期在右、首行缩进、署名签在后"。一篇便条作文格式 可用以下简图示意: 1.称呼要顶格，可根据亲疏关系冠以尊称或直呼姓名。可用Dear Sir or Madame，Dear Tom 等正式称呼，也可直呼其名。在称呼后面一般用逗号(英国式)，有时也可以用冒号(美国式)。我们习惯上还是用逗号。写给亲人和关系密切的朋友时，用Dear或My Dear再加上表示关系的称呼或直呼其名。例如:My dear mother，Dear Alice等。商务信函用Dear Sir或Gentleman(Gentlemen)。请注意不能出现Dear Gentlemen这种称呼,Gentlemen前不能加Dear。我们也可用头衔或职位等再加姓名。例如:Dear Professor David Smith，Dear Dr.John Wells. 2.日期写在右上角。便条的日期既可写明具体年月日，也可只写星期几，若日期的准确性要求高也可以写明具体时刻。日期可写成Mayll-9005(美国)、llMay，2005(英国)、Mayllth，2005;llthMay，2005等形式。Mayll,2005此种用法最为普遍。 3.正文首行第一个字母缩进四个字母。便条正文位置在称呼语下面隔一行。正文注意不要按汉语习惯问候"Hell0"。首行向右缩进，通常以缩进四个字母为宜，第二行从左面顶格写起，这是缩进的格式。 4.署名签在最后，应在右下角。署名前可视情而定，写Y ours sincerely，Y ours ever，RespectfuIly yours等等以表恭敬之意，也可直接签名。注意一般不要按汉语写信习惯写"Y our be St friend"，"Y our classmate"等称谓。谦语位置低于结束语一至二行，从信纸中间偏右的地方开始写。另外关于谦语我们还要掌握一定的规则:(对地位高的人或长辈):Respectfully yours，Y ours respectfully(对不太熟悉或应表示客气的人):Y ours truly(亲密的朋友、亲属之间):Affectionately

专四便条写作

Note-writing 常见的体裁有告示、祝贺、道歉、请求、拒绝、安慰、留言、邀请等简单的应用文。 便条评分标准 (一)格式 包括日期，称呼和结尾三部分．各占1分 日期、称呼和结尾不符合正确格式或要求均扣1分。结束语和谦语在同一行，人名没有写或用××表示等扣一分，最多扣2分。 （二）内容6分 必须按照便条的具体要求，完整写出各项内容，缺一项就会扣分；语言较差（包括语法和拼写错误）也要扣分．拼写错误超过3个扣2分． 以05年邀请函作文为例： ①描述(2分) ②邀请(2分) ③语言表达(2分) ④首句需用自己正确的语言表达，若完全抄提示扣1分。 ⑤语言表达较差(包括语法和拼写错误)，扣1-3分。 （三）语言 要求语法，词法正确。 严重词法、句法错误扣1分，一个句子或同类错误扣1分，拼写等小错误两个扣1分，最多扣4分。 （四）语言得体性（1分） 总分在8分及以上可考虑加此分。 语言风格与情景不一致，扣1分。(如：Yours truly, Truly yours, if you consent, etc.) 只有语言表达较好才可得分。

评分总体要求： ①语言没有严重错误，格式对，内容完整，语言得体，字数符合要求(<80，>40)，可给9-10分。 ②便条总字数(包括三部分格式在内)要求在50-60字；不到40字或超过80字扣1分。 第一节邀请类 四步： 1.告知There will be… We have held…I want to tell you that… 2.解释in the Beijing Grand theater tomorrow evening 3.询问If you are interested in it 4.确认Please let me know whether you are prevented from coming or not. 书写要求： 1.时间、地点、场合一定要清楚，不能让对方有疑问。 2.时间要写明年月日并精确到时刻，以保证被邀请者能安排好时间。 正确格式：May 10th, 2010 May 10, 2010 10/5/2010 5/10/2010 场合也要写清楚。 3. 语言应注意礼貌用语，措辞要得体，以表示尊敬。同辈间相对用语轻松；长辈或上级，用语要相对正式，礼貌。例如：Dear Professor Wang, Respected Professor Wang， 格式： *右上方注明日期； *另起一行，最左边写称呼。注意根据关系，选择合适称呼； *另写一行空两格写主体部分。 *最后右下方署名，根据实际关系选择合适的词。正确格式：Yours s incerely (truly, faithfully, respectfully…), Susan 或者： Sincerely (Truly, Faithfully, Respectfully, Affectionately…) y ours, Sally；
