Passage2

The fourth Thursday in November is called Thanksgiving Day. In the United States, it is an annual occasion to show thanks to God for his goodness.

As a historical, national and religious holiday, Thanksgiving Day began with the English in Plymouth Colony. As far back as 1621, after a long bitter winter and the gathering of the first harvest, these early settlers shared a feast with the local Indians and offered prayers of thanksgiving. The first national Thanksgiving Day was proclaimed(颁布)by President Washington on November 26, 1789. President Lincoln revived the custom in 1863.

It was not until 1941 that the U.S. Congress adopted a resolution(决定), setting the fourth Thursday of November as an annual Thanksgiving Day. Thus what began as a religious celebration of the harvest has since become a nationwide holiday.

The duck was the now-famous Donald Duck, who first appeared in 1934 in the film The Wise Little Hen. Donald lived in an old houseboat and wore his sailor jacket and hat. Later that year he became a star after an eight-minute Mickey Mouse film. The cinema audience liked him because he was lazy and greedy, and because he lost his temper very quickly. And they loved his voice when he became angry with Mickey's eight nephews. Soon Donald was more popular than Mickey Mouse himself, probably because he wasn't a goody-goody like Mickey.

In the 1930s, 40s and 50s Donald and his friends Mickey, Goofy and Pluto made hundreds of Disney cartoons. He also made educational films about the place of the USA in the world and safety in the home. Then in 1966 Donald Duck and his voice disappeared---there were no more new cartoons.

Passage 8

Since their strongest connection has always been with family, when it comes to friendship, the French seem to be more careful than the British. A Frenchman may be ready to start a chat with a stranger in a train or caféand a discussion with feelings, but the speakers will remain unknown to each other by name; personal questions are not asked in most cases.

The British and Americans are certainly more open than the French when meeting new people, developing them quickly into friends, asking them home, and calling them “Bill”. The French themselves admit that they are careful in developing new friendships in a society still based on mistrust(猜疑), and much talking has to be done before this mistrust disappears.

Yet the French consider the British-American style of so-called friendship to be lacking in depth. The French do not make true friendship lightly, and most of these are formed in youth, or slowly over the years among co-workers. Once made, they will be lasting and faithful. But except at a higher executive (行政的)level, office co-workers do not often try to meet each other socially and casual friendship is seldom seen between workers of different grades. This can make life lonely for anyone who arrives to work in a new town, especially Paris, without existing friends. However, the pattern has been changing in the past ten years, especially among younger workers and in new-style offices open to American methods.

1.The French are usually closest to their ______.

A. friends

B. co-workers

C. family

D. British neighbors

2.Generally speaking, when a Frenchman talks with a stranger, he ______.

A. does not start talking at first

B. is ready to talk with feelings

C. introduces his name first

D. talks about his family

3.According to the passage the British ______.

A. do not like the French very much

B. are careful making new friends

C. invite new friends to their homes sometimes

D. do not trust people whom they have newly met

4.The following statements are true EXCEPT ______.

A. The British style of friendship is similar to the American style

B. The friendship of the French is often deep

C. Young co-workers often meet each other after work these days

D. The French do not have true friends

5.The best title for the passage may be ______.

A. The British, American and French Styles of Friendship

B. The French Style of Friendship

C. Deep and Casual Friendship in France

D. The Changes of the French Style of Friendship

Passage 9

Every country has its heroes. The heroes are the people, the nation and especially the young people admire. If you get a list of the heroes of a nation, it will tell you the potential(潜力)of the nation.

If today in America, you ask the high school students to list their heroes, their choice would probably fall into three groups. The first group of heroes would be the rock stars-the people connected with rock music. There is no doubt that such people

do have talent but one wonders if one should hold up rock stars as a model. The rock stars too often are involved with drugs and their personal life is not all that good. The rock stars are rich and wear the latest fashion styles. However, one should seek more in a hero than such things as money and good clothes.

A second type of hero for the American youth is the sports star. Again you have a person who has a great ability in one area -SPORTS. However, too often the personal life of the sports star is a bit of a mess. Too frequently drugs and drinking are a part of life of the sports star.

A third type of hero is the TV or movie star. This person may have lots of acting talent and is quite handsome. However, the personal life of too many actors is quite disgraceful(不光彩的)and they should not be held up as a model for young people.

Today, the rock star, the athlete and the actor all have become the models of the youth in America. Really, do you hear a young person say that his hero is a doctor, a teacher , or a scientist? These people are not rich and do not wear fashionable clothes. However, they are talented people who work hard to make the world a better place for everyone.

What is really sad is that the young try to imitate(模仿)their heroes. They like to wear the same clothes and follow their styles. If the heroes of today for the American youngsters are limited only to rock stars, athletes and actors, the future does not look too bright.

1.American young people will not admire ______.

A. a university professor

B. a popular singer

C. a football player

D. a film actress

2.According to the writer, people should hold up as their model those ______.

A. who are rich and wear the latest fashion clothes

B. whose personal life is good

C. who can express people's feelings

D. who work in the interests of the people

3.What is the writer's attitude towards American youth's admiration for their heroes?

A. He is understandable.

B. He is critical.

C. He is angry.

D. He is uninterested.

A. who has done something brave

B. who plays an important role in a play

大学英语期末考试卷

大学英语阅读测试一(1) Part I??Reading Comprehension (Reading in Depth) Directions: There are 4 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre. Passage One Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage. There are many famous museums throughout the world where people can enjoy art. Washington, D.C. has the National Gallery of Art (美术馆); Paris has the Louver; London, the British Museum. Florida International University (FIU) in Miami also shows art for people to see. And it does so without a building, or even a wall for its drawings and paintings. FIU has opened what it says is the first co mputer art museum in the United States. You don’t have to visit the University to see the art. You just need a computer linked to a telephone. You can call the telephone number of a university computer and connect your own computer to it. All of the art is stored in the school computer. It is computer art, produced electronically by artists on their own computers. In only a few minutes, your computer can receive and copy all the pictures and drawings. Robert Shostak is director of the new computer museum. He says he starts the museum because computer artists had no place to show their works. A computer artist can only record his pictures electronically and send the records, or floppy discs, to others to see on their computers. He can also put his pictures on paper. But to print good pictures on paper, the computer artist needs an expensive laser printer. Robert Shostak says the electronic museum is mostly for art or computer students at schools and universities. Many of the pictures in the museum are made by students. Mr Shostak said the FIU museum would make computer art funnier for computer artists because more people can see it. He says artists enjoy their work much more if they have an audience. And the great number of home computers in America could mean a huge audience for the electronic museum. 1. The main purpose of this passage is to give information about _______. A) museums throughout the world B) an electronic art museum in Miami, U.S. C) art exhibitions in Florida International University D) latest development of computer art 2. To see the art in FIU museum, you need _____. A) floppy discs B) a computer and a printer C) pictures and drawings on paper D) a computer connected to the museum by telephone line 3. _____ are stored in this museum. A) Paintings drawn by means of computer B) Different styles of paintings C) Old paintings D) Drawings done by art students of FIU 4. The museum was started when _____.
