第二部分阅读理解(共25小题;每小题2分,满分50分)

第一节阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

When six the very best students from different cities in Guangdong province all together chose universities in Hong Kong; when the very best student of Beijing picked up HK University while giving up the nearby Peking or Tsinghua University; when the highest enrollment (录取)rate of HongKong Science and Industry University reached 48:1, it’s the high time to ask where the real education heaven for students in China is.

Years ago, the answer certainly would be “Peking or Tsinghua University”. But now no one could give the exact reaction without hesitation. The only sure thing is that HK universities have gradually showed an unusual attraction to a great many mainland students.

It’s no doubt to call this HK craze(狂热), which is even out of the expectation of those HK universities themselves.

How can HK universities shake the steady foundations of Peking and Tsinghua and attract so many mainland students?

First, Hong Kong universities offer large-amount scholarship, especially for the top students who receive the sum scholarship as much as 400,000 HK dollars. Since higher education has become a kind of heavy burden of many families, it’s easy to understand why the reaction to the generous offering of HK universities is great.

Second, most HK universities receive professors and students from all over the world and

carry out bilingual(双语)education. This kind of excellent language atmosphere is another attraction for mainland students.

Further more, university students in HongKong have a better chance to study abroad as exchange students.

Can mainland top universities like Peking or Tsinghua University calm as before when facing the unexpected competition from HK? Will they take relevant measures to win back the top students who once help them set the worldwide reputation? Time will explain it.

The fierce competition brought by HK universities can be a good thing for an entire improvement of education in China. After the awakening and action taking of mainland universities, they can perform better together with HK universities.

At least, it reminded the mainland universities the tuition fees are among students’top concern when they are choosing universities. It’s time to move.

D. Peking University has lost its world wide reputation

43. From the passage we can see HK universities .

A. didn’t mean to enroll top students from mainland

B. didn’t expect their enrollment of mainland students would be so popular

C. have strict enrollment rules and only 1 out of 48 students can get the chance to study there

D. are proud of their teaching staff and facilities

44. What does the author mean by saying “It’s time to move.” in the last paragraph?

A. Mainland universities should take measures as soon as possible to attract students.

B. The opportunities come for top students to study abroad.

C. Mainland universities should make full preparations to challenge HK universities.

D. Top students should be offered further education free of charge.

Among the crowd of Olympian gods the most famous one was Apollo. He was the son of Zeus and Letto. According to Greek mythology, Letto was driven by Hera, Zeus’wife, from land to land and at last Poseidon took pity on her and brought the island of Delos out of water for her to live on. There she gave birth to the twins, Apollo and Artemis.

Wearing a purple robe, Apollo usually sat in his bright eastern palace early in the morning and made ready to start his daily journey across the sky. During the day he drove his carriage of gold and ivory(象牙), and brought light, life and love the great world below. In the afternoon he came to the end of his journey in the far western sea and got on his golden boat to return to his eastern home.

Apollo was the god of music and poetry. He could bring about all feelings, which are expressed in his noble songs. With his gold musical instrument and the sweet accents of his godlike voice he led the choir of the muses (音乐女神们)at Olympus. On another occasion, he lost a musical contest and turned the ears of the judge, King Midas, into those of an ass(驴子).

Apollo stood for youthful and manly beauty. His golden hair, stately manner and air all combined to make him the admiration of the world. A beautiful girl, by the name of Clytle, was so fond of his beauty and glory that from dawn to dusk she knelt on the ground, her hands outstretched towards the sun god, and her eyes looked at his golden wheeled carriage racing across the blue sky. The first bullet train designed and manufactured in China with a speed of 300 kilometers per hour rolled off the production line on Saturday morning. The train was the latest model in the country’s China Railway High-speed (CRH) Series. This marks that China has joined a leading world club after Japan, France and Germany to become the fourth country capable of turning out such high speed trains. Previously, China’s fastest selfdeveloped trains ran at a service speed of up to 250 km per hour.

Those trains, which presented to public on April 18, served the Beijing-Harbin, Beijing-Shanghai and Beijing-Guangzhou routes. The new streamlined train was made of aluminum alloy(铝合金). The train body was the lightest of its kind in the world; such a design was for the sake of energy economization. The train’s power was 12.7 kilowatts, lower than other high-speed trains, which was normally about 15 kilowatts.

The new train, which features a bar in the dinning car and double-faced LCD TV screens in the first-class cars, was equipped with shock absorbers between carriages. As the train is running at a high speed, the shock absorbers are used to reduce shocking force and rocking of the train body. A train with eight carriages could seat about 600 passengers. They were expected to run on the 115-km Beijing-Tianjin route starting from August before the Beijing Olympic Game. It would reduce the journey time from the current 80 minutes to around 30 minutes.

Many people think New York is a noisy city. In fact, scientists who study noise say that the average level there is 72. 5 decibels. This is a little louder than normal conversation, which is 65 decibels. The noise level comes from having so many people and cars in the same area.

Now even the insides of taxis are noisy. When you get into a taxi, you hear the voice of a famous person tells you what to do. One popular singer gives this message: “Cats have nine lives, but you have only one, so buckle your seat belt!" Other voices say things such as "Don't forget to collect all your belongings.”

There is a good reason for the messages. There are more than 12,000 cabs in New York, and every year taxis get into more than 15,000 accidents. In an accident, people who don't wear seat belts hit the partition in the taxi. They can bruise their foreheads or break their noses or chins. Every year, about 11,000 people are injured in this way.

Many people are annoyed by the voices. Cabdrivers in particular dislike the messages. "I play the messages 12 hours a day. I hear the same voices 60 times a day. It makes me crazy.”Says Amir, a cabdriver. “ Bu t if I don't, I get fined $110.”Many passengers complain, too. “It's too much noise, I asked the driver to turn it off, but he said he can't. "

Other people think the voices are a great idea. One taxi “river says, "People like to hear the famous voices, and they put on their seat belts more often. " And passengers from out of town really like the idea. "Most of the time, taxi drivers are in a bad mood," says one visitor. "It's nice to hear a cheerful voice when you get into a cab. "

53. What would be the best title for the text?53—56 BDDB

B. It's dangerous for you to take a taxi.

C. If you have nine lives, you don't need to buckle your seat belt.

D. Life is very important, so you should put on your seat belt when taking a taxi.

55. According to the text, why do passengers from out of town like the voices?

A. Because there is no such voice in their local places.

B. Because people like to hear the famous voices.

C. Because the famous voices can persuade them to put on their seat belts.

D. Because taxi drivers in New York may be cold towards passengers out of town.

56. It can be inferred from the passage that

A. Some day the messages will be cancelled because they've been disliked by drivers and

passengers

B. If taxi drivers aren't fined for not playing the message, Amir may turn it off

C. Most people are annoyed by the voices, especially passengers

D. People often leave something in taxis

E

While still in its early stages, welfare-reform has already been judged a great success in many states--at least in getting people off welfare. It's estimated that more than 2 million people have left the rolls since 1994.

In the past four years, welfare rolls in Athens County have been cut in half. But 70 percent of the people who left in the past two years took jobs that paid less than $ 6 an hour. The result: The Athens County poverty rate still remains at more than 30 percent---twice the national average.

For advocates(代言人)for the poor, that's an indication much more needs to be done.

"More people are getting jobs, but it's not making their lives any better," says Kathy Lairn, a policy analyst at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities in Washington.

A center analysis of US Census data nationwide found that between 1995 and 1996, a greater percentage of single, female-headed households were earning money on their own, but that average income for these households actually went down.

But for many, the fact that poor people are able to support themselves almost as well without government aid as they did with it is in itself a huge victory.

"Welfare was a poison. It was a toxin(毒素)that was poisoning the family," says Robert Rector, a welfare-reform policy analyst. "The reform is changing the moral climate in low-income communities. It's beginning to rebuild the work ethic(道德观), which is much more important. "

Mr. Rector and others argued that once "the habit of dependency is cracked," then the country can make other policy changes aimed at improving living standards.

57—60 DCAB

57. From the passage, it can be seen that the author .

A. believes the reform has reduced the government's burden

B. insists that welfare reform is doing little good for the poor

C. is overenthusiastic about the success of welfare reform

D. considers welfare reform to be fundamentally successful

58. Why aren't people enjoying better lives when they have jobs?

A. Because many families are divorced.

B. Because government aid is now rare.

C. Because their wages are low.

D. Because the cost of living is rising.

59. What is worth noting from the example of Athens County is that .

A. greater efforts should be made to improve people's living standards

B. 70 percent of the people there have been employed for two years

C. 50 percent of the population no longer relies on welfare

D. the living standards of most people are going down

60. From the passage we know that welfare reform aims at .

A. saving welfare funds

B. rebuilding the work ethic

C. providing more jobs

D. cutting government expenses

Where is it made in?
