Weeks of rain had flooded the train line. The late evening train from Glasgow couldn’t move, so the driver backed up to the nearest station where we sat and waited for about half an hour with no one knowing what was going on. I didn’t mind.

I wasn’t going home to anyone, I had music to listen to and it wouldn’t be the first night I had slept on a train, but not everyone would be in that position.

We sat another half an hour and then the driver announced (宣布) he was taking the train back to Glasgow and anyone who didn’t want to come with it should get out now, so a train load of people descended the train. The station was closed and the only cover was a bus shelter. It seemed the little country town was closed for the night.

Wandering (漫步) outside the station I saw a taxi. I was about to jump in and head off when among the crowd I noticed a young woman with a baby that looked only weeks old. I asked her if she wanted to share the taxi. She looked me up and down. Her eyes shone. She didn’t have enough money she explained, but she could pay when she got home. I invited her to take the taxi with me. She gave me a warm smile. Maybe my appearance told her that I could be trusted. In the silence of the journey, seeing the baby sleeping in the warm taxi, I suddenly felt very happy.

Nearing home I asked the driver to stop. I could walk the mile from here. He should take the mother and the baby straight home, and I gave him enough money to cover the full fare for both of us. When it comes to learning a foreign language, many people wonder if they will be able to memorize enough vocabulary. But this question never occurs to anyone with regards to their mother tongue, yet it was once a foreign language, too. Among all the questions that new parents ask their doctors, none has ever asked, "Will my baby be able to learn my language?"

Be honest. Do you know all the words of your mother tongue? The answer is "no". New words and new ways of using old words appear every day. Twenty years ago, who would have been able to understand the sentence, "Click here to download your digital book."? Nobody. You never stop acquiring (获得) new vocabulary and you never know how long you will need to use it.

Sometimes you have a word on the tip of your tongue and it stays there, but no one thinks this phenomenon (现象) is due to a bad memory. You should not give this phenomenon any more importance in the language you are learning than in your mother tongue.

You need to learn only about 2,000 basic French words to be able to communicate in French. You can’t avoid working in order to learn these necessary words, especially if you want to pick up the language quickly. Before you consider trying out a new method, be sure it is suitable for you. It is not always wise to rely on a method based upon mnemotechnics(记忆术). At first words may seem very easy to learn, but later on you will quickly discover that it can be very difficult to learn the dozens of new words you will meet with because you also have to learn methods you use to memorize them.

A. one should be honest and answer "no" to a question you are not sure of

D. people find it difficult to memorize the vocabulary of their mother language

73. The author of this passage is probably _______.

A. a French teacher

B. a researcher on mnemotechnics

C. a baby doctor

D. a foreign language beginner

More people die in boating accidents every year than in airplane crashes (坠毁) or train accidents, but a little common sense can make boating both enjoyable and safe. If you are going boating, pay attention to the following tips.

Wine and water don’t mix. Make sure the person handling the boat doesn’t drink as alcohol can affect a person’s judgment (判断力)no matter where they are on the water. As there are no road signs on the water and the weather can change easily, it’s important to be able to think and react quickly.

Wear a life jacket. It’s always a good idea for everyone on the boat to wear a life jacket of good quality, whether the boat is large or small and whether you’re a good swimmer or not. ________ is like wearing a helmet (头盔)while cycling. It is the law in some areas for certain age groups, and you could face strict punishment for breaking it. It may take a few minutes to get used to it, but it really can be a lifesaver.

Don’t leave land without one. Make sure others have access to you when you’re in danger. Before going out on a boat, let somebody on land know where you are going and about how long you’ll be out. That way, if you do get into trouble,

someone will have an idea of where to look for you. If you’re going to be on the water for a long time, it’s a good idea to have a radio with you so you can receive weather forecasts. If you receive a storm warning, you should get out of the water as quickly as you can.
