Reading (6分) 1. I first heard this tale in India, where it is told as if true — though any naturalist would know it could not be. Later someone told me that the story appeared in a magazine shortly before the First World War. That magazine story, and the person who wrote it, I have never been able to track down. The country is India. A colonial official and his wife are giving a large dinner party. They are seated with their guests — officers and their wives, and a visiting American naturalist — in their spacious dining room, which has a bare marble floor, open rafters and wide glass doors opening onto a veranda. A spirited discussion springs up between a young girl who says that women have outgrown the jumping-on-a-chair-at-the-sight-of-a-mouse era and a major who says that they haven’t. “A woman’s reaction in any crisis,” the major says, “is to scream. And while a man may feel like it, he has that ounce more of control than a woman has. And that last ounce is what really counts. The American does not join in the argument but watches the other guests. As he looks, he sees a strange expression come over the face of the hostess. She is staring straight ahead, her muscles contracting slightly. She motions to the native boy standing behind her chair and whispers something to him. The boy’s eyes widen: he quickly leaves the room. Of the guests, none except the American notices this or sees the boy place a bowl of milk on the veranda just outside the open doors. The American comes to with a start. In India, milk in a bowl means only one thing — bait for a snake. He realizes there must be a cobra in the room. He looks up at the rafters — the likeliest place — but they are bare. Three corners of the room are empty, and in the fourth the servants are waiting to serve the next course. There is only one place left — under the table. His first impulse is to jump back and warn the others, but he knows the commotion would frighten the cobra into striking. He speaks quickly, the tone of his voice so commanding that it silences everyone. “I want to know just what control everyone at this table has. I will count three hundred —that’s five minutes —and not one of you is to move a muscle. Those who move w ill forfeit 50 rupees. Ready!” 1. According to the text, the author _______.(1.0分) A.wrote the magazine story that appeared before World War I. B.found the person who wrote the story. 成人高等学历英语作业2-2(仅供参考)

2-2 ( 总分: 41 ) Reading (5分) 1. How does a doctor recognize the point in time when he is finally a “surgeon”? As my years as chief resident drew to a close I asked myself this question on more than one occasion. The answer, I concluded, was self-confidence. When you can say to yourself, “There is no surgical patient I cannot treat competently, treat just as well as or better than any other surgeon”---then , and not until then, you are indeed a surgeon. I was nearing that point. Take, for example, the emergency situations that we encountered almost every night. The first few months of the year I had dreaded the ringing of the telephone. I knew it meant another critical decision to be made. Often, after I had told Walt or Larry what to do in a particular situation, I’d have trouble getting back to sleep. I’d review all the facts of the case and. Not infrequently, wonder if I hadn’t made a poor decision. More than once at two or three in the morning, after lying awake for an hour, I’d get out of bed, dress and drive to the hospital to see the patient myself. It was the only was I could find the peace of mind I needed to relax. Now, in the last month of my residency, sleeping was no longer a problem. There were still situations in which I couldn’t be certain my decision had been the right one, but I had learned to accept this as a constant problem for a surgeon, one that could never be completely resolved---and I could live with it. So, once I had made a considered decision, I no longer dwelt on it. Reviewing it wasn’t going to help and I knew that with my knowledge and experience, any decision I’d made was bound to be a sound one. It was a nice feeling. 1. When he first became a resident, Dr. Nolen had trouble going to sleep because ________.(1.0分) A.He was used to spending the night in hospital. B.He had no choice on matters of shifts. C.He wanted to accumulate experience. D.He had just completed his residency. 2. In the last month of his residency, Dr. Nolen no longer dwelt on his decision once it had been made. This was because _________.(1.0分) A.he had gained confidence in himself B.he could live with his mistakes now C.he no longer made mistakes in judgment D.both a and b 3. At the end of his residency the doctor ______.(1.0分) A.took his mistakes lightly B.was able to avoid any error C.was no longer afraid of making mistakes D.erred more frequently than before 4. Dr, Nolen says that self-confidence help him ______.(1.0分) A.when he is making a decision B.when he is performing an operation C.when he has made mistakes D.all of above 5. We can safely conclude from the text that ____.(1.0分) A.Dr. Nolen no longer finds his work exciting B.his life-long ambition is to be a surgeon C.now he feels ready to handle any surgical case D.he didn’t learn as much as he should have when he was in medical school.

2009年4月成人英语三级考试真题(A卷)及答案

2009年4月考试真题(A卷) Part I Reading Comprehension (30%) Directions:There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A,B,C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. Passage 1 Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage: I hear many parents complain that their teenage children are rebelling. I wish it were so. At your age you ought to be growing away from your parents. You should be learning to stand on your own feet. But take a good look at the present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are all taking the same way of showing that they disagree with their parents. Instead of striking out boldly on their own, most of them are holding one another's hands for reassurance (放心)。 They claim they want to dress as they please. But they all wear the same clothes. They set off in new directions in music. But they all end up listening to the same record. Their reason for thinking or acting in such a way is that the crowd is doing it. They have come out of their cocoon (茧)into a larger cocoon.. (76)It has become harder and harder for a teenager to stand up against the popularity wave and to go his or her own way. Industry has firmly carved out a market for teenagers. These days every teenager can learn from the advertisements what a teenager should have and be. This is a great barrier for the teenager who wants to find his or her own path. But the barrier is worth climbing over. The path is worth following. You may want to listen to classical music instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is collecting records. You may have some thoughts that you don't care to share at once with your classmates. Well,go to it. Find yourself. Be yourself. Popularity will come—with the people who respect you for who you are. That's the only kind of popularity that really counts. 1. The author's purpose in writing this passage is to tell______. A. readers how to be popular with people around B. teenagers how to learn to make a decision for themselves C. parents how to control and guide their children D. people how to understand and respect each other 2. According to the author, many teenagers think they are brave enough to act on their own,but in fact most of them______.
