二、完形填空。

"Mr Mazzella, what is the difference between a period(句号)and a comma(逗号)?" I was a young substitute teacher(代课老师) teaching English in a middle school. The regular teacher had called in sick and left a lesson plan going over the rules of 1 . I hated these rules and hardly understood them myself, even though I was a writer. The English language is one of the most 2 subjects in the world. As I looked at the textbook, I knew that even if I told this student all the different 3

about commas, he wouldn't remember them.

I was also in no mood for a long lesson. My mum had died just a few short weeks ago. I missed her so much. I wandered(徘徊) around feeling half 4 inside. All I wanted to do was to stay in bed, but my young family was struggling to get by and I knew I had to take every day of work I could. I looked at the textbook again but couldn't 5 it because my eyes were so watery. All at once, however, I remembered the rule of thumb(经验法则) I used whenever I was. writing something. "A period is the end of a sentence or a thought," I said. "A comma, on the other hand, is just a brief pause(暂停) before the sentence continues." When I finished saying this, my heart suddenly, felt 6 . I smiled and thought of my mum continuing in a place much brighter and happier than 7 I was in now.

That little moment of light helped me as I continued to miss my mum over the months and years to come. Recently, I remembered it once again when I saw this quote in a book I was reading, "Death is not a(n) 8 , only a comma."

Our lives are a sentence and a 9 that goes forever. Our 10 here is only part of it. Our death here is only a comma. Write your story with love.

三、阅读理解。

That morning, we noticed a cab following Sir Henry and Dr Mortimer in London. But who?

We went to Sir Henry's hotel. Holmes asked Dr Mortimer if anyone with a black beard lived in or near Baskerville Hall.

"Yes," said Dr Mortimer. "Barrymore."

"We must send a telegram to check whether Barrymore is in London or at Baskerville Hall," said Holmes.

Sir Henry said he wanted to go to Baskerville Hall.

"OK," said Holmes. "But you mustn't go alone. Watson can go with you."

Sir Henry and I agreed to take the 10:30 train on Saturday.

Holmes thought deeply on the way home: the story of the Hound, Sir Charles's death, the

strange letter, the missing boot and the black-bearded man. He sat in his room all the afternoon, smoking and thinking.

Just before dinner, a telegram arrived. It said, "Barrymore is at Baskerville Hall."

"That becomes a dead end, Watson. We will have to look for another way to go forward."

Just then the doorbell rang. It was the cab driver who drove the man with the black beard. "I got a message that you are asking for me," he said. "I've never had a complaint. I came here to ask you what you had against me!"

"No, no," said Holmes. "Instead, I'll give you money if you tell me about the man in your cab this morning. He watched this house at 10:00 and then told you to follow the two gentlemen."

The driver looked surprised and then answered, "The man said he was a detective and that I shouldn't tell anyone about him."

"It's serious, my friend, and you may be in trouble if you refuse to answer."

"His name was Sherlock Holmes," said the driver.

I'd never seen Holmes more surprised. Then he laughed, "He scored against me that time, Watson."

The driver told us everything he knew. Holmes gave him the money and sent him away. "This is a dangerous enemy, Watson."

四、信息还原。

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

"How are you?" is a nice question. It's a friendly greeting that people in the United States use. 1 It's a question that often doesn't need an answer. The person who asks "How are you?" expects to hear the answer "Fine" even if the person isn't fine. The reason is that "How are you?" isn't really a question and "Fine" isn't really an answer. 2

3 For example, when someone asks "Do you agree?", the other person may be thinking, "No, I don't. I think you are wrong." It isn't polite to disagree very strongly, so he or she might say, "I am not so sure." This is a nicer way to say that, you don't agree with someone.

People don't say exactly what they are thinking either when they finish talking to other people. For example, many conversations over the phone end when one person says "I've got to go now", or the person who wants to hang up gives an excuse such as "Someone is at door" or "Something is burning on the stove". 4 The person who wants to hang up simply doesn't want to talk any more, but it isn't polite to say so. An excuse is polite, and it doesn't hurt the other person's feelings.

Whether they are greeting each other, talking about an opinion or ending a conversation, people often don't say exactly what they are thinking. 5 And it's part of the game of
