For American farmers, 2004 was a good year. That was because the total farm earnings were estimated (估计) at 74,000 million dollars for the year. That means the average(平均的) income of each farm was about 71,000 dollars, or an increase of about three percent from the year before.

However, the growth in earnings depended on the size of the farm. Large farms had increased earnings of six and one-half percent. Smaller farms saw growth in earnings of less than three percent.

Part of American farm income came from the federal (联邦的) government. The Department of Agriculture reports that about thirty-nine percent of farmers accepted some kind of aid(援助), or subsidy in 2003. Reports say the total amount of farm aid paid last year is estimated at 15,700 million dollars.

An organization called the Environmental Working Group keeps information on all farm subsidies (补贴,津贴)paid by the government. The group examined subsidies between 1995 and 2003.

It says ten percent of farms received seventy-two percent of government subsidies during that nine-year period. The group says big farms that are organized as corporations (公司) or partnership businesses receive the most aid. It says the big farms receive more aid, even when they are more profitable(盈利的) than smaller family farms.

Critics(评论家) say farm subsidies are costly and wasteful. Critics also note that subsidies go only to growers of widely traded crops, like corn, cotton, wheat and soybean.

But many farmers, including the ones who only receive a few thousand dollars a year, support the subsidy programs. They say small farming communities in states like Minnesota, Nebraska, and South Dakota would not survive without the aid.

30. From paragraph I, what is the probable number of American farms?

A. about 10 million.

B. about1 million.

C. about 10 thousand.

D. about 100 thousand.

31. Why was 2004 a good year for American farmers?

A. Big farms were organized as partnership businesses in 2004.

B. The federal government gave American farmers more aid in 2004.

C. American far mers’ earnings increased a lot in 2004.

D. The federal government reduced farmers’ taxes in 2004.

32. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A. All American farmers can get the government aid.

B. Only big farms can get the government aid.

C. Only profitable farms can get the government aid.

D. Farmers growing crops like corn and cotton may get the government aid easily.

A survey conducted by the four countries said that compared with their peers(同龄人) in Japan, the US and the Republic of Korea, Chinese high school students have the longest study hours.

The survey, released(发布)by the China Youth and Children Research Center (CYCRC) on Monday, was jointly conducted with institutions in the four countries in September—October of 2008. It covers nearly 4 000 students in senior high schools and vocational (职业的)high schools in the four countries.

About 78.3 percent of Chinese students said they spend more than eight hours at school and 56.7 percent said they study at least two more hours each day at home. By contrast, only 24.7 percent of their peers in the US, 20.5 percent in Japan and 15.4 percent in Korea study more than two hours after school.

Around 60 percent of all students surveyed said their burden for studies was the heaviest; however, the Japanese felt their burden was the worst with respondents(应答者) reaching 79.2 percent.

Among the five biggest headaches for young people in the four countries were: too many lessons and too much homework ranked first, followed by a boring leisure life, unsatisfied appearance, little time for exercise and making friends, and no spare money.

But I also want you to understand that realizing your dreams comes from hard work, some good luck and good timing. Here are some words of wisdom for you as you make your way in the world, from an entrepreneur (企业家) and from your mama. 1. Be open-minded to changing your path along the way In high school, I wanted to be a politician. I left my hometown and went off to college in Washington,DC. There, I discovered that I loved to support women. It taught me that I’m creative, a strong leader and great at marketing. As a result, I moved on to be the head of a national health-care nonprofit. Becoming a mother while in that job opened my mind to launching a breast pump bag (储奶袋) business. Now I run a highly successful company that I started up on my own. I'm not a politician! 2. Failure is critical to your success Failure can be heartbreaking. But I will tell you that every failure I’ve had along the way has absolutely made me better. Failing the big math exam in high school and going to summer school was embarrassing. I eventually passed, and I’ve never failed an exam again. I learned from that experience to ask for help. Now, I ask for help in business all the time. I’m proud to be a role model to you as a mom and an entrepreneur. I hope I inspire you to believe that you can be anything you want. It will be my pleasure to watch your lives unfold before my eyes. Love, Your mom 21. In the writer’s opinion, what does it take to realize one’s dream? A. Failure, hard work and good timing. B. People tend to pay attention to the shoes they and others wear.” Medical Daily notes that the number of detailed personality traits (特质) detected in the study include a person's general age, income, political tendency, and other personality traits, including someone's emotional stability. Lead researcher Omri Gillath said the judgments were based on the style, cost, color and condition of someone's shoes. In the study, 63 students from the University of Kansas looked at pictures showing 208 different pairs of shoes worn by the study's participants.
