ladies and gentlemen , good afternoon! i?m very glad to stand here and give you
a short speech. today my topic is “youth”. i hope you will like it , and found the
importance in your youth so that more cherish it. first i want to ask you some questions:

2、 how do you master your youth? youth
youth is not a time of life, it is a state of mind ; it is not rosy cheeks , red
lips and supple knees, it is a matter of the emotions : it is the freshness ; it is
the freshness of the deep springs of life . youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite ,
for adventure over the love of ease. this often exists in a man of 60 more than a
boy of 20 . nobody grows old merely by a number of years . we grow old by deserting
our ideals.
years wrinkle the skin , but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul . worry ,
fear , self –distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust . whether 60 of 16 , there is in every human being ?s heart the lure of wonders,
the unfailing childlike appetite of what?s next and the joy of the game of living .
in the center of your heart and my heart there?s a wireless station : so long as it
receives messages of beauty , hope ,cheer, courage and power from men and from the
infinite, so long as you are young . when the aerials are down , and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism
and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old ,even at 20 , but as long as your
aerials are up ,to catch waves of optimism , there is hope you may die young at 80. that?s all !

my favorite color 我最喜欢的颜色
blue has always been my favorite color, and i think it will always continue to
be so.
i have several reasons for liking this color best. first, it is a very soothing
color and makes people happy. how do people feel when they wake up to day when the
sky is a dirty grey? sad and gloomy. but when the sky is a deep blue, good cheer and
joy enters our hearts.
another reason why i am most partial to blue is that it is the color of oceans
and rivers and lakes on a sunny day. whenever i go swimming, i feel as though i were
reborn.
i have also heard that in english, the term “true blue” means to be faithful.
as i have a great respect for the quality of faithfulness, this is one more reason
for my liking blue so much.

我有几个最喜欢这种颜色的理由。第一，它是一种使人平和、快乐的颜色。当人们睡醒

i remember that when i was in my teens, i used to rebel at many of the “do’
s” and “don’ts” my parents used to dictate to me. for example, when i kept on
playing jazz records on the record player, my father used to condemn such music as
sheer noise and replace them with disks of classical music that i always considered
extremely dull.
my mom and dad were also very particular about the friends i went out with, always
quoting the maxim the “one rotten apple could ruin a whole barrel of apples.” when
i insisted that i sleep with my pet dog peppy, they immediately said no because they
thought that i would be bitten by fleas. these are just a few examples of many of the things that i thought my parents
were unreasonable about. today, however, i am also the father of a boy of fifteen,
and i find that i, too, am pressuring my son with a lot of rules and regulations that
he seems to find hard to swallow. the other day, i noticed that my son’s hair was
altogether too long, so i told him to go to the barber’s and get it trimmed short.
ordinarily, he is fairly obedient, but this time he put his foot down.
“what’s wrong with long hair?” he said. “all my buddies have long hair. and
besides, it’s my own hair, isn’t it? i don’t think you have the authority to order
me to cut it short, even if you’re my father!”
when i was a boy, if i had spoken with such impertinence to my father, i know
that he would have given me a good thrashing. but i suddenly realized that we are
now living in a more liberal world, and that my son’s insistence on wearing his hair
long was merely an instance of the generation gap that existed between us. so i
relented, and so he still wears his hair long.

记得我十几岁时，我总是反抗父母指定我做及不要我做的许多事。例如，当我用唱机听
爵士唱片时，父亲总指责这种音乐只是噪音，而换上我一直认为是最沉闷的古典音乐唱片。

当我坚持要和我的小狗佩比一起睡，他们马上说“不行”，因为他们认为我会被跳蚤给咬了。

我发现自己也用一大堆我儿子似乎觉得难以忍受的规定来压迫他。前几天，我注意到我儿子
的头发实在太长了，所以便叫他到理发店去修短。平常他是很听话的，但这次他坚持。“长
头发有什么不对？”他说，“我所有的朋友都留长头发，况且，这是我自己的头发，不是吗？
我认为你没权力命令我把它剪短，即使你是我父亲。”
小时候，如果我对父亲讲话这么无礼，我知道会招来一顿好打。但是我突然了解到我们
现在是生活在一个更自由的世界。我儿子坚持留长发，只是存在于我们之间的代沟的一例。
因此我态度变温和了，也因此他现在还留着长发。

i was born in the countryside near kaohsiung and i came up to taipei when i was
still a lad of twelve. seven years have elapsed since then, and just recently, i

平凡的善行就是一些我们在日常生活当中所做的、简单的好事。不只对我们的亲友，结

我们每天看报，常得知富有的慈善家所作“伟大的善行”。他们捐很多的钱盖学校、图书
馆、免费为穷人看病的医院、孤儿院等等。当然这值得民众赞美的慈善行为。但我认为，那
些没受到大众传播媒介褒奖或赞扬、具有服务大众热忱的市民所作较小的善行，一样值得赞
赏。我认为在上帝眼中，一个好心的白领阶级，即使在工作一天后极度疲惫，在挤满通勤
者的火车上让位给老弱或残障者，也一样值得赞美，甚至比那些捐一百万元建造一座新的老
人院的亿万慈善家更值得表扬。
在任何国家的大城市，居民的共同倾向就是“自扫门前雪”。对于那些无法赶上这种快速

learning english is like building a house. laying a strong foundation(n.地基 )
is the first and most important step. in other words, you should read and speak english
every day. memorizing new words and phrases in also helpful. like building a house,
learning english takes some time. so don’t be impatient(不耐烦的). remember, “rome
wasn’t built in a day”.
3.just do it 马上去做
many people put off until tomorrow what they can do today. they always look for
excuses to postpone（拖延）doing something .in the end, it never gets done. if we
leave things undone, we will eventually（最后） worry. this will then cause unnecessary
stress（压力0. therefore, if you have this bad habit, it’s best to get rid of it
and do things as soon as possible.
4.a balanced diet 均衡饮食
some people eat to live, but there are others who live to eat. to live a long
and healthy life, we must learn to have a balanced diet. a balanced diet simply means
a bit of everything. a diet which includes meat, fish, vegetables and fruit is, of
course, ideal. if you watch your diet, then you won’t have to suffer the pain of
going on a diet.
5.be thoughtful 体谅人
being thoughtful(体谅人)simply means thinking of others before yourself. what
you say or do will have an effect on others. so it is important that you think before
you say or do anything. in this way, you can avoid hunting other’s feelings. moreover,
a thoughtless act or remark can spoil a perfect relationship. smoking is bad in that it is harmful to one’s health. in spite of the fact that
doctors have even warned that it causes canner, people still keep on smoking. smoking, there are laws against cigarette advertising and smoking in public
places. this is praiseworthy except that western countries are now selling cigarettes
in the east in greater numbers than ever. that they are doing this is immoral, don’
t you think?
7.don’t rely on luck运气不可靠
passing exams is every student’s dream. failing them is their nightmare. so,
to realize their dreams, many students try anything. they even go to fortune tellers,
buy lucky charms and follow old customes. in korea(朝鲜)，many students bury something personal in the university they want
to enter. they believe that these things will act as magnets and “pull” them into
the university. whether it works or not, nobody really knows. at least it does ease
the students’ minds about passing exams. remember, though, you can’t always rely
on luck. there is no substitute for hard work.
8.a sense of security 安全感
some people take the view that something in life we have to take chances in order
to make progress. i admire such people. it certainly takes courage to take risks.
maybe it’s due to my upbringing, but i am the type who likes to play it safe. people like me believe in the saying, “a bird in the hand is worth two in the
bush. conservative as it may be, it keeps me out of trouble. i must confess, however,
that such a lifestyle may, at times, be boring. admittedly, my life is not half as colorful or exciting as other people’s, but

begin to review my lessons. i go to school at seven o’clock. after school is over, i return home. we usually have supper at seven o’clock. then i begin to do my homework. i want to finish it before i go to bed.

reason why our parents always encourage us to read more books. reading is a good thing, but we must pay great attention to the choice of books.
it is true that we can derive benefits from good books. however, bad books will do

and clear. he must study hard and store up knowledge so as to serve his (the) country
in the future. if every student can do according to what i said, the country will
certainly be rich and powerful.

定理。一个学生如何才能爱国呢？我发觉答复很简单明了。他必须用功读书并积储知识

an english proverb says that time is money. i consider it (this) wrong. why?
because we all know that we can earn money be work but can not in any way get back
time (in anyway). for this reason, we may (can) say that time is more valuable than
money.
many people do not know the value of time. it (this) is indeed a great pity. we
must bear (keep) in mind that wasting time is equal to wasting your life.

if you want to ask me why we should study english, my answer will be simple and
clear. now let me enumerate the reasons one by one in the following. in the second place, most valuable books, newspapers and magazines are written
in english. if you wish (hope) to get knowledge, you must learn english.
如果你要问我们为什么我们要学英文。我的答复很简单明了。现在让我来把我的理由一

the tea party began at half past six. there were cold drinks and refreshments.
we ate, talked and laughed. we felt that we were the happiest men in the world. time passed quickly. in a twinkling, the clock on the wall struck nine. we could
not but say ―good-bye‖ to one another.

some of us always spend sundays aimlessly. we can seldom derive profits from the
valuable hours (time) of sundays. this is indeed a great pity. though sundays are
set aside as a day for rest, we must make good use of them. we know that our school lessons are usually not sufficient. we should often
utilize sundays to read reference books. in this way we will increase our knowledge.
besides, we must be engaged in sports or outing so as to strengthen our bodies.
我们许多人终是把星期日毫无目的地消度掉。这确实是十分可惜。我们很少能从星期日
的宝贵时光中获得益处。虽然星期日是被指定为一个休息的日子，但是我们却应好好利用它。
我们知道我们学校的功课通常是不够的。我们应时常利用星期日来阅读参考书。如此我们的

第十二天：honesty is the best policy 诚为上策
there is an english proverb which says (saying) ―honesty is the best policy.‖
it signifies the importance of honesty. there is no enumerating the evils of dishonesty here. in a word, a dishonest man
will be looked down upon by others and (be) regarded as a public enemy.
英国有一句谚语说“诚为上策”。它说明了诚的重要性。
诚的益处是什么？如果你对他人诚实，他们也会对你诚实作为报答。当你忧悉的时候，
他们会安慰你。当你是处在困难中的时候，他们会帮助你。
无法在这里数述不诚实的害处。一言以蔽之，一个不诚实的人会被人看轻的而且被看作

第十三天：how exercise helps 运动的利益
if our bodies are not strong, our spirit to do things will certainly be quite
dull. and at the same time, we are lack of energy (ies) to study. diseases will only
attack the weak, but not the strong. why are our bodies not strong? because we
do not pay attention to exercise. for this reason, we students must often take
different kinds (sorts) of exercise in the gym. exercise helps us (to) strengthen our bodies and avoid disease. it also teaches
us cooperation, for most exercise is played by team.
如果我们的身体不强壮，我们做事的精神一定会十分迟钝。而且同时，我们也缺少足够
的精力来读书。疾病只为侵击体弱的人而不是强壮的人。

i am always interested in traveling. my reasons are quite (extremely) simple and
clear. if anybody is not satisfied with my viewpoint(s), i shall be greatly surprised
at his ways of thinking.
in the first place, traveling increases our knowledge. only by traveling can we
see （因为用（only）开头，主动词须颠倒）things outside our home town. in the second place, traveling is good to our health. while we are traveling,
we usually exercise our bodies. in conclusion, i earnestly hope that everybody must seize (grasp at) the
opportunity of traveling. 我对旅行终是感觉有趣。我的理由非常简单时了。如果任何
人对我的观点不满意的话，我将对他的想法会大大吃惊。
旅行增加我们的知识。只有藉旅行我们可以看到我们故乡以外的东西。

第十五天：how to be a good citizen 如何做一个好公民
the first duty of a good citizen is to love his country. he is to (must) be ready
to sacrifice even his own life for the country. his second duty is to obey the law and help the government (to) maintain order.
if everybody can do so, the country will be rich and strong (powerful).
我的志向是做一个好公民以便能给国家效力。然而，做一个好公民不是一件容易的事情。
他有许多责任要尽。
