1.Can you find five sentences in the reading passage that contain prep+whom/which attributive clauses ? Underline them.

2.(※学习建议)根据所列例句,理解介词+which/whom引导的定语从句。

(1)注意关系代词的选择

①This is the classroom in which we studied last year.

这就是我们去年在里面学习的教室。

②There are sixty students in our class,twenty of whom are girls.

我们班有六十学生,其中二十个是女生。

(2)注意介词的选取

在介词+关系代词引导的定语从句中,应根据以下几点选取介词:

①根据从句所修饰的先行词的需要来确定介词的使用。

This is the factory in which he works.

这就是他工作的工厂。(in the factory在工厂)

This is the farm on which he works.

这就是他工作的农场。(on the farm 在农场)

②根据从句中谓语动词搭配的需要来确定介词的使用。

The car on which he spent 240,000 yuan is made in Shanghai.

他花二十四万元买的车是上海造的。(to spend money on sth.)

The car for which he paid 240,000 yuan is made in Shanghai.

他花二十四万元买的车是上海造的。(to pay money for sth.)

③根据主从句搭配关系的需要来确定句中介词的使用。

I don’t know the student with whom Mary quarrelled yesterday.

我不认识昨天与玛丽争吵的学生。(to quarrel with sb.)

I don’t know the thing about which they quarrelled yesterday.

我不知道昨天他们为之争吵的那件事。(to quarrel about sth.)

(3)注意关系词的替换

关系副词可以替代介词+which/whom结构。

①where可以替代to/at/from/in which。如:We have visited the city where/in which

John Denver was born.

②when可以替代during/at/in/on which。如:I will never forget the year when/in

which I left home.

③why可以替代for which。如:The reason why/for which he left the band was that

he hated the busy life.

★注意:名词+of +关系代词引导定语从句时,可用whose +名词替换。

I will talk to those students the homework of whom hasn’t been done.

我要和没完成作业的同学谈话。(可用whose homework替换the homework of whom)

(4)注意不能拆开的动词短语

要注意有些动词短语不能拆开使用。这样的动词短语常用的有:look after,look into,look forward to,look for,take care of,depend on,listen to等。

The babies(whom)the nurses are looking after are very healthy.

护士正在照看的婴儿都很健康。

(5)注意介词+where引导的定语从句

有时我们可以见到介词+where引导的定语从句,此时要和介词+which引导的定语从句从意思上加以区别。

They stood on the top of the building,from where they could see the whole city.

他们站在楼顶上,从那儿能看到整个城市。(from where 相当于from on the top of the building,而不是from the building)
