的.原文:

It is hard to eulogize any man--to capture in words not just the facts and the dates that make a life,

but the essential truth of a person--their private joys

and sorrows;the quiet moments and unique qualities that

illuminate someone’s soul. How much harder to do so

for a giant of history, who moved a nation toward justice, and in the process moved billions around the world.Born during World War I,far from the corridors

of power,a boy raised herding cattle and tutored by the

elders of his Thembu tribe,Madiba would emerge as the

last great liberator of the20th century.Like Gandhi,

he would lead a resistance movement--a movement that

at its start had little prospect for success.Like Dr.

King,he would give potent voice to the claims of the oppressed and the moral necessity of racial justice. He would endure a brutal imprisonment that

began in the time of Kennedy and Khrushchev, and reached

the final days of the Cold War.Emerging from prison,

without the force of arms,he would--like Abraham

Lincoln--hold his country together when it threatened

to break apart. And like America’s Founding Fathers,

he would erect a constitutional order to preserve freedom

for future generations--a commitment to democracy and

rule of law ratified not only by his election, but by his

willingness to step down from power after only one term.

Given the sweep of his life, the scope of his accomplishments, the adoration that he so rightly earned,

it’s tempting I think to remember Nelson Mandela as an

icon, smiling and serene, detached from the tawdry

affairs of lesser men.But Madiba himself strongly

resisted such a lifeless

portrait.(Applause.)Instead,Madiba insisted

on sharing with us his doubts and his fears;his miscalculations along with his victories.“I am not

a saint,”he said,“unless you think of a saint as a

sinner who keeps on trying.”

Isn’t it ridiculous that you want a horse to run fast without eating grass(while you don’t graze it)?

译文:no investigation,no right to speak

译文:emphases should be put(laid)on the popularization of compulsory edu, active developing of vocational education and adult edu moderate optimize

译文:hand in

Red with cold

译文:the monk may run away but can’t the temple

You can run but you can’t hide

译文:dad, even if you won’t think of yourself

译文:those who

Break a new ground

译文:after you studying for three to five years, you will be proficient in English

For actually there is no roads on the earth to begin with

Within the span of a hundred years, in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, a tide of emigration—one of the great folk wanderings of history—swept from Europe to America. 46) This movement, driven by powerful and diverse motivations, built a nation out of a wilderness and, by its nature, shaped the character and destiny of an uncharted continent. 47) The United States is the product of two principal forces—the immigration of European peoples with their varied ideas, customs, and national characteristics and the impact of a new country which modified these traits. Of necessity, colonial America was a projection of Europe. Across the Atlantic came successive groups of Englishmen, Frenchmen, Germans, Scots, Irishmen, Dutchmen, Swedes, and many others who attempted to transplant their habits and traditions to the new world. 48) But, the force of geographic conditions peculiar to America, the interplay of the varied national groups upon one another, and the sheer difficulty of maintaining old-world ways in a raw, new continent caused significant changes. These changes were gradual and at first scarcely visible. But the result was a new social pattern which, although it resembled European society in many ways, had a character that was distinctly American. 49) The first shiploads of immigrants bound for the territory which is now the United States crossed the Atlantic more than a hundred years after the 15th- and 16th-century explorations of North America. In the meantime, thriving Spanish colonies had been established in Mexico, the West Indies, and South America. These travelers to North America came in small, unmercifully overcrowded craft. During their six- to twelve-week voyage, they subsisted on barely enough food allotted to them. Many of the ship were lost in storms, many passengers died of disease, and infants rarely survived the journey. Sometimes storms blew the vessels far off their course, and often calm brought unbearably long delay. “To the anxious travelers the sight of the American shore brou ght almost inexpressible relief.” said one recorder of events, “The air at twelve leagues’ distance smelt as sweet as a new-blown garden.” The colonists’ first glimpse of the new land was a sight of dense woods. 50) The virgin forest with its richness and variety of trees was a veritable real treasure-house which extended from Maine all the way down to Georgia. Here was abundant fuel and lumber. Here was the raw material of houses and furniture, ships and potash, dyes and naval stores.

Whichever it is, you know every twist and turn like the back of your hand. 其次“know sth like the back of your hand”的英文释义为: to have very good and detailed knowledge of something,即对某件事情非常了解、了如指掌。 The consequence is that you perceive that the trip has taken less time than it actually has.

An outline of American history(1954)(《美国历史纲要(1954年英文版)》),是其中一章The Colonial Period(殖民时期)的节选。 46) This movement, driven by powerful and diverse motivations, built a nation out of a wilderness and, by its nature, shaped the character and destiny of an uncharted continent. 重点词组:out of a wilderness(摆脱荒凉),by its nature(就其本质而言,从本质来说),uncharted(未知的;图上未标明的)。 driven by powerful and diverse motivations是后置定语,修饰movement;out of a wilderness是后置定语,修饰nation;of an uncharted continent是后置定语,修饰character and destiny。 47) The United States is the product of two principal forces—the immigration of European peoples with their varied ideas, customs, and national characteristics and the impact of a new country which modified these traits. 重点词组:product(产物),principal(主要的;首要的),peoples(民族),impact(影响) 结构分析:句子的主干是The United States is the product of two principal forces,破折号解释说明forces。of European peoples with their varied ideas, customs, and national characteristics是后置定语,修饰immigration;of a new country which modified these traits是后置定语,修饰impact,其中包含一个定语从句which modified these traits,修饰country。 48) But the force of geographic conditions peculiar to America, the interplay of the carried national groups upon one another, and the sheer difficulty of maintaining old-world ways in a raw, new continent caused significant changes. 主语1中,of geographic conditions peculiar to America是后置

1、Being a man has always been dangerous. There are about 105 males born for every 100 females, but this ratio drops to near balance at the age of maturity, and among 70-year-olds there are twice as many women as men. But the great universal of male mortality is being changed. Now, boy babies survive almost as well as girls do. This means that, for the first time, there will be an excess of boys in those crucial years when they are searching for a mate. More important, another chance for natural selection has been removed. Fifty years ago, the chance of a baby (particularly a boy baby) surviving depended on its weight. A kilogram too light or too heavy meant almost certain death. Today it makes almost no difference. Since much of the variation is due to genes, one more agent of evolution has gone. 2、There is another way to commit evolutionary suicide: stay alive, but have fewer children. Few people are as fertile as in the past. Except in some religious communities, very few women has 15 children. Nowadays the number of births, like the age of death, has become average. Most of us have roughly the same number of offspring. Again, differences between people and the opportunity for natural selection to take advantage of it have diminished. India shows what is happening. The country offers wealth for a few in the great cities and poverty for the remaining tribal peoples. The grand mediocrity of today — everyone being the same in survival and number of offspring — means that natural selection has lost 80% of its power in upper-middle-class India compared to the tribes. 3、For us, this means that evolution is over; the biological Utopia has arrived. Strangely, it has involved little physical change. No other species fills so many places in nature. But in the past 100,000 years —even the past 100 years —our lives have been transformed but our bodies have not. We did not evolve, because machines and society did it for us. Darwin had a phrase to describe those ignorant of evolution: they "look at an organic being as a savage looks at a ship, as

(定语从句较短,结构简单) He who has never tasted what is bitter does not know what is sweet. Space and oceans are the new world which scientists are trying to explore. Although he lacks experience, he has enterprise and creativity, which are decisive in achieving success in the area. He insisted on buying another house, which he had no use for. In our factory, there are many people who are much interested in the new invention. There is a man downstairs who wants to see you.

Think about driving a route that’s very familiar. It could be your commute to work, a trip into town or the way home. Whichever it is, you know every twist and turn like the back of your hand. On these sorts of trips it’s easy to lose concentration on the driving and pay little attention to the passing scenery. The consequence is that you perceive that the trip has taken less time than it actually has. This is the well-travelled road effect: people tend to underestimate the time it takes to travel a familiar route. The effect is caused by the way we allocate our attention. When we travel down a well-known route, because we don’t have to concentrate much, time seems to flow more quickly.

Within the span of a hundred years, in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, a tide of emigration -one of the great folk wanderings of history-swept from Europe to America. 46) This movement, impelled (命题人改写为driven) by powerful and diverse motivations, built a nation out of a wilderness and, by its nature, shaped the character and destiny of an uncharted continent. 47) The United States is the product of two principal forces-the immigration of European peoples with their varied ideas, customs, and national characteristics and the impact of a new country which modified these distinctly European cultural(命题人删除了这三个 词)traits. Of necessity, colonial America was a projection of Europe. Across the Atlantic came successive groups of Englishmen, Frenchmen, Germans, Scots, Irishmen, Dutchmen, Swedes, and many others who attempted to transplant their habits and traditions to the new world. 48) But, inevitably,(命题人删掉了这个词) the force of geographic conditions peculiar to America, the interplay of the varied national groups upon one another, and the sheer difficulty of maintaining old-world ways in a raw, new continent caused significant changes. These changes were gradual and at first scarcely visible. But the result was a new social pattern which, although it resembled European society in many ways, had a character that was distinctly American.

It could be your commute to work, a trip into town or the way home. Whichever it is, you know every twist and turn like the back of your hand. On these sorts of trips it’s easy to zone out from the actual(命题人改编为:lose concentration on the) driving and pay little attention to the passing scenery. And afterwards, when we come to think back on it, we can’t remember the journey well because we didn’t pay much attention to i t. So we assume it was proportionately(命题人删掉了这个词) shorter.
