Lexicology (Lecture Four)

2011.9.22

The structure of a word

Word is not an unanalysible unit, it can be analyzed. e.g. …M an?can not be broken down into any smaller unit, but …manly? can. Word is the minimum free form (最小的自由使用单位).

1. 词素morpheme

Morpheme: the minimum meaningful unit. 最小的意义单位. There are two types of morphemes:

Free morpheme: the morphemes that can occur alone可以独立使用, e.g. dog, nation, close

Bound morpheme:the morphemes that cannot occur independently尽管能表达意

义,但不能独立使用,至少要与另外的一个形位结合才能

使用, e.g. the word distempered has three morphemes,

namely, dis-, temper- and -ed, of which temper is a free

morpheme, dis- and -ed are two bound morphemes. Allomorph: 词素有变体,如自由词素take的变体为took和taken;粘着词素in-的变体为il-, im-, ir等。

2. Root and affix

A root is the base form of word that can not further be analysed without total loss of identity. That is to say, it is the part of the word left when all the affixes are removed.

Affix:affixes add meaning to the root

roots may be bound or free but affixes are always bound.

Inflectional and derivational affix

Inflectional affix: They only carry relevant grammatical information. An inflectional affix serves to express such meanings as plurality, tense, and the comparative or superlative degree. e.g. plural. Thus, book and books are both nouns referring to the same kind of entity.

Derivational affix: They are so called because when they are added to another morpheme, they “derive” a new word either by changing the meaning of the base to which they are attached or by changing the grammatical category (part of speech) of the base. The derivational affixes may be further classified as prefix and suffix.

Example: The word "unbreakable" has three morphemes: "un-", a bound morpheme; "break", a free morpheme; and "-able", a free morpheme. "un-" is also a prefix, "-able" is a suffix. Both "un-" and "-able" are affixes.

Summary:

1.Words are composed of morphemes.

2. Morphemes may be classified as free or bound.

3. Morphemes can also be classified into roots and affixes.

4 Affixes are classified into inflectional and derivational affixes. Derivational affixes are subdivided into prefixes and suffixes,

Major types of word-building

1. Affixation:

a process in which a free morpheme is combined with a bound morpheme, a prefix or a suffix.

Prefix: generally do not change part of speech of the word 不改变词的词性Suffix: change part of speech of the word

2. Conversion

Conversion is also referred to as Zero Derivation.

It is a process that can transfer a word belonging to one word class to another word class without any change of form, either in pronunciation or spelling.

3. Compounding 复合法

A word made in process which consists joining two or even more words to form a

new entity. A compound is the result of the process of putting together two (or more) individual words to form a complex word.

Compounding is perhaps the most common way of expanding the vocabulary of English. It allows users to combine two familiar words to form a new lexeme.

4. Back-formation 逆生法

Back-formation is process of word building by which elements are extracted from a complex word.

Burglar---to burgle

Helicopter---to helicopt

Mass-production—to mass-produce

Cozy---to coze

Browbeaten---to browbeat

5. Shortening 缩短法

What we get from shortening is a lesser unit. There is a trend in modern English to shorten words. Three ways of shortening

a. Clipping

The process by which one part in a word of two or more syllables is cut without changing its function.

Advertisement—ad

Examination---exam

b. initialism (abbreviation)

words formed from the initial letters of words which are pronounced as sequences of letters

e.g. EEC

c. acronyms

formed by the initial letters but are pronounced as a word.

e.g. UNESCO OPEC

6. Blending

Blending is the process of combining the first element of the first word and the last element of the second word. Blends are originally created for comic effect.

telecast (television broadcast)

motel (motor hotel), hotel

7. Onomatopoeia

(making words by echoing a sound that is linked to the thing we want to name) Classification (by Stephen Ullmann英国语言学家、语义学家奠基人)

Primary onomatopoeia (基本拟声词)

Secondary onomatopoeia (次要拟声词)

8. Words from Proper Names

Another minor word-formation process is the creation of new words from proper names. The transition from proper names to common nouns is a gradual one.

英语词汇学总结(细致)

Chapter 1Word-Structure 1. The definition of morpheme 1.1 What is the smallest meaningful linguistic unit of language?- morpheme What are words composed of? - Words are formed by morphemes. A word is the smallest unit that stands alone to communicate meaning. 1.2 What are the Chinese equivalents对应词of morpheme? 语素词素-形位 2.1 Morphemes may be classified into free and bound. Free morphemes, also called content morphemes, may constitute words by themselves. These morphemes have complete meanings in themselves and can be used as free grammatical units in sentences. So we may say that free morphemes are free roots. Bound morphemes = Bound root + affixes, known as grammatical morphemes, must appear with at least one other morpheme, either free or bound. Bound morphemes are chiefly found in derived words, e.g. recollection, idealistic, ex-prisoner 2.2 Morphemes may also be classified into roots (or root morphemes) and affixes (or affixational morphemes). Task: (1) Read the following words and find the root in each word. heart, hearten, dishearten, heartless, hearty, heartiness, sweetheart, heartbroken, kind-hearted, whole-heartedly. (2) What is your definition of root? A root is the part of the word-form which remains when all the affixes have been removed. (3) Is a root necessarily a free morpheme? Why? 2.2.1 Two types of roots - Free root In English, many roots are free morphemes, such as black in black, blackboard, blacksmith. - Bound root However, there are quite a number of roots which cannot exist on their own and thus belong to the class of bound morphemes. For example, ceive in receive, conceive, perceive, deceive; mit in permit, commit, submit; tain in retain, contain, maintain; cur in recur, occur, incur, etc. these roots cannot be used to form new words. 2.2.2 Two types of affixes Affix is a collective term for the type of formative (构词成分) that can be used only when added to another morpheme. - Inflectional affixes (or inflectional morphemes) serve to express the following meanings: (1) plurality: e.g. -s in chairs, pens; -es in boxes, tomatoes; en in oxen. (2) the genitive case: e.g. ’s in boy’s, children’s. (3) the verbal endings: for example, a. -(e)s in words like eats, teaches shows the third person singular present tense. b. -ing in words like eating, teaching shows the present participle or gerund. c. -(e)d in words like worked, saved shows the past tense or past participle. (4) the comparative and superlative degrees: e.g. -er in words like smaller, harder; -est in words like smallest, hardest. - Derivational affixes (or derivational morphemes)can be further divided into prefixes and suffixes. ?(1) Prefixes are affixes before the root, e.g: unjust, rewrite. As a rule, most prefixes modify the meaning of roots, but not their parts of speech.

But not all words which are produced by applying the rule are acceptable. The acceptability is gained only when the word have gained an institutional currency in the language. Therefore rules only provide a constant set of models from which new word are created from day to day. Rules themselves are not fixed but undergo changes to a certain extent. For instance, affixes and compounding processes may become productive at one time or lose their productivity. By word formation processes, we concentrate on productive or on productive rules. 《英语词汇学教程》论文(中文版)

英语词汇学论文(中文版) 单词记忆法细谈 一,读音规则记忆法 它就是按照元音字母、元音字母组合、辅音字母及辅音字母组合在开音节和闭音节的读音规律记忆。例如:ea,ee,er,ir,ur,or分别能发[i:][:][:]等。还有些固定的字母组合,例如:ing发[i],ly发[li],ty发[ti]和各种前缀、后缀,例如:a-,re-,un-,dis-,im-;-ed,-ing,-ly,-er,-or,-ful,-y等都有其比较固定的发音。掌握了这些规则,记单词时就不必一个字母一个字母地记忆了。 二.字母变化记忆法 英语单词中以某个单词为基础,加、减、换、调一个字母就成了另一个新单词。具体方法如下: 1.前面加字母。例如:is/his,ear/near/hear,read/bread 2.后面加字母。例如:hear/heart,you/your,plane/planet 3.中间加字母。例如:though/through,tree/three,for/four 4.减字母。例如:she/he,close/lose,star/tstar 5.换字母。例如:book/look/cook,cake/lake/wake/make/take 6.调字母(即改变字母顺序)。例如:blow/bowl,sing/sign,from/form 三.联想记忆法 在日常生活中可以根据所处的环境,所见到、所摸到的事物,联想相关的英语单词。例如:打球时联想到:ball,(play)basketball,(play)football,(play)volleyball,playground等等;吃饭时联想到:dining-room,(have)breakfast,(have)lunch,(have)supper等等;睡觉时联想到:bed,bedroom,gotobed,sleep,gotosleep,fallasleep等等。 前缀后缀词,如:unhappy, unhealthy, unfriendly, unlucky, worker, writer, visitor, us eless, careless, etc 2.按同义词或反义词归类 随着学生词汇量的增加,可逐渐进行此项归类。如:take off(脱下)与put on (穿上),safe(安全)与dangerous(危险);get to (到达)与arrive at\in(到达)与reach(到达)。3.按题材归类

初中英语词汇中常见的构词法

初中英语词汇中常见的构词法 1. 合成法 合成法至今保持着旺盛的生命力,在现代英语中不少新词都是借助原有的词合成的。 1)名词+名词→名词 basket(篮子)+ball(球)→basketball篮球book (书) +shop(商店) → bookshop书店 book(书) + store(商店) → bookstore书店house(房子) +work(劳动) → housework家务劳动 home(家庭) + work(工作) → homework家庭作业 2) 形容词+名词→名词 black(黑色的)+board(木板)→ blackboard黑板English(英国的)+man(人)→ Englishman英国人 loud(大声的)+speaker(说话者) → loudspeaker扬声器 3)动词的-ing形式+名词 dining room 餐厅drinking water 饮用水sewing machine 缝纫机 running water 自来水washing machine 洗衣机writing desk 写字桌 walking stick 拐杖writing paper 信纸 4)名词+动词的-ing形式 shoe-making 制作鞋子letter-writing 写信handwriting 书法 dressmaking 做裙子story-telling 讲故事central heating 中央供暖 注意:合成词的构成方式有3种: ①词与词之间加连字符“-”;②词与词合成一个词;③词与词分开; 3) 介词+名词→名词(或形容词) after(在后)+noon(正午) →afternoon下午under(在下面)+ground (地面) → underground地下的 4) 名词+过去分词→形容词 man(人)+made(做) → man-made人造的 5) 名词(形容词)+名词+ed→形容词 glass(玻璃)+topped(顶部的) →glass-topped玻璃罩着的kind(善良的)+hearted(心) →kind-hearted好心的6) 副词+名词→介词 in(里面)+side(边) →inside在内down(在下)+stairs(楼梯) →downstairs在楼下 2.

如basketball, life-long, face-to-face, blackboard。在英语发展的过程中,合成法在构词方面起到很大作用,为英语补充了大量词汇。复合词的后兹材料多数由基本词汇提供。合成词的含义多数可从字面看出,如以上各例,但其特定含义,则不受词中各个成分连接方式的影响,其写法由习惯而定,可用连接号,亦可不用。如mouth-filling(气势十足的),mouth-to-mouth method(口对口人工呼吸法)。合成词的含义往往由其各个成分的关系而定,各词之间意义千变万化,毫无规则可言,但实际上,对于其含义,从上下文就可以看出,且很少会产生误解。合成词可分为合成名词,合成形容词,合成动词等。 1.合成名词的主要构成方式有: ⑴.名词+名词,如news +paper= newspaper(报纸),class +room=classroom(教室); ⑵.形容词+名词,如black +board=blackboard(黑板),high +way=highway(公路); ⑶.动词+名词,如scare +crow=scarecrow(稻草人)。 2.合成形容词的主要构成方式: ⑴.名词+形容词,如color +blind= colorblind(色盲的),world +wide=worldwide(全世界范围的); ⑵.形容词+形容词,如bitter +sweet=bittersweet(又苦又甜的); ⑶.副词+形容词,如over +sensitive=oversensitive(过敏的)。 3.合成动词的主要构成方式: ⑴.副词+动词,如uphold(支持),under-line(在下面划线); ⑵.名词+动词,如sun-bathe(日光浴)。 4.合成代词的主要构成方式: ⑴.代词宾格或物主代词+self/selves,如ourselves(我们自己); ⑵.某些不定代词+body,如nobody, everybody。 5.合成副词的主要构成方式: ⑴.名词+名词,如sideways(横着); ⑵.形容词+名词,如meanwhile(同时); ⑶.介词+名词,如beforehand(事先)。 在英语合成词中,合成名词数量很多,而且可以按照既定规律自行构造新词。在学生掌握了一定的基础词汇后,可对一些合成词汇猜测词义,更有利于单词的记忆,扩大词汇量。 (二)派生法 在一个词的前面或后面加上前缀或后缀,从而构成一个新词的方法叫做派生法。
