When he thought of the past, my grandfather would sometimes show us photographs of himself at school. They were brown and faded, and it was hard to believe that the blurred figure of the little boy in the short trousers and socks could ever have been grandfather. Besides, he wore a cap — and the boys in the photographs wore caps pulled so far forward that half of their faces were obscured. When grandfather asked us to pick him out from the group, we would surely point to the wrong boy.

On one such occasion my younger sister, aged six, burst into tears when grandfather proudly guided her finger to the right boy. “How could that boy be you?”she cried. “He should have a beard.” We were, of course, all convinced that grandfathers should have beards, preferably white and bushy, like our own grandfather's.

“I was a good scholar,” grandfather would say, wagging his beard over the photographs. “I should have been top of the class if I hadn't had to get up at six every morning to milk the cows and chop the wood, and again when I came home from school.”

“But Saturdays? What did you do on Saturdays?”

“Saturdays, if it was fine, I'd be out all day in the fields with the men,” replied grandfather. “And if it was wet, I'd be helping my mother with odd jobs round the house. There wasn't much time for studying.”

We all tried hard to imagine what it would have been like to have been grandfather getting up at crack of dawn and never, obviously, having a moment for himself. It seemed we had learnt something from what grandfather had said about his childhood.

B.she was told which was the right boy before she herself could pick him out

C.other children did not agree with her that grandfather should have had a beard

D.she found grandfather in the photographs did not have a beard

3.When grandfather said,“I should have been top of the class”,he meant________.

A.if he had had more time for studying, he would have been the best in his class

B.he should have spent more time studying rather than playing ball games

C.his school days should not have been so hard and miserable

D.he could have never been the best student even if he had studied harder

4.In the last paragraph the author said,“We all tried hard to imagine” because________.

A.the figures of the boys in the photographs were small and blurred

Li Bai is regarded as the greatest romantic poet of the Tang Dynasty and a representative of the High Tang culture, combination of realistic Northern culture represented by Confucian (儒家的) philosophy and romantic Southern culture represented by Taoist philosophy. But he could neither realize his Confucian ideal to serve the country nor find spiritual freedom in Taoism, so he could only chant poetry and drink wine to drown his sorrow as described by Du Fu in Eight Immortal Drinkers. Here we see the tragedy (悲剧) of a genuine staying lonely on earth like an angel fallen from Heaven. His poetry is marked by male greatness in the Waterfall in Mount Lu Vie w ed from Afar, in which we see the mountain cloud from down below and the Silver River, Chinese name for the Milky Way, fall from on high, and heaven and earth seem to merge into one, that is the Chinese way of communion with nature. In his poetry we can find his love of nature, of freedom, of the people, of his friends, in short, of truth, good and beauty.

Li Bai is best known for the extraordinary imagination and striking Taoist imagery in his poetry, as well as for his great love for liquor.Like Du Fu, he spent much of his life travelling, although in his case it was because his wealth allowed him to, rather than because his poverty forced him.He is said to have drowned in the Yangtze River, having fallen from his boat while drunkenly trying to embrace (拥抱) the reflection of the moon.

5.What is this passage mainly about?

A.The introduction to a famous poet in Tang Dynasty — Li Bai.

D.he made the poems in which complaints and dissatisfaction could be shown

7.According to the last paragraph we know that ________.

A.Li Bai enjoyed drinking more liquor than anything else

B.Li Bai had a more extraordinary imagination than Du Fu

C.Li Bai spent much time on travel as well as Du Fu

D.Li Bai had to do that because he was very poor

For years, scientists have been puzzled by the mysterious “sailing stones” of Death Valley.

Located in California's Death Valley National Park, the heavy stones appear to move across the dried lake bed known as Racetrack Playa, leaving a trail (痕迹) behind them in the mud.

Scientists have tried to solve the puzzle of the sailing stones for many years. Some

researchers believed the strong winds that frequently blow across the vast lake bed could cause the rocks to slide across the ground. This and other theories were eventually disproved, leaving scientists without an explanation.

In 2006, Ralph Lorenz, a NASA scientist, took an interest in the mysterious sailing stones of Racetrack Playa.

Lorenz developed a kitchen-table model —using an ordinary Tupperware container —to show how the rocks might slide across the surface of the lake bed.

“I took a small rock and put it in a piece of Tupperware, and filled it with water so there was an inch of water with a bit of the rock st icking out, ” Lorenz said.

After putting the container in the freezer, Lorenz ended up with a small piece of ice with a rock embedded (嵌入) in it. By placing the ice-bound rock in a large tray (盘) of water with sand at the bottom, all he had to do was gently blow on the rock to get it to move across the water. And as the ice-embedded rock moved, it left a trail in the sand at the tray's bottom.

Lorenz's research team believed that under certain winter conditions in Death Valley, enough water and ice could form to float the rocks across the muddy bottom of Racetrack Playa in a light wind, leaving a trail in the mud as the rocks moved.

However, some visitors to Death Valley seem to prefer more mysterious explanations for the sailing stones.

“People always ask, ‘What do you think causes them to move?’But if you try to explain, they don't always want to hear the answers, ” park worker Alan van Valkenburg said. “People like a mystery — they like an unanswered question.”

9.For years, scientists had no idea ________.

A.where the stones came from

B.what caused the stones to move

C.whether the stones moved or not

D.when the stones were discovered

10.Before Ralph Lorenz's experiment, scientists' years of efforts to solve the puzzle seemed to be ________.

A.brave B.special

C.meaningless D.fruitless

11.Which of the following shows the right order of Lorenz's experiment?

a.freezing the container

b.putting a rock in the container

c.making the rock move in the tray

d.preparing a tray of water with sand in it

A.a-b-c-d B.a-d-b-c

C.b-a-d-c D.b-d-c-a

12.According to Alan van Valkenburg, some visitors to Death Valley ________.

A.prefer to see the puzzle unsolved

B.believe the answer given by Lorenz

C.care little about why the stones move

D.try to uncover the mystery themselves

When students and parents are asked to rate subjects according to their importance, the arts are unavoidably at the bottom of the list.Music is nice, people seem to say, but not important. Too often it is viewed as mere entertainment, but certainly not an education priority (优先). This view is shortsighted. In fact, music education is beneficial and important for all students.

Music tells us who we are. Because music is an expression of the beings who create it, it reflects their thinking and values, as well as the social environment it comes from. Rock music represents a lifestyle just as surely as does a Schubert song. The jazz influence that George Gershwin and other musicians introduced into their music is obviously American because it came from American musical traditions. Music expresses our character and values. It gives us identity as a society.

Music provides a kind of perception (感知) that cannot be acquired any other way. Science

can explain how the sun rises and sets. The arts explore the emotive (情感的) meaning of the same phenomenon. We need every possible way to discover and respond to our world for one simple but powerful reason: No one way can get it all.

The arts are forms of thought as powerful in what they communicate as mathematical and scientific symbols. They are ways we human beings “talk” to each other. They are the language of civilization through which we express our fears, our curiosities, our hungers, our discoveries, our hopes. The arts are ways we give to form our ideas and imagination so that they can be shared with others. When we do not give children access to an important way of expressing themselves such as music, we take away from them the meanings that music expresses.

Science and technology do not tell us what it means to be human. The arts do. Music is an important way we express human suffering, celebration, the meaning and value of peace and love.

So music education is far more necessary than people seem to realize.

13.According to Paragraph 1, students________.

A.regard music as a way of entertainment

B.disagree with their parents on education

C.view music as an overlooked subject

D.prefer the arts to science

14.In Paragraph 2, the author uses jazz as an example to________.

A.compare it with rock music

B.show music identifies a society

C.introduce American musical traditions

D.prove music influences people's lifestyles

15.What is the main idea of the passage?

A.Music education deserves more attention.

B.Music should be of top education priority.

C.Music is an effective communication tool.

D.Music education makes students more imaginative.

How do people analyze and solve worry problem? The answer is that we must equip ourselves to deal with different kinds of worries by learning the three basic steps of problem analysis. The three steps are:

Get the facts.

Why is it so important to get the facts? Unless you have the facts, you can't possibly attempt to solve your problem intelligently. Without the facts, all you can do is wandering around in confusion. It's not an easy job to get facts. When you are worried, your emotions are riding high.

16.________

When trying to get the facts, you can pretend that you are collecting this information not for yourself but for some other person. 17.________ You can also pretend that you are a lawyer preparing to agree. Try to get all the facts both on your side and the other side of the case. You will generally find the truth lies somewhere in between.

18.________

Whenever you are worried, write down the questions that make you worry. And write out all the various steps you could take and then the probable consequences of each step. For example, what am I worrying about? What can I do about it? Here is what I am going to do about it. After carefully weighing all the facts, you can calmly come to a decision.

Act on that decision.

19.________ How can you break the worry habit before it breaks you? Crowd worry out of your mind by keeping busy. Plenty of action is one of the best ways to cure worry. 20.________ If you know a situation is beyond your power, say to yourself:“It is so; it cannot be otherwise.”

Don't permit little things to ruin your happiness. Try to cultivate a mental attitude that will bring you peace and happiness.

A.Accept what cannot be avoided.

B.There comes a time when you must decide and never look back!

C.But here are two ideas that can help you see the facts in a clear and objective way.

D.Unless you take your action, all your fact finding and analysis are a sheer waste of energy.

E.Decide how much anxiety a thing may be worth.

F.This will help you to take a cold and fair view of the evidence.

G.Analyze the facts.

选修6 Unit 1 Art-Reading A SHORT HISTORY OF WESTERN PAINTING Art is influenced by the customs and faith of a people. Styles in Western art have changed many times. As there are so many different styles of Western art, it would be impossible to describe all of them in such a short text. Consequently, this text will describe only the most important ones, starting from the sixth century AD. The Middle Ages (5th to the 15th century AD) During the Middle Ages, the main aim of painters was to represent religious themes. A conventional artist of this period was not interested in showing nature and people as they really were. A typical picture at this time was full of religious symbols, which created feeling of respect and love for God. But it was evident that ideas were changing in the 13th century when painters like Giotto di Bondone began to paint religious scenes in a more realistic way. The Renaissance (15th to 16th century) During the Renaissance, new ideas and values graduallv replaced those held in the Middle Ages.People began to concentrate less on religious themes and adopt a more humanistic attitude to life. At the same time painters returned to classical Roman and Greek ideas about art. They tried to paint people and nature as they really were. Rich people wanted to possess t heir own paintings, so they could decorate their superb palaces and great houses. They paid famous artists to paint pictures of themselves, their houses and possessions as well as their activities and achievements. One of the most important discoveries during this period was how to draw things in perspective. This technique was first used by Masaccio in 1428. When people first saw his paintings, they were convinced that they were looking through a hole in a wall at a real scene. If the roles of perspective had not been discovered, no one would have been able to paint such realistic pictures. By coincidence, oil paints were also developed at this time, which made the colours used in paintings look richer and deeper. Without the new paints and the new technique, we would not be able to see the many great masterpieces for which this period is famous. Impressionism (late 19th to early 20th century) In the late 19th century, Europe changed a great deal. from a mostly agricultural society to a mostly industrial one. Many people moved from the countryside to the new cities. There were many new inventions and social changes. Naturally, these changes also led to new painting styles. Among the painters who broke away from the traditional style of painting were the Impressionists, who lived and worked in Paris.
