There is a story of a country where the rate of inflation is so high that clever people pay for a taxi ride before, instead of after the trip. The story may not be true, but inflation was almost that serious in Germany from July 1920 until December 1923 they were 50 billion percent higher——a rise of almost 2,500% a month.

There was so much paper money, and it had so little value, that people carried bags full of money around to pay for things. One woman tells the story of standing outside a shop with a basket full of 500,000 marks notes. She wanted to buy just one piece of meat and she hoped she had enough money. But when she was looking, a thief robbed her. He didn’t take her money but he threw it away and took the basket instead.

At first workers demanded to be paid every day, but as the situation became worse, they had to be paid twice a day. But they had to run out and spend the money at once, or it would lose its value. People bought anything that was for sale, but food was almost impossible to find. Farm workers refused to take money. They wanted to be paid in potatoes instead.

New policies ended the inflation in 1923, when the government introduced new money, but about half of the German people lost everything in those three and a half years.

Some people have it easy. When their children ask them what they do at work, they can give a simple, direct answer, “I put out fires,” or “I fix sick people,” or “I teach at

primary school.” As a theoretical physicist, I never had this luck. Society has come to expect many things from the physicists It used to be that we only had to discover the basic laws of the world and supply the techniques that would power the next Silicon Valley. With these expectations we were fairly comfortable: they are the sorts of things we think we know how to work. What makes us uncomfortable——and what makes it hard for us to tell our children what we’re up to ——is that in his century we have become, though unwillingly, great figures on questions such as “What is the nature of reality?”

We now deal with a whole new class of problems. We ask how the world began and what is the nature of matter. The answers we are coming up with are just not easy for the average person.

So, when physicists get out of their cars. In the morning, have a cup of coffee and sit down in front of their computers, they leave a familiar world and enter a place where things act in strange ways that are impossible for ordinary people to understand.

54. What’s the main idea of the passage?

A. Most people are expecting to know what physicists are doing.

B. society seems to know a bit about physicists’ work

C. It’s impossible for average people to know physicists’ work

D. Physicists are doing more and more difficult jobs.

55. According to the passage, in a way physicists are____________

A. comfortable

B. strange

C. unlucky

D. honest

56. According to what the writer says about physicists, we know that physicists

________.

A. live in two different worlds

B. are coming up with new answers to old questions

C. don’t have to tell people what they are doing

D. don’t like their career

57. From the passage we can conclude that theoretical physicists______________

A. only have to answer the basic questions about the world

B. have found it hard to make themselves popular

C. contributed to the new industry in Silicon Valley

D. have disappointed the expatiations of many people.

大学英语三级B级-阅读理解(三)

大学英语三级B级-阅读理解(三) (总分:25.00,做题时间:90分钟) 一、单项选择题(总题数:5,分数:25.00) Task 6 The sense of sound is one of our most important means of knowing what is going on around us. Sound has a wasted product, too, in the form of noise. Noise has been called unwanted sound. Noise is growing and it may get much worse before it gets any better. Scientists, for several years, have been studying how noise affects people and animals. They are surprised by what they have learned. Peace and quiet are becoming harder to find. Noise pollution is a threat that should be looked at carefully. There is a saying about it being so noisy that you can't hear yourself think. Doctors who study noise believe that we must sometimes hear ourselves think. If we don't, we may have headaches, other aches and pains, or even worse mental problems. Noise adds more tension (紧张) to a society that already faces enough stress. But noise is not a new problem. In ancient Rome, people complained so much about noise that the government stopped chariots (四轮马车) from moving through the streets at night! Ways of making less noise are now being tested. There are even laws controlling noise. We cannot return to the "good old days" of peace and quiet. But we can reduce noise--if we shout loudly enough about it.
