A

The interview has been going on for about 20 minutes and everything seems to be going well. Then, suddenly, the interviewer asks an unexpected question, “Which is more important, law or love?”

Job applicants in the West increasingly find themselves asked strange questions like this. And the signs are that this is beginning to happen in China.

Employers want people who are skilled, enthusiastic and devoted. So these are the qualities that any reasonably intelligent job applicant will try to show no matter what his or her actual feelings are.In response, employers are increasingly using the questions which try and show the applicant’s true personality.

The question in the first paragraph comes from a test called the Kiersey Temperament Sorter. It is an attempt to discover how people solve problems, rather than what they know. This is often called aptitude (天资)test.

According to Mark Baldwin of Alliance, many job applicants in China are finding this type of questions difficult.“When a Chinese fills out an aptitude test, he or she will think there is a right

answer but they may fail because they try to guess what the examiner wants to see.”

This is sometimes called the prisoner’s dilemma (窘境).Applicants are trying to act cleverly in their own interest, but they fail because they don’t understand what the interviewer is looking for.Remember that in an aptitude test, the correct answer is the honest answer.

56.What is the purpose of the passage?

A.To give a piece of advice for job interviewees.

B.To tell you how to deal with job interviews.

C.To advise you how to find a good job.

D.To describe an aptitude test.

57.Now employers want to hire workers ________.

A.who know much more than others B.who will work harder than others

C.who are able to solve the problems D.who are better educated than others 58.According to the writer, in an aptitude test, Chinese job applicants should ________.A.not tell the truth B.offer a complete answer

C.learn to tell what they really think D.find out what the examiner wants to know 59.From the passage we know that ________.

A.job applicants are always asked such questions

B.applicants should not act as cleverly as possible

C.more Chinese applicants fail to find a job

D.aptitude test is becoming world-wide popular

B

If women are mercilessly exploited(剥削)year after year, they have only themselves to blame. Because they tremble at the thought of being seen in public in clothes that are out of fashion, they are always taken advantage of by the designers and the big stores. Clothes which have been worn only a few times have to be put aside because of the change of fashion. When you come to think of it, only a woman is capable of standing in front of a wardrobe (衣柜) packed full of clothes and announcing sadly that she has nothing to wear.

Changing fashions are nothing more than the intentional creation of waste. Many women spend vast sums of money each year to replace clothes that have hardly been worn. Women who cannot afford to throw away clothing in this way, waste hours of their time altering the dresses they have. Skirts are lengthened or shortened; neck-lines are lowered or raised, and so on.

No one can claim that the fashion industry contributes anything really important to society. Fashion designers are rarely concerned with vital things like warmth, comfort and durability (耐用). They are only interested in outward appearance and they take advantage of the fact that women will put up with any amount of discomfort, as long as they look right. There can hardly be a man who hasn't at some time in his life smiled at the sight of a woman shaking in a thin dress on a winter day, or delicately picking her way through deep snow in high-heeled shoes.

When comparing men and men and women in the matter of fashion, the conclusions to be drawn are obvious. Do the constantly changing fashions of women's clothes, one wonders, reflect basic qualities of inconstancy and instability? Men are too clever to let themselves be cheated by fashion designers. Do their unchanging styles of dress reflect basic qualities of stability and reliability? That is for you to decide.

60.Designers and big stores always make money ________.

A.by mercilessly exploiting women workers in the clothing industry

B.because they are capable of predicting new fashions

C.by constantly changing the fashions in women’s clothing

D.because they attach great importance to quality in women’s clothing

61.To the writer, the fact that women change their old-fashioned dresses is seen as _________.

A.a quality of instability B.a waste of time

C.an expression of taste D.an expression of creativity

62.The writer would be less critical if fashion designers placed more stress on the ________of clothing.

A.cost B.appearance C.comfort D.suitability 63.According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.New fashions in clothing are created for the commercial exploitation of women.

B.The constant changes in women’s clothing reflect their strength of character.

C.The fashion industry makes an important contribution to society.

D.Fashion designs should not be encouraged since they are only welcomed by women. 64.By saying "the conclusions to be drawn are obvious" (Para. 4, Line 1-2), the writer means that _________.

A.women’s inconstancy in their choice of clothing is often laughed at

B.women are better able to put up with discomfort

C.men are also exploited greatly by fashion designers

D.men are more reasonable in the matter of fashion

The curtain on the US presidential election finally rose last month as John McCain and Barack Obama were formally nominated (提名) as candidates of the two major parties. This may be one of the hardest decisions voters have to make between two appealing candidates.

The big question for voters, as they face both an economic downturn and international threats, is: who will they elect? A young first-term senator promising change and new ideas, or a longtime senator with strong military experience and a reputation as a maverick

American voters have never seen a candidate quite like Obama. He has a white mother from the US and a black father from Kenya who left the family when Obama was very young. He spent part of his youth in Indonesia.

His supporters say Obama’s childhood gives him the advantage to repair the recent damage done to America’s image abroad. His opponents focus on his inexperience, noting he hasn’t finished his first term in the Senate.

However, McCain has a very different life story.

He grew up in a Navy family and was a pilot during the Vietnam War in the 1960s. When Obama was in kindergarten in Indone sia, McCain’s plane was shot down over Vietnam and he became a prisoner of war. McCain could have been released if he disowned America but he refused and so was held for five years.

So in the end, the election may hinge on (以…为转移) several factors that are hard to judge: Will Obama’s race matter to a significant number of voters? Will working-class whites who tended to support his primary opponent, Hillary Clinton, vote for Obama? And perhaps most important of all, will swing (摇摆) voters be more drawn to Obama’s vision (远景规划) or to McCain’s experience?

Whatever happens, one thing is clear: Whoever walks into the White House on January 20, , will find enormous challenges waiting for him in the Oval Office, both at home and abroad.

65. _________ makes the result of the election hard to predict.

A. Whether working class whites care about Obama’s inexperience

B. The economic trouble the country now faces

C. Who swing voters will finally decide to vote for

D. McCain being too old to govern the country

66. The appeal in Obama as a presidential candidate lies in ______.

A. his multi-cultural background

B. his belief in tradition

C. his inexperience in politics

D. his fantastic promises

67. The word “disown” in Paragraph 6 means closest to ______.

A. flee from

B. turn his back on

C. not keep it private

D. expose secrets about

68. The challenges that will face the new president _______.

A. are not mentioned in the text

B. include building a strong party and a friendly image

C. refer to the problems of immigrants and economy

D. refer to the problems of economy and international relations

D

LONDON—The tiny, distant and frozen planet Pluto, for 30 years believed to have just one moon, has suddenly been found to have two more satellites.

Only discovered in 1930 because of its vast distance from Earth, Pluto has remained a largely mysterious object ever since.

Some three billion miles from the Sun, Pluto, a dwarf planet, remains to be visited by a spacecraft.

Its first known satellite is called Charon. With a diameter of 1,200 km, it is half that of Pluto—unusually large for a moon in relation to its primary.

But now, using images from the Hubble Space Telescope, scientists from Johns Hopkins University, Southwest Research Institute and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology say they have found two more tiny orbiting satellites, P1 and P2.

Both are traveling outside the orbit of Charon and are tiny by comparison, the scientists wrote in the journal Nature.

P1, the more distant of the two from Pluto, has a diameter of between 60 and 165 km while P2 is 20 percent smaller.

"Although definitive orbits cannot be obtained, both new satellites appear to be moving in circular orbits in the same orbital plane as Charon with orbital periods of about 38 days for P1 and 25 days for P2," they wrote.

The discovery of the two new members of Pluto's family makes it the only object in the Kuiper belt—a vast region of rock and ice beyond Neptune which contains debris from the formation of the solar system—known to have multiple satellites, the scientists said.

69. It is implied in the passage that______.

A. Charon was not discovered until the late 1960s

B. Charon is the largest satellite in the solar system

C. all the inner planets are better observed than Pluto

D. Pluto may have some more moons to be discovered

70. The underlined word "primary" in Paragraph 4 refers to______.

A. size

B. shape

C. planet

D. Earth

71. Which of the following show the possible orbits and positions of Pluto's satellites?

72. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

A. Pluto: furthest in the solar system.

B. Pluto: two additional moons found.

C. Pluto: tiny, distant and frozen planet.

D. Pluto: two satellites formed in 30 years.

The space shuttle was made to take astronauts and goods to and from Earth orbit. The first space shuttle flight took place in 1981. NASA plans to quit flying the shuttle in . By then, it will have launched about 130 times!

The space shuttle has done many kinds of jobs. It has launched satellite from its cargo bay. It has been a science laboratory while orbiting the Earth. Its crews have fixed other spacecraft, such as the Hubble Space telescope. Today, the space shuttle is mostly used to work on the International Space Station.

The space shuttle has three main parts. The first part is the orbiter. The orbiter is the large, white space plane. It is the only part of the shuttle that goes into orbit. The orbiter is where the crew members live and work. It also has a payload bay for taking cargo into orbit. The second part of the shuttle is the external tank. This large, orange fuel tank is connected to the bottom of the orbiter for launch. The third part is really two pieces. Two white solid rocket boosters send out most of the thrust(推力)for the first two minutes of a shuttle launch. The solid rocket boosters are long and thin.

The space shuttle takes off like a rocket. The solid rocket boosters and the main engines on the orbiter provide the thrust for launch. The solid rocket boosters burn for about two minutes. Then they are dropped from the shuttle and fall into the ocean. Special boats bring the back so they can be used again. The shuttle’s main engines fire for about another six minutes. The external tank is dropped when all the fuel has been used. Shortly after this happens the shuttle and crew are in orbit.

73. Find in the passage a word closest in meaning to the underlined word “cargo”.

74. According to the passage, what is the use of the orbiter?

Manners nowadays in metropolitan cities like London are practically non-existent. It is nothing for a big, strong schoolboy to push an elderly woman aside to take the last remaining seat on the underway or bus.

This question of giving up seats in public transport is much argued about by young men, who say that since women have claimed equality, they no longer deserve to be treated with politeness and that those who go out to work should take their turns in the rat race like anyone else. But women have never claimed to be physically strong as men. Even if it is not agreed, however, the fact remains that courtesy(礼节) should be shown to the old and the sick. Are we really so lost to all ideals of unselfishness that we can sit there indifferently(冷漠地) reading the paper or a book, saying to ourselves, “First come, first served” while a grey-haired woman, a mother with a young child or a cripple(残障者) stands? Yet this is all too often seen.

Older people, tired and impatient from a day’s work, are not alway s considerate either — far from it. Many arguments break out as the older people push and squeeze(挤)each other to get on buses. One cannot approve this, of course, but one does feel there is just a little more excuse.

It seems urgent, not only that communications in transport should be improved, but also that communication between human beings should be kept smooth and polite. All over cities, it seems that people are too tired and too rushed to be polite. Shop assistants won’t bother to assist; taxi drivers shout at each other as they dash dangerously around corners; bus conductors pull the bell before their desperate passengers have time to get on or off the bus, and so on. It seems to us that it is up to the young to do their small part to stop such lowering of moral standards.

Nowadays it’s a common phenomenon that parents drive their children to school and back home, which causes a heated discussion. A survey has just been conducted about it, and the findings are as follows.

We can see that half of the supporters believe that more valuable time can be saved for students to get enough sleep. Another 30% think children can rest or have meals comfortably in their own cars. About 15% consider it reasonable just for the sake of children’s safety. The rest of them think it offers more chances for parents to communicate with their children.

However, other people hold different opinions. 55% of them believe that it results in more traffic jams, especially around schools in rush hours. And 30% think that driving kids to and from school will undoubtedly add to the parents’ burdens in aspects like time, energy and expenses. Still, 15% worry that in the long term children may be more dependent on their parents, which does no good to them.

A Micro-Enterprise Credit for Street Youth Introduction Although small-scale business training and credit programs have become more common throughout the world, relatively little attention has been paid to the need to direct such opportunities to youth living on the street or in difficult circumstances. Over the past years, Street Kids International (S.K.I.) has been working with partner organizations in Africa, Latin Africa and India to support the economic lives of street children. The purpose of this paper is to share some of the lessons S.K.I. and our partner organizations have learned. Background Typically, children end up on the streets not due to a single cause, but a combination of factors: the lack of adequately funded schools, the demand for income at home and so on. The street may be attractive to children as a place to find adventurous play and money. However, it is also a place where some children are exposed, with little or no protection, to exploitative employment, and urban crime. Street Business Partnerships S.K.I. has worked with partner organizations in Latin America, Africa and India to develop innovative opportunities for street children to earn income. ● The S.K.I Bicycle Courier Service first started in the Sudan. Participants in this enterprise were supplied with bicycles, which they used to deliver parcels and messages, but they were required to pay for it gradually from their wages. ● The Youth Skills Enterprise Initiative in Zambia is a joint program with the Red Cross Society. Street Youths are supported to start their own small business through business training, life skills training and access to credit. Lessons Learned The following lessons have emerged from the programs that S.K.I. and partner organizations have created.

People tend to pay attention to the shoes they and others wear.” Medical Daily notes that the number of detailed personality traits (特质) detected in the study include a person's general age, income, political tendency, and other personality traits, including someone's emotional stability. Lead researcher Omri Gillath said the judgments were based on the style, cost, color and condition of someone's shoes. In the study, 63 students from the University of Kansas looked at pictures showing 208 different pairs of shoes worn by the study's participants.

A When the sand began kicking up and hitting our faces, I started to worry that maybe we had made a mistake. That afternoon, my dad had stood on the deck (露台) of our home and laughed as our neighbors packed up their cars and headed inland. They left to spend the night in motels or at friends’ homes that were out of range of approaching summer storm. Challenging the weather that threatened to damping our spirits, we lit a fire on the beach. Dad told jokes and we had a good time. When it was 6:30 p.m., all laughter disappeared. Our eyes were drawn to the sky. A tornado (龙卷风) was headed straight for us! In a flash, we were all on our feet. The wind started screaming and now we were running to the cottage. My mom stopped next to the front door. “Where can we go?” She shouted at my dad. Most cottages on this part of Lake Michigan had been built without basements. Ours was no exception. The huge windows and the cot tage itself wouldn’t offer safety from high wind. “Follow me!” my dad yelled. We crawled (爬) beneath the deck, pressing ourselves against the foundation of the cottage. Between the deck supports, we watched the approaching storm in silent terror. My dad shouted, “Hold on!” and something else I couldn’t hear over the screaming wind. I think he was praying. By the time it reached our cottage, it was nothing more than a strong wind. The rest of the storm lasted for an hour and then simply blew away. “Next time, we’ll stay inland at Grandma’s. Okay?” my dad said. 21. What did the family do before the storm came? A. They left the motels. B. They packed up the cars. C. They stayed on the beach. D. They visited their neighbors. 22. What was the family’s immediate action when they saw the tornado approach? A. Closing their eyes tightly. B. Praying in silent terror. C. Crawling on the ground. D. Running away at once. 23. Where did the family stay in the storm? A. Under a deck. B. In a basement. C. Inside the car. D. Behind a door. 24. What can be the best title for the text? A. Life on the beach B. An Unusual Cottage C. Surviving a Storm D. My Admirable Family B The Best of Alaska
