The Vienna-based researchers showed that dogs doing a simple task when not rewarded if another dog, which continues to be rewarded, is present.

The experiment consisted of taking pairs of dogs ting(发叮当声) them to present a paw for a reward. On giving the “handshake" the dogs received a piece of food. One of the dogs was then asked to shake hands, but received no food. The other dog continued to get the food when it was asked to perform.

The dog without the reward quickly stopped doing the task, and showed signs of anger or stress when its partner was rewarded.

To make sure that the experiment was really showing the interaction between the dogs rather than just the annoyance of not being rewarded, a similar experiment was conducted where the dogs performed the task without the partner. Here continued to present the paw for much longer.

Dr. Frederike Range from the University of Vienna says this shows that it was the presence of the

rewarded partner that was the greater influence on their behavior.

“The only difference is that one gets food and the other doesn't. They are responding to being unequally rewarded. ” she says.

The researchers say this kind of behavior, where one animal gets annoyed with what is happening with another, has only been observed in primates (灵长类) before.

Studies with various types of monkeys and chimpanzees show they react not only to seeing their partners receiving; rewards when they are not, but also to the type of reward.

The dog study also looked at whether the type of reward made a difference. Dogs were given either bread or sausage, but seemed to react equally to either. Dr. Range says this may be because they have been trained.

In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity. Others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.

I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs. In their single-minded pursuit (追求) of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten.

However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: “I may have lost, but it doesn’t matter because I really didn't try. ” What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one's self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to relieve, can we discover a new meaning in competition.

64. What does this passage mainly talk about?

A. Competition helps to set up self-respect.

B. Opinions about competition are different among people.

C. Competition is harmful to personal quality development.

D. Failures are necessary experiences in competition.

65. The underlined phrase "the most vocal" in Paragraph 3 means _______.

A. those who try their best to win

B. those who value competition most highly

C. those who are against competition most strongly

D. those who rely on others most for success

66. What is the similar belief of the true competitors and those with a "desire to fail" ?

A. One's worth lies in his performance compared with others.

B. One's success in competition needs great efforts.

C. One's achievement is determined by his particular skills.

D. One's success is based on how hard he has tried.

67. Which point of view may the author agree to?

A. Every effort should be paid back.

B. Competition should be encouraged.

C. Winning should be a life-and-death matter.

D. Fear of failure should be removed in competition.

D

The United States has around 475,000 school buses. Each day they carry more than 25 million children, half of all the schoolchildren in the country.

These buses, on average, use 4 liters of diesel (柴油) fuel to travel less than 16 kilometers. When

the school year began last fall, diesel averaged 55 cents a liter nationally. The price nearly doubled by the end of school in June.

Bob Riley is the spokesman for the American School Bus Council. He says fuel prices negotiated (商议) for schools are not lower than others have to pay.

As a result, schools are looking for ways to reduce transportation costs. Bus routes are being redrawn or, in some cases, canceled. Some areas are buying buses that use natural gas or other alternative fuels.

Other steps include fewer field trips and less travel by sports teams. Some school districts may end any bus service not required by law.

Studies show that school buses are the safest form of transportation to and from school. The American School Bus Council says cuts in bus service are bad for children and possibly the environment. It says removing buses from the road will mean an increase in other vehicles transporting students. Spokesman Bob Riley says another concern is that reducing bus service might reduce attendance.

It could also get more children to walk or bicycle to school. That would surely make people happy at the National Center for Safe Routes to School. More kids walking or biking safely to school is the aim of a 3-year-old federal program, part of an international movement. The goal is to increase physical activity and reduce air pollution.

68. In the second paragraph, the author wants to prove that ______.

A. too many schoolchildren take buses every day

B. the cost of fuel has increased

C. the school buses consume more fuel than average

D. the school buses usually go on long routes

69. In the third paragraph, what does Bob Riley mean'?

A. The fuel prices for school buses need to be negotiated again.

B. High fuel prices are also affecting the efficiency of their services.

C. The fuel prices for school are much higher than others pay.

D. The American School Bus Council should work for students’ benefit.

70. What is the advantage of reducing school bus service according to the passage?

A. More fuel will be saved.

B. Students can go to school in a safer way.

C. Students can exercise by walking or riding to school.

D. Traffic jams will be reduced during rush hour.

71. What is the sixth paragraph mainly about?

A. Bob Riley's concern about the results of reducing school buses.

B. The convenience brought by school buses.

C. The bad effects of reducing school buses.

D. The studies about students' choices carried out by the American School Bus Council.

E

In one of the strongest indications of the power of the mind to influence the body a growing collection of evidence finds that people who are depressed (抑郁的) have a greatly higher risk of developing heart disease.

In a study of almost 3,000 men and 5,000 women, depressed men were 70 per cent more likely to develop heart disease than those who weren't depressed. While depressed women were just 12 per cent more likely to develop heart disease, those who were severely depressed were 78 per cent more likely. In fact, a 1998 study found that women who are depressed have a risk of dying from heart disease equal to that of women who smoke or who have high blood pressure.

The link works the other way around, too: While about 1 in 20 American adults experience major depression in a given year, that number jumps to about one in three among those who have survived a heart attack.

The more severe the depression, the more dangerous it is to your health. But some studies suggest that even mild depression, including feelings of hopelessness experienced over many years, may damage the heart. Other studies suggest depression may affect how well heart disease medications work.

Researchers aren't sure what the connection between depression and heart disease is, but theories exist. One is that people who are depressed tend not to take very good care of themselves. They're more

likely to eat high-fat, high-calorie "comfort" foods, less likely to exercise, and more likely to smoke. But beyond lifestyle, there is probably also a physiological link between depression and heart disease. Recent studies found that people with severe, depression tended to have a lack of heart-healthy 0-3 fatty acids. People who are depressed also often have high levels of stress hormones (荷尔蒙). These keep the body primed for fight or flight, raising blood pressure and causing the heart to beat faster, all of which put additional stress on coronary arteries (动脉) and prevent the body's natural healing mechanisms from working properly.

A whole branch of medicine is devoted to the complex links between mental health, the nervous system, the hormone system and so on. This science is gradually sorting out how the mind-body connection affects us, or defenses against heart disease.

Generally, an estimated 10 per cent of American adults experience some form of depression every year. Although available treatments can ease symptoms(症状)in more than 80 per cent of people treated, less than half of those with depression get the help they need.

72. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?

A. Depression -- Heart Disease Risk Factor

B. Heart Disease -- Health Killer

C. Depression -- Mental Health Enemy

D. Heart Disease – Depression Factor

73. Which statement is NOT true according to the passage?

A. With high blood pressure, depression is another potential risk to women's health.

B. Depression, which is mild, can possibly cause damage to your health.

C. Most people who experience depression get treated as they should be.

D. Depression may have some influence on the function of heart disease medication.

74. According to the passage, the possible connections between heart disease and depression are the following EXCEPT ______

A. depressed ones tend to eat high-fat and high-calories foods, which leads to physical damage to heart

B. severe heart disease may cause people to feel hopeless and depressed

C. depression may result in the lack of some kind of acids, which probably affects the working of people's heart

D. people with depression often have a high level of stress hormones, maybe, which will put extra pressure on one s heart

75. We can infer from the passage that ______.

A. more researches will be done to find the certain links between heart disease and depression

B. the percentage of adults with depression is higher than that of depressed adults with heart disease

C. one's lifestyle has relatively little relationship with one's mental health

D. those with depression have a higher risk of developing heart disease

In the past, American families tended to be quite large. Parents raising five or more children were common. Over the years, the size of the family has decreased.

One reason for this is an increase in the cost of living. On the average, children attend schools for more years than they used to, making them financially dependent on their families longer. Moreover, children nowadays are better dressed and have more money to spend on entertainment. The parents usually take the responsibility for all the expenses. Meanwhile, families are less close than they used to be. More and more American mothers work away from home.

The break up of the family occurs when the parents divorce. A lot of children in the U. S. live part of their young lives with only one parent. Broken families usually result in problems for children and parents alike. Children blame themselves when their parents separate. They grow up feeling unsettled as they are moved back and forth between parents. Usually one parent is responsible for raising the children. These single parents must care for the children’s emotional and psychological needs while also supporting them financially. This is very demanding and leaves very little time for the

parent’s own personal interests. Single parents often marry other single parents. In this type of family, unrelated children are forced to develop brother or sister relationship.

The situations of many American families today are not good. However, recent signs indicate that things are getting better. The divorce rate is declining. The rate of childbirth is rising. Perhaps Americans have learned how important families are.

Back then everyone seemed to be riding a bicycle. Millions of them, all black. Cars were rare. Yet since my arrival in Beijing last year, I've found the opposite is true. There are millions of cars. However, people still use their bicycles to get around. For many, it's the easiest and cheapest way to travel today. Bicycles also come in different colors—silver, green, red, blue, yellow, whatever you want. It's fun watching people biking. They rush quickly through crossroads, move skillfully through traffic, and ride even on sidewalks.Bicycles allow people the freedom to move about that cars just can't provide. Eager to be part of this aspect of Chinese culture, I decided to buy a bicycle. Great weather accompanied my great buy. I immediately jumped up on my bicycle seat and started home. My first ride home was orderly. To be safe, I stayed with a “pack” of bikers while cars on the streets came running swiftly out of nowhere at times. I didn't want to get hit. So I took the ride carefully. Crossing the streets was the biggest problem. It was a lot like crossing a major highway back in the United States. The streets here were wide, so crossing took time, skill and a little bit of luck. I finally made it home. The feeling on the bicycle was amazing. The air hitting my face and going through my hair was wonderful. I was sitting on top of the world as I passed by places and people. Biking made me feel alive. 21. According to the author, why are bicycles still popular in China today? A.Because they are traditional and safe. B.Because they are convenient and inexpensive. C.Because they are colorful and available. D.Because they are fast and environment friendly. 22. The author decided to buy a bicycle because he intended ________. A.to ride it for fun B.to use it for transport C.to experience local culture D.to improve his riding skills 23.How did the author feel about his street crossing? A.It was boring. B.It was difficult. C.It was lively. D.It was wonderful. 24. Which of the following best describes the author's biking experience? A.The author enjoyed showing off his biking skills. B.The author was annoyed by the air while riding. C.The author was praised by the other bikers. D.The author took great pleasure in biking. B A popular saying goes, “Sticks and stone may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.”However, that's not really true. Words have the power to build us up or tear us down. It doesn't matter if the words come from someone else or ourselves-the positive and negative effects are just as lasting. We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We're usually too embarrassed to admit it, though. But we really shouldn't be, because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit. This self-talk helps us motivate ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down. Beware, though, that as much as 77% of self-talk tends to be negative. So in order to stay positive, we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be quick to give ourselves a pat on the back. The next time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean your room, join me in saying, “Good job !”

武汉二中2015-2016学年高一下学期期末英语试卷 第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) A My mother was a firm supporter of corporal punishment, but for all her talking she has never spanked(打屁股)my sisters, and me only once. Instead she found ways of punishment that left me a more lasting memory. One of the most memorable of these occasions occurred when I was four. That day mother picked me up early from daycare because we were going to Sears&Roebuck to pay on a Christmas Layaway. I was excited by the lights and decorations, and as we walked through the toy section on the way to the Layaway Department, I saw a toy I had to have. It was a white and red telephone whose bells rang as it was pulled along on a string. Looking lovingly up at my mother I ask ed, “Mama, can I have that telephone?” She replied, "Baby, not now, but if you are a good girl maybe Santa will bring it to you. " "But Mama, I want that telephone right now. " Her eyes narrowed and her hand tightened on mine. "Becky, you can’t have that telephone today, but if you misbehave you can have a spanking. " By now we were standing in the long Holiday line in the Layaway Department, and I figure it was now or never. I lay down on the ground and began screaming, "I want that telephone, " over and over again. Weary Christmas shoppers looked as my mother calmly said, "Becky, you better get up by the count of three or else. One…Two…Three. " Nothing. I was still in full tantrum. So then she lay down beside me on the floor, and began kicking and screaming, "I want a new car, I want a new house, I want some jewelry, I want…" Shocked, I stood up. "Mama, stop. Mama get up, " I tearfully requested. She stood, and brushed herself off. At first stunned, the others waiting in line began to clap, and before I knew it they were cheering and laughing and patting my mother on her back. She blushed and took a little bow and the next thirty minutes in line was pure misery for me as various parents leaving the Layaway Department, shake their heads at me and say with a smile, "Your mom got you good. I bet you’ll never try that again. " And I didn’t, because it left a lasting mental picture more effective then any physical mark. 21. From the second paragraph, we can know that . A. It was after Christmas B. I was very well-behaved C. I liked a red and blue telephone D. I was a primary school student 22. The underlined word “tantrum” can be replaced by . A. disappointment B. sadness C. bad temper D. excitement 23.Why did the mother scream together with her daughter? . A. She wanted to educate the girl B. She wanted to amuse others C. She wanted the girl to buy those things for her D. She wanted to embarrass the girl 24. What can be inferred from this passage? A. The mother has many fans on educating daughter. B. The mother hit the girl in the Department. C. The mother planned to buy the telephone when the girl first asked. D. The girl is still naughty after this experience. B Why are people interested in eating raw foods or whole foods ? One reason is that eating these types of food reduces the risk of acid accumulation (积累;堆积)in your body. Raw and whole foods are usually digested more than cooked and refined foods. When we cook foods, we destroy the natural enzymes(酶) that are part of the food in its raw form. These enzymes were intended by nature to help us digest the food. When we consume food without these natural enzymes , our bodies either digest the food improperly or allow too many nutrients to be absorbed into bloodstream. In both instances, the result is obesity. When too many nutrients are absorbed at once, the body grows fat. Improperly digested food moves slowly through the digestive tract, where it becomes increasingly acidic. To protect its vital organs from this acidic waste, the body changes the acid into fat and stores it safely away from the organs. Processed foods contain chemical elements, which might confuse the appetite mechanism that tells us when we’ve had enough to eat; as a result, people often overeat. Processed foods also upset the digestive cycle. The body will either
