A dog is making national headlines after his owner found him guarding the property weeks after the residence and the surrounding areas were burned to the ground by Northern California’s Camp Fire.

Madison, an Anatolian shepherd dog, reunited with 75-year-old Andrea on Wednesday, the first day she was permitted to return to her land in the town of Paradise. But Madison hadn’t been totally on his own before that. After the fire broke out in early November, animal rescuer Sullivan received a request to search for Andre a’s two dogs, Madison and his brother, Miguel.

Sullivan told HuffPost that when the fast-moving camp fire broke out, Andrea had just minutes to escape and wasn’t able to find Madison and Miguel. A different rescue worker managed to capture Miguel not long afterward, and he was ultimately reunited with Andrea. But Madison couldn’t be tracked anywhere, Sullivan thought he wasn’t too far away. After all, some animal was eating the food she was regularly leaving out.

“The third day I went in there, I didn’t know if my mind was playing tricks on me, but I felt like I saw a flash of white movement,” she said. As it turned out, Sullivan was right, but it took a familiar person coming home to convince Madison it was safe to show his face. When Andrea drove up to the property the first day authorities allowed her back, it took about five minutes for Madison to come to greet her, tail wagging.

Even more amazing was seeing Miguel and Madison reunite with each other. Miguel had been so upset and so depressed being without his brother and away from his home.

Madison’s devotion did not come as a surprise, for Anatolian shepherd dogs are from Turkey and have been bred for thousands of years to protect and guard livestock, and their property. They are appreciated for their loyalty, their intelligence and their independent nature.

Rising rates of depression among American teenagers and young adults have led to a major question whether the same device being blamed for causing depression be used to predict it.

Studies have linked heavy smartphone use with worsening teen mental health. But as teens spend time on Instagram, Snapchat and YouTube, they also leave digital paths that may offer signs about their mental wellbeing. Experts say possible warning signs include changes in writing speed, voice quality, word choice and how often a child is absent from school.

Researchers are testing smartphone apps that use AI to predict depression and possible self-harm. But there are still issues to address, including privacy issues and making sure children give permission to be closely followed. Nick Allen, a psychologist at the University of Oregon, says the biggest barrier right now is learning what the mental health crisis signals are among all of the information available on people’s phones.

If smartphones can become effective predictors, app developers say the goal might be to offer automated text messages and links to assistance, or digital messages to parents, doctors and first responders.

Facebook is already doing what it calls “proactive detection.” Last year, after a suicide was broadcast on Facebook Live, the company trained its AI systems to look for words in online posts that could predict possible self-harm.

Ongoing research on the issue includes a Stanford University study of about 200 teens. Many of the teens are at risk for depression because of bullying ,family issues or other problems. At the University of California, researchers are offering online counseling and an experimental phone app to students who show signs of at least minor depression on a test. Besides, technology companies such as Mindstrong and Verily are testing their own experimental apps.

28. According to the studies, what leads to teenagers’ poor mental health?

A. Staying home from school often.

B. Having plenty of homework to do.

C. Lacking enough outdoor activities.

D. Being exposed to social media too much.

29. Which of the following isn’t a sign of poor mental health?

A. Changes in speaking volume.

B. Changes in writing speed.

C. Changes in choosing words.

D. Changes in presence at school.

30. What do smartphones need to do if they can predict mental health?

A. They tell people what they’d like to know.

B. They offer parents digital warning messages.

C. They can cure depression automatically.

D. They follow children’s l ife once in a while.

31. What can be a suitable title for the text?

A. Suicide and Its Possible Reasons

B. Artificial Intelligence and Depression

C. Phone Use to Blame for Depression

D. A New Way to Find Depression

D

It’s increasingly d ifficult to feed a hungry planet as climate change and decreasing farmland and other resources undermine food systems, the U. N. Food and Agricultural Organization said Wednesday as it renewed appeals for better policies and technologies to reach “zero hunger.”

Population growth requires supplies of more nutritious food at affordable prices, but increasing farm output is hard since humans have overtaken Earth’s carrying capacity in terms of land, water and climate change, the report said. About 820 million people are malnourished.

“The call for action is very clear. It is possible in our lifetime and it is also realistic to end hunger and malnutrition, ” Wina, vice president of Zambia, told the gathering.

But it’s also endangered by civil conflic ts. In Yemen, where thousands of civilians have died in airstrikes by a Saudi-led coalition, the aid group Save the Children says 85,000 children younger than 5 may have died of hunger or disease in the civil war. In Afghanistan, a similar situation has displaced more than 250,000 people, according

to the U. N. refugee agency.

“After decades of gains in fighting hunger, this is a serious setback and we, together with member governments and other partners, are all very concerned,” Graziano said in a videotaped address to the conference. Hunger is still most severe in Africa, but the largest number of undernourished people live in the Asia-Pacific region, the report said. It said good public policies and technology are the keys to improving the situation.

The FAO estimates that global demand for food will jump by half from 2013 to 2050. Farmers can expand land use to help make up some of the difference, but that option is limited in places like Asia and the Pacific, where urbanization is eating up still more land that once may have been used for agriculture.

Increasing farm output beyond sustainable levels can cause permanent damage to ecosystems, the report said, noting that it often causes soil erosion(侵蚀), pollution with plastic, pesticides and fertilizers, and a loss of biodiversity.

32. What does the underlined word “undermine” in Paragraph 1 mean?

A. To update something partially.

B. To make something less effective.

C. To restore something completely.

D. To make something more affordable.

33. Why is there not enough nutritious food for humans?

A. There is not enough laborers on the farm.

B. Governments haven’t shouldered their responsibilities.

C. Earth’s carrying capacity cannot keep up with humans’ need.

D. The world population has never grown at such a high speed.

34. What does the author want to tell us by mentioning Yemen and Afghanistan?

A. Wars and conflicts are putting food security at risk.

B. Undernourished people are becoming more and more.

C. People of the two countries have no access to enough food.

D. Severe climate conditions make much difference to lack of food.

35. What is the text mainly about?

A. More land is needed to feed the world.

B. Global demand for food is on the decrease.

C. Speed up urbanization and we will stop hunger.

D. Adopt better policies and technologies to end hunger.

What makes all of these especially unusual is that Ruggiero, 24, has only one leg. When he was a 19-year-old musical theater student at New Jersey’s Montclair State University, Ruggiero had a rare bone cancer in his right leg. Finally his leg would have to be amputated (截) below the knee. Such a setback could have easily ended the career of a less tough person, but Ruggiero, who has been dancing since he was five, now puts the experience into his performance. His show, “The One-Legged Song and Dance Man: Volume 3”,explains how he returned to dance just 18 months after the amputation. His dance now relies on the use of a peg leg(假肢) ,he explains. The secret to his surprising success, he says, was being a “stubborn”patient who refused to give up on his dance and performing studies, despite the advice of his doctor. “It was a real setback, but after it was all over,I said, ‘You know what? I need to pick up right where I left off and continue my career, ’”Ruggiero said. Ruggiero has come to view his peg leg as an instrument. “Tap dancers—they’re always calling themselves musicians, and their feet are their instrument, ” he said. Noting that many audience members will never have seen a one-legged dancer
