Why Americans Cal l Soccer“Soccer”

New Zealand's largest newspaper is deeply conflicted. With the World Cup underway in Brazil, the New Zealand Herald refers to the “global round-ball game”as “soccer” or “football”?It's “football” by a wide range.

We in the US,would disagree. Szymanski, a sports economist, published a paper exposing th at “soccer” is an American invention. In fact, it's a British import. The Briton used it often—until it became too much of an Americanism for British English to bear.

As early as the Middle Ages, the rough outlines of soccer—a game, a ball, feet—appear to have been present in England. But it wasn't until the sport became popular among noble boys at schools in the 19th century that these young men tried to standardize(制定标准)play. The most divisive(引起争议的) issue was whether to permit “hacking(踢)”.

But that wasn't where the argue ended. In 1871, another set of clubs met in London to arrange a version of the game that involved more use of the hands.

“From then the two versions of football were distinguished to their longer titles. Rugby Football and Association Football,”Szymanski writes. “The rugby football game was

shortened to ‘rugger(英式橄榄球), ' while the association football game was shortened to ‘soccer.'”

Both sports divided yet again as they spread around the world. The word “soccer”caught on in the USA in the first decade of the 20th century, to distinguish the game from American football.

Szymanski counted the frequency with which the words“foot ball” and “soccer” appeared in American and British news as far back as 1900. What he found is enchanting:_“soccer” was a recognized term in Britain in the first half of the 20th century, but it wasn't widely used until after World WarⅡ,when it was popular for a couple decades, perhaps because of the influence of American troops stationed in Britain during the war and the attraction of American culture. In the 1980s, however, Brits began rejecting them, as soccer became a more popular sport in the United States.

()38.Which of the following is TRUE?

(2015·福建高考)Life can be so wonderful, full of adventure and joy. It can also be full of challenges, setbacks and heartbreaks. Whatever our circumstances, we generally still have dreams, hopes and desires—that little something more we want for ourselves and our loved ones. Yet knowing we can have more can also create a problem, because when we go to change the way we do things, up come the old patterns and pitfalls that stopped us from seeking what we wanted in the first place.

This tension between what we feel we can have and what we're seemingly able to have is the niggling(烦人的) suffering, the anxiety we feel. This is where we usually think it's easier to just give up. But we're never meant to let go of the part of us that knows we can have more. The intelligence behind that knowing is us—the real us. It's the part that believes in life and its possibilities. If you drop that, you begin to feel a little “dead” inside because you're dropping “you”.

So,if we have this capability but somehow life seems to keep us stuck, how do we break these patterns?

Decide on a new course and make one decision at a time. This is good advice for a new adventure or just getting through today's challenges.

While, deep down, we know we can do it, our mind—or the minds of those close to us—usually says we can't.

That isn't a reason to stop, it's just the mind, that little man or woman on your shoulder, trying to talk you out of something again. It has done it many times before. It's all about starting simple and doing it now.

Decide and act before overthinking. When you do this you may feel a little, or large, release_from_the_jail_of_your_mind and you'll be on your way.

()41.It can be inferred from the first two paragraphs that we should ________.

A.slow down and live a simple life

B.be careful when we choose to change

C.stick to our dreams under any circumstances

D.be content with what we already have

()42.What is the key to breaking the old patterns?

A.To focus on every detail.

B.To decide and take immediate action.

C.To listen to those close to us.

D.To think twice before we act.

()43.Which of the following best explains the underlined part in the last paragraph?

A.Escape from your punishment.

B.Realization of your dreams.

C.Freedom from your tension.

D.Reduction of your expectations.

()44.What does the author intend to tell us?

A.It's necessary to decide and act to get what we want.

B.It's important to learn to accept sufferings in life.

C.It's impractical to change our way of thinking.

D.It's harder than we expect to follow a new course.

It was eleven o'clock that night when Mr.Pontellier returned from his night out. He was in an excellent humor, in high spirits, and very talkative. His entrance awoke his wife, who was in bed and fast asleep when he came in. He talked to her while he undressed, telling her bits of news and gossip that he had gathered during the day. She was overcome with sleep, and answered him with little words.

He thought it very discouraging that his wife, who was the sole object of his existence, showed so little interest in things which concerned him and valued so little his conversation.

Mr.Pontellier had forgotten the candies and peanuts that he had promised the boys. Still, he loved them very much and went into the room where they slept to take a look at them and make sure that they were resting comfortably. The result of his investigation was far from satisfactory. He turned and shifted the youngsters about in bed. One of them began to kick and talk about a basket full of complaints.

Mr.Pontellier returned to his wife with the information that Raoul had a high fever and needed looking after.

Mrs.Pontellier was quite sure Raoul had no fever. He had gone to bed perfectly well, she said, and nothing had made him sick. Mr.Pontellier was too well familiar with fever symptoms to be mistaken. He assured her the child was burning with fever at that moment in the next room.

He reproached(责备)his wife with her inattention, her habitual neglect of the children. If it

was not a mother's place to look after children, whose on earth was it? He himself had his hands full with his business. He could not be in two places at once; making a living for his family on the street, and staying home to see that no harm done to them. He talked in a dull, repeated and insistent way.

Mrs.Pontellier sprang out of bed and went into the next room. She soon came back and said nothing. Mrs.Pontellier was by that time thoroughly awake. She began to cry a little, and wiped her eyes on the sleeve of her nightdress. She went out on the porch(走廊), where she sat down and began to rock herself in the chair.

She could not have told why she was crying. Such experiences as had just happened were not uncommon in her married life. They seemed never before to have weighed much against the abundance of her husband's kindness and a uniform devotion which had come to be self-understood.

An indescribable oppression, which seemed to generate in some unfamiliar part of her consciousness, filled her whole being with vague pain. It was like a shadow, like a mist passing across her soul's summer day. It was strange and unfamiliar; it was a mood. She did not sit there complaining her husband, expressing sadness about Fate, which had directed her footsteps to the path which they had taken. She was just having a good cry all to herself.

The following morning Mr.Pontellier was up in good time to take the carriage which was to convey him to the ship. He was returning to the city to his business, and they would not see him again at the Island till the coming Saturday. He had regained his calmness, which seemed to have been somewhat weakened the night before. He was eager to be gone, as he looked forward to a lively week in the financial center.

()45.You may read this passage ________.

A.on the 7 o'clock news

B.on a shopping website

C.in a novel

D.in a TV ad

()46.Mr.Pontellier came back home from his night out in a(n)________state of mind.

A.excited B.confused

C.depressed D.disappointed

()47.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.One of Mr.Pontellier's children had a fever.

B.Mr.Pontellier brought presents that he had promised the boys

C.Mrs.Pontellier didn't care her children very much.

D.Mr.Pontellier was dissatisfied with his wife.

()48.The writer would most likely describe Mr.Pontellier's conduct during the evening as ________.

A.impatient and generous

B.enthusiastic and responsible

C.concerned and gentle

D.inconsiderate and self-centered

()49.In Paragraphs 7 to 9, Mrs.Pontellier's reactions to her husband's behavior suggest that ________.

A.she accepts unquestioningly her role of taking care of the children

B.this is one of the times she has acknowledged her unhappiness with her husband

C.her relationship with her husband is not what has made her depressed

D.she is angry about something that happened before her husband left

()50.What do you think may be the reason of Mr.and Mrs.Pontellier's changing of relationship?

A.The family's economic condition.

B.Their children's health issue.

C.Their limited coexistence time and way of communication.

D.Mr.Pontellier's not loving his family any more.

第三部分:任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)

请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。

As the Internet and computer become more common, the need for security is more important than ever. According to the latest statistical analysis, it is estimated(估计)there are over 1.1 billion Internet users worldwide. The Internet provides diverse and useful resources such as Email, instant messaging, academic research, product research, paying bills, shopping, online banking, and the list goes on and on. For many of its 1.1 billion users the Internet is not just a tool but a way of life. But most users fail to take the time to research the risks involved. One of the greatest risks in the online world is computer hacking(非法入侵).

Computer hacking is the unauthorized access to a computer or network of computers. Hackers, those people who illegally enter systems, may alter or delete information, steal private information, or spread viruses that can damage or destroy files. But how exactly can a hacker get

into a system to do these things?

Most hackers use information called protocols(协议) that are built into computer software. These protocols allow computers to interact with one another. Protocols are sort of like computer police officers. When a computer connects to another system, the protocols check to see if the access is valid. The protocols can also determine how much information can be shared between the two systems. Hackers can control the protocols to get unlimited access to a computer system. In fact, just the act of entering a computer network is considered hacking. This is commonly called passive hacking. Passive hackers get a rush from just being able to invade a challenging system like a bank or military network. Hackers that do damage to a system by releasing viruses or altering, deleting, or taking information are known as active hackers they are, by far, the more dangerous of the two.

The easiest way to protect a system is with a good password. Using powerful password is an efficient way to strengthen the security of a system. Long and unusual passwords are harder for hackers to correctly guess. For even greater security, some online services now use “password-plus” systems. In this case, users first put in a password and then put in a second code that changes after the user accesses the site. Users have special cards or devices that show them the new code to use the next time. So if a hacker steals the password, they won't have the code. Or if the hacker somehow gets the code, they still don't know the password.

Florence Chadwick was born in California in 1918. She grew up on the beach and began competing as a swimmer at the age of six, when her uncle entered her in a race. For the next 19 years, she continued as a competitive swimmer.

On July 4,1952, at the age of 34, Chadwick attempted to become the first woman to swim 21 miles across the Catalina Channel, from a port on the California coast. That day the ocean was ice cold, the fog was so thick that she could hardly see the support boats that followed her, and sharks swam around her. Several times, her support crew used guns to drive away the sharks. While Americans watched on televisions, her mother and her trainer, who were in one of the support boats, encouraged her to keep going. However, after 15 hours and 55 minutes, with only a half mile to go, she felt that she couldn't go on, and begged to be taken out of the water.

Later,Chadwick told a reporter, “Look, I'm not excusing myself, but if I had seen land I know, I could have made it.” The fog had made her unable to see her swimming goal, and it made her feel she was getting nowhere. Two months later, she tried again. Although the fog was still heavy, yet this time she made it with the goal rooted in her mind. She knew behind the fog was the land she pursued.

广东海康县2017高考英语阅读理解一轮系列 阅读下列四篇短文,从每小题后所给的A,B,C或D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。 Leadership i s the most significant word in today’s competitive business environment because it directs the manager of a business to focus inward on their personal abilities and style. Experts on l eadership will quickly point out that “how things get done” influences the success of the outcomes and indicates a right way and a wrong way to do things. When a noted leader on the art of management, Peter Drucker, coined the phrase“Management is doing th ings right; leadership is doing the right things”, he was seeking to clarify the distinctions he associates with the terms. When Stephen Covey, founder and director of the Leadership Institute, explored leadership styles in the past decade, he focused on the habits of a great number of highly effective individuals. His Seven Habits of Highly Effective People became a popular bestseller very quickly. His ideas forced a reexamination of the early leadership example, which centered on the feature that was found in the character ethic(道德准则) and the personality ethic. The former ethic suggested success was founded on modesty, loyalty, courage, patience and so on. The personality ethic suggested it was one’s attitude, not behavior, that inspired success, and this ethic was founded on a belief of positive mental attitude. In contrast to each of these ideas, Covey advocates that leaders need to understand universal principles of effectiveness, and he highlights how vital it is for leaders to first personally manage themselves if they are to enjoy any hope of outstanding success in their work environments. To achieve a desired vision for your business, it is essential that you have a personal vision of where you are headed and what you value. Business leadership means that managers need to “put first things first,” which implies that before leading others, you need to be clear on your own values, abilities, and strengths and be seen as trustworthy. 1. What does Peter Drucker’s phrase infer?

高考英语一轮复习 题型整合练(4)(含解析)

四川2019高考英语一轮题型整合练(4) 李仕才 一、阅读理解。 A “BANG!”the door caused a reverberation (回声). It was just standing there, with father standing on one side, and me on the other side. We were both in great anger. “Never set foot in this house again!”stormed father. With tears welling up in my eyes, I rushed out of the flat and ran along the street. The street lights were shining, causing rather sad feelings. I wandered aimlessly. A young father who held a child in his arms walked past me. I felt as if I saw my childhood from another space: happy and carefree. But now …I don’t know whether it is because I have grown up or because dad is getting old. We differ in our ways of thinking. We are just like two people coming from two different worlds. It feels like there is an iron door between us that can never be opened. I wandered the streets, without a destination in mind. My heart was frozen on this hot summer night. As I walked on, there were fewer and fewer people on the streets, until I had only the street lights to keep me company. When I finally reached the high-rise apartment block in which I lived, I saw that the light was still on. I thought to myself: “Is father waiting for me, or is he still angry with me?” In fact, it was nothing. Perhaps, dad was throwing away some of his old stamps.

Here's a question for you to answer. What have the following countries got in common: Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom, Iceland and Madagascar? Quite easy if you can picture them on the globe —they are all islands. All of these nations are surrounded by sea. What have these five nations got in common? Hungary, Botswana, Kazakhstan, Paraguay and Liechtenstein. They are all landlocked. In other words, in contrast to the first five countries whose coastline forms their border, the second five have no coastline at all. If you are a Hungarian or a Paraguayan, you have to pass through somebody else's country if you want to go to the beach. Liechtenstein is even more of a geographical phenomenon; it is “doubly landlocked” because the countries that surround it — Austria and Switzerland are also landlocked. There is only one other country in the world in a similar position, Uzbekistan, which is surrounded by five other landlocked countries. Go and have a look at the map if you want to know which. So how do countries become landlocked? If you are Swiss or
