Persuasive Speech（Manuscript）——Avoid Premarital Sex

Hello, everyone. Have you noticed that there is a trend that in modern society, a growing number of people, especially college students, have sex before graduation? A study, where 2000 students as specialized subjects, coming from 24 provinces and cities in China are involved, shows that nearly two-thirds of college students hold a more tolerant attitude towards premarital sex, of which the proportion among boys is obviously higher than girls. This kind of controversial issue has been considered as an important problem. In my point of view, having premarital sex is adverse for Chinese college students in terms of mental conflicts and physical damage, unbalanced relationship of each other, and the great challenges of traditional Chinese culture. In my speech, firstly I am going to tell you the reasons that why we must avoid it, and secondly I will put forward some suggestions we should follow.

Many people argue that college students are adults and sometimes they have sexual needs. As long as they are aware of their responsibilities, they can make their own decisions and handle everything. However, premarital sex brings violent mental conflicts and physical damage, which is especially harmful to women. As Gynecological professors state, the physical condition of college students has been mature. Once they receive premarital sex, it can lead to not only body injury like abortion and infertility, but also the psychological harm. Moreover, according to the Foundation of the United Nations Population Activities, there are about six thousand young people getting infected with STD AIDS every day all over the world, accounting for half of the people aged from 15 to 24. So in this case, having premarital sex may

bring about a vast and unimaginable damage to their mind and body, or even result in more serious problems, like death.

Some young people, including the two lovers themselves, hold the point of view that premarital sex should not be rigidly prohibited and it is go od for each other’s deeper understanding and communication. If they consider whether having premarital sex is right or not, they will exchange their inner thinking to the opposite sides, which helps them form a close relationship. On the other hand, some experts who are specialized in sexology do a large amount of research which proves that sexual experience has a great effect on their future life. They think that the form of unhealthy psychology to a large extent must affect the harmonious and perfect life of the couple.

The distinguished expert, Fang Gang contends that it is a kind of historical regression to advocate the so-called “chastity education” of refusing sex before marriage. In his opinion, the opening of the sexual concept is the result of the development of society. Dating back to 1980s, it was absolutely true to be condemned by the public if someone mentioned premarital sex. But with the development of society, people have accepted this kind of behavior gradually. However, most people believe that the increasing of premarital sex ratio is a great challenge for sexual morality and traditional Chinese culture. When hearing “premarital sex”, schools and teachers strongly oppose it. In their mind, one of the students’responsibilities is to study. Students are not so mature that they may not be accountable for their behavior. Therefore, sometimes they do not pay more attention to sexual morality. In addition, it is hard to break free Chinese tradition since our nation is not like western countries from

ancient times. As a result, premarital sex cannot be widely accepted by public and it must be a barrier of protecting our culture.

From what have been discussed above, we strongly insist that our college students should avoid having premarital sex before getting a degree. In addition, it is unadvisable and improper for university students to neglect the consciousness of self-protection and Chinese tradition. And at the same time, government should strengthen moral education on every stage of ages.
