Part I Writing (30 minutes) 1

Directions:For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay based on the picture below. You should start your essay with a brief account of the popularity of e-books and then explain whether e-books will

replace traditional books. You should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words.

The Popularity of E-Books

With the development of technology, more people are tending to read books by computers or phones rather than read the traditional books. As is showed in the picture, e-books even begin to take over the reading class in some schools. To a great extent, e-book does have its advantages.

Firstly, e-book is more convenient. Nowadays, almost all people have cell-phones or computers, so they can just download e-books immediately and read them wherever they go. Secondly, it’s much cheaper to get e-books. We can get e-books on the Internet with a little fees or even get them for free. Thirdly, some e-books are equipped with audible and visual applications, which add great fun to the process of reading.

However colorful and advanced e-books are, they will not replace the traditional books. For one thing, reading e-books is easier to make our eyes dry and tired. For another, there are still many books unavailable in digital forms because of the issue of copyright. Therefore, traditional books will still be the indispensable part of our life.

The Impacts of Over-reliance on the Internet

Recently, the Internet seems to have become so indispensable in our life that almost everything we do and every aspect of our life is significantly affected by it. And in the picture, the teacher seems so sad when the little boy even challenges to say that they needn’t to learn geography anymore for they have Google Earth. No doubt that the Internet has brought great convenience to our life.

However, as the sayin g goes: “Overdone is worse than undone”, over-reliance on the Internet may give rise to some dangers. On one hand, those who turn to the Internet whenever they have troubles are in fact on the way of destroying their ability of creative thinking. On the other hand, the colourful world provided by the Internet may distract people’s attention from their study or their daily works and thus a negative effect may be done to their academic and work efficiency.

Therefore, we should never depend completely on the Internet. And we should only treat it as a useful tool to make great contribution to our life.

The Importance of Spelling

In the picture, a boy is having an interview for his college application. However, according to the interviewer, the boy has spelt the word “COLLEGE” wrong in his essay. Likely, the boy will lose his chance to enter this college because of his bad spelling.

With the development of personal computer and occurrence of online chat, people pay less and less attention to their spelling nowadays, without knowing that spelling still plays an important role in formal occasions. For one thing, misspelling can be misleading. As a consequence, the reader may not understand you or even misunderstand the intended meaning. For another, a spelling mistake may be considered as a sign of carelessness. Therefore, you leave a bad impression on the readers and will barely be trusted by them.

The way I see it, we should develop a good habit and pay attention to our spelling all the time. Only in this way can we avoid making trivial mistakes in formal occasions.
