―God made the world, but the Dutch made Holland.‖ True to this saying, the people of the Netherlands are again ―making‖ their land.

About 1980 the Netherlands will complete a project begun in the 1920’s: transforming the Zyuder Zee, an inlet (小港) of the North Sea into dry land and a freshwater lake. By stages, 550,000 acres of land will serve several purposes: industrial, recreational, military, and agricultural. Fed by the river Yssel, the remaining water basin Lake Yssel, about 300,000 acres will irrigate the surrounding land and help in the fight against salination (盐化作用). Excess water will drain through sluices into the sea.

As the first stop a nineteen-mile-long barrier dam, rising twenty-five feet above sea level, closed the entrance to the Zuider Zee. Then the experimental polder of a hundred acres preceded the first and smallest of the main polders fifty thousand acres that became dry land in 1930. The fifth and largest polder 150,000 acres will be the last of the Zuider Zee works.

Farmers for the new polder (开拓地) come from every province. The Eastern Flevoland polder, completed in 1957, became farmland for many from the province of Zealand which was badly hit by the disastrous floods of 1953.

Subject: Help! Date: 21/06/2005 10:02 AM

Dear Aunt Aggie,

I'm having a problem with my classmate, Rena, at school. The other day I wrote an email to another classmate, Beth, in which I said some things about Rena that perhaps weren't very nice. Unluckily, when Beth was writing back to me, she accidentally forwarded(无意间转发) the message to Rena! Now Rena is really angry with me and won't talk to me, and Beth is unhappy as well. She's said sorry to me a hundred times already, but the harm is done. I feel bad, because I never would have said those things to Rena's face, but how do I get her to forgive(谅解) me? What should I do? Joe

To: joe@https://www.wendangku.net/doc/8813944547.html, From: Aggie@https://www.wendangku.net/doc/8813944547.html,

Subject: Some advice Date: 22/06/2005 10:45 AM

Dear Joe,

This problem is more common than you might think! Email is very useful, but also very dangerous, as you don't know where your message might end up! First of all, you should say sorry right away to Rena. Explain that it was a mistake, and that you didn't mean to hurt her feelings. It may take time for her to be able to forgive you, but that's up to her. Then you might want to do something nice for her. Perhaps send her some flowers to show that you're truly sorry. Also, you should remember that old saying:" If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." And good luck! Aggie

B. Joe's classmate, Rena, sent Beth an email and made her unhappy.

C. Joe received a wrong email from Rena and became angry.

D. Joe's friend, Beth, is unhappy because Joe sent her an angry email.

( C )2. After Rena's feelings got hurt, what did Joe do?

A. He emailed her and said sorry.

B. He asked Beth what he should do.

C. He emailed Aunt Aggie for help.

D. He said sorry to Rena face to face,

( B )3. What does the underlined (画线的) sentence mean in the second email? It means "________".

A. because you don't know who the email is for

B. because you can never know who will get your email at last

C. because you don't know where your email was written

D. because you never know where the message is from

( D )4. What advice did Aggie give Joe?

A. Joe, Beth and Rena should have a talk together.

B. Joe should wait for some time before saying sorry to Rena.

C. Joe should ask Beth to explain (解释) that to Rena.

D. Joe Should say sorry to Rena and then send her some flowers.

( D )5. From the emails, we know that ________.

A. Joe, Rena and Beth study at different schools

B. Beth didn't forward the message to Rena

Food is life; it gives us the nourishment (营养) we need to stay alive and be healthy. Usually, we eat because we are hungry or need energy. Brian Wansink, a professor (教授) at the University of Illinois, says we also eat certain (某种) foods because they make us feel good, and remind us of happy memories. Wansink calls this kind of food comfort food. For some people, ice cream is a comfort food. For others, a bowl of noodles makes them feel good.

How does a food became comfort food? Professor Wansink believes that we connect food with important times, feelings, and people in our lives, 'When I was a child, my mother made a delicious soup; I loved it. Now, I often eat this soup when I am tired or worried, and it helps me feel better,' says one of Wansink's friends.

Do men and women choose different comfort foods? Wansink's research (研究) at the University of Illinois says 'yes'. In his study, the favourite comfort for both

men and women was ice cream. After this, men usually preferred hot, delicious foods like soup or noodles. Women liked sweet things such as chocolate and candies. Men and women like to eat comfort foods when they are happy, but women eat these foods more when they are sad or worried.

A. fast food

B. healthy food

C. Chinese food

D. comfort food

( B )2. In Wansink's study, both men and women like to eat ________. A. soup B. ice cream C. noodles

C. men usually eat comfort foods when they are sad

D. women probably eat comfort foods more often than men

Is your family interested in buying a dog? A dog can be a good friend to your family, but if you choose the wrong kind of dog, it can cause you a lot of trouble. Family should sit down and discuss the problems before buying a dog. Even if the children in your family are the ones who want the dog, the parent are the ones who are really responsible (有责任的) for seeing that the animal is properly cared for. If you don't know much about dogs, it's a good idea to go to the library for books about different kinds of dogs, as well as books about how to train a young dog. We have arrived in the hot, wet city of Bangkok. This is our first trip to Thailand(泰国). All the different smells make us want to try the food. We plan to stay here for a few days, visit some places in the city, and then travel to Chiang Mai in the North.

Bangkok is wonderful and surprising! The places are interesting. We visited the famous market which was on water, and saw a lot of fruits and vegetables. They are given food freely by visitors . They usually throw food to them , and don’t thi nk about at all whether the food is right or not . Some of the peacocks became ill , some even died after eating the bad food given by the visitors.

I’m sure most of the visitors who throw food to the peacocks really like the birds , but don’t realize (意识到) that they may be doing them harm (伤害).

The visitors should be told that what have done is very harmful to the birds , and this kind of thing must be stopped from happening .

Perhaps we can build some small shops beside Dongfeng Square to sell peacock food . For us every person , it’s our duty to give more love to these beautiful birds and to look after them carefully.

Yours,

Sun Yan

one-ninth (九分之一)." Soon after that he died.

Now, the old man had seventeen camels, and the three brothers didn't know how to do as their father said. We know mosquitoes very well. Mosquitoes fly everywhere. They can be found almost all over the world, and there are more than 2,500 kinds of them.

No one likes the mosquito. But the mosquito may decide if she loves you. She? Yes, she. The male mosquito doesn’t bite! Only the female mosquito bites because she needs blood to lay eggs. She is always looking for things or people she wants to bite. If she likes what she finds, she bites. But if she doesn’t like your blood, she will turn to someone else for more delicious blood. Next time a mosquito bites you, just remember you are chosen. You’re d ifferent from the others!

If the mosquito likes you, she lands on your body without letting you know. She bites you so quickly and quietly that you may not feel anything different. After

she bites, you will have an itch(痒) on your body because she puts something from her mouth together with your blood. When the itch begins, she has flown away.

And then what happens? Well, after her delicious dinner, the mosquito feels tired. She wants to find a place to have a good rest. There, in a tree or on a wall, she begins to lay eggs, hundreds of eggs.

Do you know why different animals or pests(昆虫) have their special colours? Colours in them seem to be used mainly to protect themselves.

Some birds like eating locusts(蝗虫), but birds cannot easily catch them. Why? It is because locusts change their colours together with the change of the colours of crops(庄稼). When crops are green, locusts look green. But as the harvest (收获)time comes, locusts change to the same brown colour as crops have. Some other pests with different colours from plants are easily found and eaten by others. So they have to hide themselves for lives and appear only at night.

If you study the animal life, you’ll find the main use of colouring is to protect themselves. Bears, lions and other animals move quietly through forests. They cannot be easily seen by hunters. This is because they have the colours much like the trees.

Have you ever found an even more strange act? A kind of fish in the sea can send out a kind of very black liquid(液体) when it faces danger. While the liquid spreads over(散开), its enemies(敌人) cannot find it. And it immediately swims away. So it has lived up to now though it is not strong at all.

A. are small animals

B. are easily found by birds

C. are dangerous to their enemies

( C )2.How can pests with different colours from plants keep out of danger?

A. They run away quickly.

B. They have the colours much like their enemies.
