What Does Folklore Tell Us?

Every culture has its own folklore. Folklore is a collection of tales and bits of

wisdom that teach children how to behave and think. It includes legends, songs, art, tales, myths, and proverbs, People pass on folklore from one generation to the next.

Folklore helps keep history alive. For example, legends are folktales that are based on true stories. The plain truth about history is not always exciting. To keep

is about Davy Crockett. Davy Crockett lived in the woods on the frontier, or the region where people explored and lived on new land. He became a leader, and he fought in a war with Mexico. People exaggerated the facts when they told stories about the brave things he had done. Davy Crockett began to stand for the spirit of

the frontier. Children enjoyed the tales. They also learned about frontier life

through stories about Davy Crockett

tall tales about the American West. An example of a tall tale is the story about Paul Bunyan. the giant lumberjack, or woodcutter. The tale says that Bunyan's clothes were so large that his shirt buttons were wagon wheels. Tales about Bunyan take place at his lumber camp. The tales are fun to hear. They also show what life was like in a lumber camp.

beings. The gods may be human or animal in form. ④

about the beliefs and values of a group of people

Fairy tales also may tell us something about a culture. The teller and the

dience both know that these types of folktales are not true. Examples of fairy tales include"Cinderella,"" Jack and the Beanstalk, and"The Three Little Pigs Fairy tales often begin with the words Once upon a time.... The same tale may exist in different forms in more than one culture.

People who study folklore to learn more about a culture are called folklorists Folklorists study more than just folktales. They also study folk art, folk music, poetry, and proverbs. A proverb is a wise saying, such as "The early bird gets the worm." This saying means that people who are early are more likely to get what you want than people who are late. Elders use proverbs to teach their wisdom

to children.

In the United States in the nineteenth century, many children attended school in one-room schoolhouses. Grades one through eight shared the same classroom.A one-room schoolhouse was usually built of wood and painted white or red.

To get to school, children walked, rode horses, or rode in a buggy. When it was time for school to begin, the teacher rang a bell, Then the children went inside.Sometimes they stopped in a small room first to wash their hands. They poured water from a jug, or pitcher, into a bowl called a basin. They hung their coats on hooks in a cloakroom. Then they went to their desks. They stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. The smallest children sat in the smallest desks at the front of the room. These children were the closest ones to the teacher's desk. The tallest children sat in the back. A potbelly stove stood in the middle of the room. The stove heated the room on cold days, The children who sat near the stove may have felt too warm. The children who sat farthest away may have felt cold. The stove burned fuel such as wood or coal.

The children studied arithmetic, or math; geography: science; history; reading art;and penmanship, or neat writing. Teachers wrote lessons on a blackboard at the front of the room. Students did math problems or practiced writing on the blackboard. In some schools, students had their own small blackboards, called slates, to write on One teacher had to teach all grade levels, so teachers often taught the children one at a time.

The teacher expected the children to behave well and punished those who did not. The teacher may have used a leather strap, a wooden cane, or a wooden paddle for this task. Sometimes a child who had behaved badly would have to cut a switch from a tree. The teacher would then hit the child with the switch as punishment. Recess was at noon. The children played and ate lunch. Students often carried their lunches to school in metal pails. In very cold weather, the teacher sometimes cooked hot food on the stove. Lessons resumed in the afternoon. When school ended for the day, the children went home. They rarely had homework. Their parents required them to help with chores in the house or on the farm. Only a few children owned books. When students had to carry books to and from school. they tied the books together with a

leather strap and held on to the loose end of the strap.

I am a little girl from an ordinary family who is thought to be good or well-behaved but actually I am kind of naughty . I love winter especially when it snows ,As you can see, cold snowflakes fall down casually and naughtily like me. They fall on branches of trees, on roofs of houses and on wheat fields. Soon the whole earth will be dressed in white. Everything is shining in the sun, which just give me warmth and hope during my childhood. This year’s first snow of winter fin ally came as usual -an exciting day for every child including me but not for most teachers since the days are too hard for children in the kindergarten to dress themselves . Up until now,I had been old enough to dress myself, but today I also need some help. Miss Dainty, my kindergarten teacher who is beautiful and nice enough to me had been through first snow days many times, but I think she may still remember this one with my unforgettable boots and my missing mittens(连指手套)?”

I managed to get into my wool snow trousers. But I had trouble in wearing my jacket because it didn't fit well. It was a hand-me-down from my brother, and it made me wonder why I had to wear his ugly clothes, At least my hat and scarf were mine, and they were quite pretty. Finally it was time to have Miss Finlayson help me with my boots (靴子).

In her calm, motherly voice she said, "By the end of winter, you will all be able to put on your own boots."I didn't realize at the at the time that this was more a

sentence of hope than of confidence (信心).

I handed her my boots and stuck out my foot. Like most children, I expected grown-ups to do all the work. After much pushing, she managed to get first one into place and then, with a sigh, worked the second one on too.

第三节:读后续写参考答案(满分25分)

Just then I announced ,” They are on my wrong feet!”My kindergarten teacher struggled to get the boots off and went through the ,joyless task of putting them on again.“They belong to my brother, you know,” I said. “I hate them!” From long years of practice, she seemed to act as I wasn’t an annoying little girl, She pushed and pushed, less gently this time. With a greater sigh, seeing the end of her struggle with me, she then asked, “Now, where are your mittens?”(90)

On hearing the question, I looked into her eyes and said,“The mittens are pretty ! I didn’t want to lose them , so I hid them in the toes of my boots.”At this, my teacher slowly stood up and turned her eyes to the window instead of uttering a sigh. Outside, The cold snowflakes was falling heavily on the branches of trees. Looking at her back, I seemed to realize something . When I was about to try my efforts with the boots, my kind teacher helped me for the fourth time ,I knew she managed to help a naughty girl successfully this time.(98)

Nowadays the problem of the generation gap is becoming more and more serious. Poor relationship between parents and their children are very common. Whether we like it or not, our parents are responsible for us at least until we're out of high school. So rather than get upset about that fact, maybe we should focus on some ways to make our relationship better. The best way, in my opinion, is to learn to really communicate with my parents. When I find myself arguing with my mom and dad, I try to stop. If I can manage to stop myself from talking, I usually find that I can calm down quickly. I guess I'm usually acting out of emotion rather than logic(逻辑). But if I can stop arguing for a minute, it seems that my opinion changes and I start to realize that I'm a bit childish. Emotionally I may still be upset, but logically I understand that yelling(大 叫大嚷) and fighting surely won't make things better. Once I've stopped arguing, I look at my parents in the eye. You'd be amazed at how much easier it is to communicate with your parents when you've actually looking at them. Looking away doesn't do much of anything except for giving them the impression that I'm not listening or that I don't care. It's much easier to see things eye to eye when you're physically seeing them eye to eye. Finally, I listen to what they're saying (or at least I try). Communication can't happen unless both sides hear and listen to each other. There is nothing wrong with my hearing, but that doesn't mean I always listen to the sounds that people are making. When I argue with my parents, I can physically hear what they're saying without mentally listening to it. Whether I admit it or not, my parents' experience can actually help them give me

They appreciated the tricky point that any major change can be stressful. Bad events like "serious illness of a family member" were high on the list, but so were some helpful life-changing events like marriage. When you take the Holmes-Rahe test you must remember that the score does not show how you deal with stress - it only shows how much you have to deal with. And we now know that the way you deal with these events dramatically (戏剧性的) affects your chances of staying healthy. By the early 1970s, hundreds of similar studies had followed Holmes and Rahe. And millions of Americans who work and live under stress worried over the reports. Somehow the research got boiled down to a memorable message. Women's magazines ran titles like "Stress causes illness". If you want to stay physically and mentally healthy the articles said avoid stressful events. But such simplistic advice is impossible to follow. Even if stressful events are dangerous , many — like the death of a loved one — are impossible to avoid. Moreover, any warning to avoid all stressful events is a prescription (处方) for staying away from chances as well as trouble. Since any change can be stressful, a person who wanted to be completely free of stress would never marry, have a child, take a new job or move. The idea that all stress makes you sick also takes no notice of a lot of what we know about people. It supposes we' re all vulnerable and not active in the face of the difficult situation. But what about human ability and creativity? Many come through periods of stress with more physical and mental strength than they had before. We also know that a long time without change or challenge can lead to boredom and physical and mental pressure. 1. The result of Holmes-Rahe’s medical research tells us _________________. A. the way you deal with major events may cause stress B. what should be done to avoid stress C. what kind of event would cause stress D. how to deal with sudden changes in life 2. The studies on stress in the early 1970s led to ___________________. A. popular avoidance of stressful jobs B. great fear over the mental disorder
