Body Language

Body language is an important form of communication that is used everywhere, although we don’t often think about it. Some messages are understood by people around the world simply because they are not communicated by words. For example, in many countries, people nod their heads to show agreement and they put their fingers up to their mouths to ask for silence.

However, body language is used differently in different cultures, For example, in some western cultures, people shrug their shoulders to show they don’t understand or they don’t care about something. This isn’t common in other places. In Asian countries, such as Japan, people bow to show respect when they greet each other or say goodbye. This isn’t done in the West.

Sometimes, people think they know about the body language customs of certain cultures. but in fact, they don't know enough. Take bowing as an example. Many travellers aren't sure how to bow or when to bow while in Japan. Kissing is another example that we need to learn about. In many European cultures, women and children are kissed on each cheek by family members or friends when they meet in the street. New friends are often greeted with a kiss on the cheek by Europeans at parties. Two men usually shake hands and put

their free hand on each other’s shoulders. In the Middle East, you must be careful about your feet. It is very rude to show the bottom of your shoe when you rest one leg on top of the other. It is also not polite to touch people with your shoes.

So, as we can see, body language is just as important as the spoken language when we communicate with people from other cultures.

Chinese and English

Chinese and English are very different languages. Each language developed along a different path and has a very different system of writing and pronunciation. However despite their huge differences, both languages are spoken by more people in the world than any other language.

Chinese began to develop around 1000 BC. It has gone through many forms and has many different dialects (方言), Mandarin (普通话)is now the most widely used form of Chinese English began to develop in Britain around the year 100 AD. Local languages, old German, Latin and other European languages mixed and become a new language. This is why, even today, many words in English sound familiar to people who speak other European languages.

Chinese writing uses a system of strokes (笔画) to make characters, which represent a sound, a word or an idea. Learning to read Chinese takes great memorization skills and learning to read write it takes many hours of repeated practice. Words must be together with their symbol, meaning and pronunciation English, on the other hand, uses an Alphabet(字母), Each letter and some letter combinations(组合) have a different sound. Letters are put together to make a word with a particular pronunciation. Once you learn the basic patterns, you can say most new words you see.

Tone(语调) is used very differently in Chinese and English. Chinese has four tones, which usually convey(表达) the actual meaning of a word. In English, tone of voice creates emphasis(强调), follows a pattern or conveys the emotions(情感) or attitude(态度) of the speaker.

Fishing with birds

Wang Damin is a fisherman. Although he is over 65, he is very fit and still enjoys working.

Damin uses cormorants to catch fish. Cormorants are large black birds. They are good at catching fish because they can swim well. They can dive down and stay under the water for up to two minutes.

Damin usually sets off in the late afternoon and gets the cormorants ready for Work. First, he ties a piece of grass around their necks to stop them from eating big fish. Then when Damin’s boat reac hes the right place in the river, he pushes them into the river, Damin uses several ways to attract fish. During the day, he jumps up and down on his boat. After dark, he hangs a light on a post at the front of the boat. The cormorants bring the fish back to the boat. The fish are then taken and thrown into a big basket by Damin. No nets are required for this type of fishing.

Cormorant fishing was once practiced in lots of places in South-east China, and there were many fishermen in the area. But today, few young people are interested in it. In 50 years, perhaps there will be no more cormorant fishermen in the world.

Shadow puppet plays

Every Saturday, Wang Weifang puts on a play with his friends in a small town near Xi'an. The audience can hear them, but they cannot see them. That is because they are putting on a shadow puppet play.

Shadow puppets are made of hard leather. The leather is cut out in the shape of a person, an animal or an object. Each puppet is painted in bright colours and put on a stick. Some puppets have movable arms and legs.

During a shadow puppet play, Wang stands behind a white screen with lights behind it. The audience sit in front of the screen. Wang and his friends hold the puppets very close to the screen so the audience can see the puppets' shadows clearly Then they move the puppets around and do the voices of the different characters.

Shadow puppet plays are an ancient Chinese art. Now with TV and

films, shadow puppet plays are not as popular as before.

Wang and his friends often work very hard for little money, but they do not mind. They want to keep this traditional art form alive.

English Around the World(1)

There are more than 3 000 languages spoken in the world. Of all these languages, English is the most widely used. Recent surveys show that more than 500 million people speak English as their mother tongue.

From its roots in England, the language was spread around the world by English traders and English governments in new lands. One of these new lands became the United States of America. The population of the United States is 309 million, making it the country with the largest number of native English speakers.

About 300 million people speak English as their second language. There are even more people, like some in Europe as well as in China and Japan, who study English as a foreign language.

English has become the base language for international business, for the wor ld’s airlines and even for the Internet. Whatever language people speak, they need to know some English if they work in these fields. It is clear that the English language is becoming more important.

English Around the World (II)

English has become widely used around the world. Why has this happened? We may find the answer from history.

In the nineteenth century, Great Britain became powerful country, so English became an international language. Then, since the 1950s, the USA has become more and more powerful. The American computer and Internet industry have taken the leading position in the world. As a result,

the Internet has helped English to become much more popular.

China, a country with the largest population in the world, has encouraged more people to learn English since the 1970s. Since the 1990s, English leaning has been very popular with Chinese people. Many of them have done well in English and have made great progress in speaking it.

Now, students are required to learn English, and the study of English is regarded as a very important industry in China as well as in the rest of the world.

A Class of the World

Ms. Morin teaches English in Edmonton. The students in her class come from all over the world. Last week, she asked her students to prepare presentations about their home countries. Today is the time to" show and tell”.

Marianna: Today I want to tell you about my home country Brazil. It's the largest country in South America. It has a huge river called the Amazon and a rainforest with more trees than you can imagine. My people are known for our fun dances and colourful culture.

Akia: Ten years ago, my family came to Canada. We came from Turkey. Do you know that Turkey is in both Europe and Asia? There is a famous bridge called the Bosphorous Bridge. It connects Europe and Asia. Turkey is modern and old, rich and poor. Everything comes together to make it a great place to discover.

Ahmed: I was born in Egypt. Many tourists know about the pyramids, but there are other interesting things to see and do in Egypt. You can relax on a boat tour of the Nile. You can ride a camel in the Sahara Desert or walk in the ancient markets in Cairo. Many things in Egypt will surprise you, not just the pyramids.

Liu Yang: I’m from China, My country has a long history and rich culture. It has the largest population in the world. It has developed quickly in recent years. The Great Wall and the Terra Cotta Warriors are famous all around the world.

More students come to the front to talk about their countries with pride. All of them are proud of their home countries.

North America

North America is a large continent, but it has only three main countries. Canada is the farthest north. To the south of Canada is the United States. The U. S is north of Mexico. Together, these three countries cover about 24 million square kilometers.

About 550 million people live in North America. That is a large population, but smaller than that of China. The Great Lakes are the largest bodies of fresh water in the world. The Rocky Mountains are the biggest mountains in North America.

Canada is the biggest of the three countries in area, but it has the smallest population about 35 million. People speak many languages in Canada. Most speak English or French, but the third most common language is Chinese!

The U. S is also a very large country, and its population is much larger than any other country in North America. It has a population of more than 315 million. The U. S is often called America. People in the U.S. are called Americans. Most Americans speak English, and many speak Spanish. Of course, there are a lot of Chinese speakers in the U.S., too -more than 2 million!

Mexico is smaller than both Canada and the U.S. Most of the people there speak Spanish. It has a population of more than 110 million. Mexican people love their country, but many leave to live and work in the U.S. The capital city of Mexico is Mexico City. It is a very big city.

Great inventions

The Internet has been around for many years, but it was the invention of the World Wide Web that made it really useful to people. Together, the Internet and the World Wide Web have changed the world.

The Internet was invented by the US government in the 1960s, for the army to use. In the 1970s, scientists and businesspeople also wanted to use the Internet to send and receive messages. For some years, people could only send very simple texts. They could not send photos or documents by the Internet.

That changed in 1991 when a British scientist named Tim Berners-lee invented the World Wide Web. The World Wide Web allows people to send various types of files, such as texts, photos and videos by the Internet, so more and more people started to use it in the 1990s.

Today, the Web has hundreds of millions of users. It has changed the way people live, work and play. Through the Internet, email allows us to communicate nearly instantly with people thousands of miles away. People and businesses use e-commerce and online shopping to buy and sell things across the world. The Web also makes people's lives easier because now many things can be done from home, twenty-four hours a day. The Web can help you do research for your homework. so that you do not need to go to the library. You can use Internet banking instead of going to the bank. And, of course people just "surf the Web" when they want to relax.

Technology changes quickly, and it is hard to imagine what the future of the Internet and the Web will be. But it seems impossible to imagine life without them.

Liu Xiang -trained to be the best in the world

For Liu Xiang, life as a sports hero began in 2004. First, he was invited to competitions around the world. Then he was chosen for the Chinese learn at the Athens Olympic Games and won a gold medal.

Liu Xiang was not a successful sportsman at first. He was born in Shanghai on 13th July 1983, and started training when he was very young. In Grade 4, he went Io the Sports School of Putuo District of Shanghai. Liu was encouraged at first to train for the high jump.

In 1998, Liu Xiang’s ability in hurdling was noticed by Sun Haiping, who later became his coach. In 2001. a special programme was set up to help young sportsmen and sportswomen. Liu Xiang was among them. His races were recorded, and he was compared with the world's best sports stars. Sun Haiping used the information to change his training methods for Liu Xiang.

In May 2001, Liu Xiang won his first international 110m hurdles race in Japan. In 2004, he won the first Olympic gold medal for China in the 110m hurdles race, and at the same time broke the Olympic Games record . It was also the first time an Olympic gold medal for hurdling was hung round the neck of a sportsperson from an Asian country.

Liu Xiang trained very hard. In fact, he Trained so hard that he hurt his foot. From 2008 on. he suffered a lot from his foot problem, but he did not give up. Though he missed some competitions, he still returned to first place in the world 110m hurdles race in 2012.

It is a pity that his foot problem stopped him from completing the 2012 London Olympic Games. But he is still a symbol of courage and success, and we continue to take great pride in him.

The Importance of Computers

Since computers were invented in the USA in the 1950s, they have become very important in many areas of work and leisure. There is no doubt that computers are very useful in technology and business. In space, computers have been used to control the speed and direction of a spaceship. With the help of computers, doctors can find diseases easily and solve other problems. For example, tiny computers which are inside patients’ b odies can keep their hearts beating normally. In factories, robots are controlled by computers that are like human brains. They can do work that is dangerous to humans. In business, computers are used to place and cancel orders. They are also making the workplace safer and better.

Since the Internet came into being . peoples lives at home have been changed too. More and more people have personal computers that are used to play games and watch movies. Thanks to the Internet, people can do shopping and do business at home. Instead of writing letters on paper, people communicate by sending e-mails and chatting online. The whole world is connected. The Internet is making the world smaller, like a village.

Computers have improved our lives, but they have brought problems, too.For instance, if we work on computers too long, we may get headaches or sore eyes. If we play computer games too much, we won’t have enough time to study or exercise. Besides, not everything we read on the Internet is true or good for us. Computers help us at work and at home, but they must be used properly.

1.Tom Sawyer first appeared in Mark Twain's book T he

Adventures of Tom Sawyer. He also appears in three other books by Twain. Tom

is an orphan. His curiosity and friendship with a boy named Huckleberry Finn often get him into trouble with his serious Aunt Polly.

The book includes dialogues that show how language was spoken at the time. At th e time it was published, people weren’t used to this and it upset some people. However, it has remained a popular and important book since it was first published in 1876

2.The silly creatures in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland were created by Lewis Carroll In the 1865 book, a young girl named Alice falls down a rabbit hole and drops into a strange land. As she travels through the land, she meets many characters, solves puzzles and tries to avoid the awful Queen of Hearts.

Carroll was very bright and he had a degree in maths from Oxford. When he wrote the book. He also added maths puzzles to the story. As they were so well hidden, many readers today still enjoy trying to find and solve these puzzles.

3.Lord of the Flies was written by William Golding .The book is about a group of young boys. They are forced to stay on an island together after their plane has an accident. As they wait for help, they try to live off the land and build a small society. However, the boys don't get along and have trouble keeping the peace.

The book was published in 1954. Although it was not a great success at first, it became popular later. By the early 1960s. it was taught in many schools in Britain, Two films have also been made of the story.

A book review of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

One of my favourite great books is The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, by Mark Twain. The story is set in the town of St Petersburg, Missouri, in the US, in the nineteenth century. It tells some exciting stories about a

boy who has many .adventures

Tom, the hero of the book lives with his aunt Polly. He is a lively and clever boy. He does not like people telling him what to do, so he always gets into trouble. He and his best friend, Huck Finn, run away to an island in the middle of the Mississippi River. Tom has more trouble because a bad man named Injun Joe is looking for him. Later, Tom escapes from a cave with

another friend, Becky. He also finds Injun Joes treasure box and Lakes it away.

My favourite part of the book is when Tom and Huck start their adventures on the island in the Mississippi River. At first, they are happy. But when they hear that everyone thinks they are dead, they feel very sorry, so they come back home. They hide and watch for a lime when they see their family and neighbours coming to their funeral in the church. Then,Tom and Huck suddenly appear. Everyone is surprised to see them at first, but very pleased to find that they are alive.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is a great book. lt is more than an adventure story. Mark Twain wrote it in 1876. It describes peoples lives in the southern states of America at that time. It tells how young people grow, how people love each other and how bad people pay for their actions. It is written in everyday English, and the dialogues sound especially real .Today, it is still read and loved by people all over the world. and it is thought to be one of the greatest American stories.

A famous inventor

Leonardo da Vinci was born on April 1 5th, 1452 in a northern Italian town. He is considered one of the greatest painters of all time. He is still famous today because of the Mona Lisa and other well-known paintings. However, not many people know he was also an engineer and an inventor

Da Vinci was interested in science and art, and he was a pioneer in many areas. He drew plans and pictures and wrote about his many ideas in his diaries. Since he died on May 2nd, 1519, people have been learning from them. They included plans for an adding machine, bridges as well as drawings of musical instruments, flying machines and machines for war, such as guns.

Since any of da Vincis inventions were far ahead of their time, they were only tested hundreds of years later. Becau se he couldn’t test them, not all of da Vincis plans worked out as well as he wished. However, some of his ideas worked well .For example, one of his bridges was finally built 500 years after it was drawn and flying machines, such as helicopters, are very common now.

Some think da Vinci wanted to keep his ideas secret as he wrote his diary in code. Others think it was just easier for him to write this way because he was left-handed. Either way, da Vinci's diaries can only be read with a mirror because everything is written backwards As it took some time to translate the diaries, they were published more than 150 years after his death.

(2分) _________________________________________________________________ 4. 第(4)自然段中“每读起这段文字,我就泪眼模糊,深为它们的行为所感动”这句话与前文“_____________________________________ ”这一句相照应。 (2分+2分) 第(5)自然段中,作者为什么说蚂蚁“抱成团”是一种“智慧”?(运用你已有的知识,结合短文内容回答) 答:_________________________________________________________________ 蚂蚁家庭“抱成团”逃离火海,避免全军覆没的行为体现了____________和_____________这样两种精神、。 回答问题:“我”为什么要敬重卑微?(用短文中的原句回答)(2分) _______________________________________________________________ 6. (2分) _____________________________________________________________________ (二)走进书里去 ①有人说现代的儿童普遍有个共同倾向,就是把大部分时间花费在看电视和看漫画书上,而不喜欢阅读文字比较多的书籍。
