With the support of her parents, Junelle walks along the streets with an orange bag. Her mother follows her by car, so Junelle can empty her bag when it becomes heavy. Isabella always accompanies(陪伴) her daughter.

Working an hour a night three times per week, she has collected more than 400 pounds of canned and boxed food. This is n’t the first year she has collected food. There are many American expressions about insects--- like bees, for example. Bees are known as very hard workers. They appear to be busy, moving around their homes, or hives (蜂窝). So you might say you were as busy as a bee if you spent your weekend cleaning your house. In fact, you might say your house was a beehive of activity if your whole family was helping you clean. You also might say you made a beeline for something if you went there right away. When we go to see a movie, my friend always makes a beeline for the place where they sell popcorn (爆米花) .

Here is an expression about bees that is not used much any more, but we like it anyway.

We think it was first used in the 1920s. If something was the best of its kind, you might say it was the bee’s knees. Now, we admit that we do not know how this expression developed. In fact, we do not even know if bees have knees!

If your friend cannot stop talking about something because she thinks it is important, you might say she has a bee in her bonnet (女帽). If someone asks you a personal question, you might say “that is none of your beeswax”. This means none of your business.

Speaking of personal questions, there is an expression when their children ask, “Where do babies come from?” Parents who discuss sex and reproduction (生殖) say this is talking about the birds and bees.

Butterflies are beautiful insects, but you would not want to have butterflies in your stomach. That means to be nervous about having to do something, like speaking in front of a crowd. You would also not want to have ants in your trousers. That is, to be unable to sit still.

60. If you make a beeline for something, you ______ .

A. are as busy as a bee

B. go quickly and directly towards it

C. always go to the same place

D. buy something at a certain place

61. The underlined expression “ it is the bee’s knees” _______ .

A. is not used at all now

B. was first used in the 1820s

C. reminds us that bees have knees

D. means “it is very good”

62. If you ask your American friend Jack “How old is your wife?” he may say “______.”

A. It is none of your beeswax

B. You have a bee in your bonnet

C. It is the bee’s knees

D. You are talking about the birds and bees

63. When you have butterflies in your stomach, you ______ .

A. are too sick to sit still

B. have ants in your trousers

C. are nervous about something

D. have a stomachache

64. The passage mainly tells us _______.

A. some interesting and useful insects

B. some expressions about insects

C. the way of learning expressions

D. some newly-invented expressions

第二节简答题(共3小题;每小题1.5分,满分4.5分)

Tsunamis (海啸) are a series of huge waves created by an underground movement such as an earthquake or a volcanic eruption (火山喷发) . A tsunami can travel hundreds of miles per hour in the open ocean and hit the land with huge waves.

From the area where the tsunamis come, waves travel in all directions. Once the waves approach the coast, they will become more than 100 feet in height. The topography (地形) of the coastline and the ocean floor will influence the size of the wave. There may be more than one wave and the latter one may be larger than the one before. That is why a small tsunami at one beach can be a huge wave a few miles away.

All tsunamis are dangerous, even if they may not damage every coastline they strike. A tsunami can strike anywhere along most of the US coastline. Many harmful tsunamis have occurred along the coasts of California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska and Hawaii.

A movement of the ocean floor, caused by earthquakes, most often causes tsunamis. If a

tsunami occurs close to a coast, the first wave could reach the beach in a few minutes, even before a warning is given. Areas are at greater risk if they are less than 25 feet above sea level and within a mile of the coastline. Drowning is the most common cause of death during a tsunami. Tsunami waves are very harmful to buildings. Other dangers include floods, pollution of drinking water, and fires from gas lines.

An accurate prediction (预报) system will allow authorities (官方) to issue timely warnings and save lives in the event of a shore-bound tsunami. But forecasting tsunamis accurately is very difficult because the ocean is usually calm before they strike land.

65. What can cause tsunamis according to the passage? ( 回答词数不超过6个)

66. What harm can a tsunami bring besides killing people and damaging buildings? ( 回答词数不超过15个)

67. Why is it very difficult to forecast tsunami accurately ? ( 回答词数不超过9个)

选修6 Unit 1 Art-Reading A SHORT HISTORY OF WESTERN PAINTING Art is influenced by the customs and faith of a people. Styles in Western art have changed many times. As there are so many different styles of Western art, it would be impossible to describe all of them in such a short text. Consequently, this text will describe only the most important ones, starting from the sixth century AD. The Middle Ages (5th to the 15th century AD) During the Middle Ages, the main aim of painters was to represent religious themes. A conventional artist of this period was not interested in showing nature and people as they really were. A typical picture at this time was full of religious symbols, which created feeling of respect and love for God. But it was evident that ideas were changing in the 13th century when painters like Giotto di Bondone began to paint religious scenes in a more realistic way. The Renaissance (15th to 16th century) During the Renaissance, new ideas and values graduallv replaced those held in the Middle Ages.People began to concentrate less on religious themes and adopt a more humanistic attitude to life. At the same time painters returned to classical Roman and Greek ideas about art. They tried to paint people and nature as they really were. Rich people wanted to possess t heir own paintings, so they could decorate their superb palaces and great houses. They paid famous artists to paint pictures of themselves, their houses and possessions as well as their activities and achievements. One of the most important discoveries during this period was how to draw things in perspective. This technique was first used by Masaccio in 1428. When people first saw his paintings, they were convinced that they were looking through a hole in a wall at a real scene. If the roles of perspective had not been discovered, no one would have been able to paint such realistic pictures. By coincidence, oil paints were also developed at this time, which made the colours used in paintings look richer and deeper. Without the new paints and the new technique, we would not be able to see the many great masterpieces for which this period is famous. Impressionism (late 19th to early 20th century) In the late 19th century, Europe changed a great deal. from a mostly agricultural society to a mostly industrial one. Many people moved from the countryside to the new cities. There were many new inventions and social changes. Naturally, these changes also led to new painting styles. Among the painters who broke away from the traditional style of painting were the Impressionists, who lived and worked in Paris.

S6 unit1—unit2 阅读: a People are more likely to wash their hands properly after using the toilet if they are shamed into it or think they are being watched, scientists said on Thursday. Hand-washing is the cheapest way of controlling disease but less than one third of men and two thirds of women wash their hands with soap after going to the toilet, a British study by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine showed. But when prompted by an electronic message flashing up on a board asking: "Is the person next to you washing with soap?," around 12 percent more men and 11 percent more women used soap. Health authorities around the world are stepping up efforts to persuade people t o be more hygienic and wash their hands properly to help slow the spread of H1N1 swine flu, which was declared a pandemic(大流行病) by the World Health Organization in June. "Hand-washing with soap has been ranked the most effective way for the worldwide control of disease," the study's authors wrote. "It could save more than a million lives a year from diarrhoeal diseases, and prevent respiratory(呼吸) infections -- the biggest causes of child mortality(死亡)in developing countries." Nelle Harper Lee was born on April 28, 1926, in Monroeville, Alabama. As a child, Harper Lee was a tomboy (假小子). She fought on the playground. She talked back to teachers, and she was bored with school. In high school Lee was lucky enough to have a gifted English teacher, Gladys Watson Burkett, who made her fall in love with literature and taught her h ow to write well. There Lee loved nineteenth-century British authors best, and once said that her dream was to become “the Jane Austen of South Alabama”.After leaving high school, she went to the University of Alabama. There she found a second home on the campus newspaper. Eventually she became editor-in-chief of the Rammer Jammer, a quarterly humor magazine on campus. She entered the law school, but she loathed it. Despite her father's hope that she would become a local attorney (律师) like her sister Alice, Lee went to New York for her writing. She spent eight years working small jobs before she finally showed a manuscript (手稿) to Tay Hohoff, an editor at J.B. Lippincott. At this point, it was more like a string of stories than the novel that Lee wanted to write. Under Hohoff's guidance, two and a half years of rewriting followed. Finally the novel was ready for publication. To Kill a Mockingbird was published in 1960 to highly favorable reviews and quickly climbed the bestseller lists, where it remained for eighty-eight weeks. In 1961, the novel won the Pulitzer Prize. To Kill a Mockingbird has sold more than thirty million copies in eighteen languages. In 2011, President Obama awarded Nelle Harper Lee the National Medal of Arts. 4.When Nelle Harper Lee was a little girl, she ________.
